Gordon, a sweet dog from Celebration, FL, had been missing for over a month. His owner, Ana, was devastated when he was missing, fearing she might never see him again. But just when hope seemed lost, something incredible happened.

Gordon was found wandering as a stray and brought to Sumter County Animal Services. Upon his arrival, he seemed downhearted, missing the love and comfort of his home. The staff quickly ran a scan on his microchip and, to their joy, discovered Ana’s contact information. Without delay, they reached out, and Ana couldn’t believe the news, her beloved dog had been found.

When Ana arrived at the shelter, the scene was one of pure joy. Gordon, who had been so quiet and withdrawn, lit up the moment he saw her. His tail wagged furiously, and he jumped with excitement inside his kennel, his sadness disappearing in an instant. Tears of happiness flowed as the two were finally reunited.

This incredible transformation, from a dog who had lost hope to one bursting with joy, touched everyone who witnessed it. It’s a beautiful reminder of the strong bond between pets and their owners, and the amazing work that microchipping and Sumter County Animal Services do to bring families back together.

🐾 Hurricane Preparedness Month: Keep Your Pets Safe 🐾

During a disaster, like a hurricane, chaos can strike quickly, leaving families to make difficult decisions about their beloved pets. Amid rushed evacuations and strong winds, having a plan in place can be the difference between safety and uncertainty for your pets.

While these situations may not always be preventable, being prepared gives your pets the best chance of staying safe during and after a hurricane. Start by creating an emergency kit tailored specifically to your pet’s needs and keep it accessible.

Top 10 Items for Your Pet's Emergency Kit:
1. Food: At least a three-day supply in an airtight, waterproof container.
2. Water: At least three days of water specifically for your pets.
3. Medicines and Medical Records: Many shelters and boarding facilities require up-to-date medical records.
4. Important Documents: Keep registration info, adoption papers, and vaccination records handy. Consider microchipping your pet and enrolling them in a recovery database.
5. First Aid Kit: Include bandages, ointments, flea and tick prevention, and a pet first aid reference book.
6. Collar/ID Tags and Leash: Ensure your pet has a collar or harness with ID and rabies tags. Also make sure your pet is microchipped and all of the contact information is kept up-to-date.
7. Crate or Carrier: A sturdy, safe crate large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down.
8. Sanitation: Pet litter, litter box, newspapers, paper towels, trash bags, and bleach.
9. A Picture of You and Your Pet: If you get separated, a photo can help document ownership and aid in reuniting.
10. Familiar Items: Treats, toys, and bedding can help reduce your pet’s stress during an emergency.
Being prepared means you’re ready to protect every member of your family, including your pets. Let’s make sure our furry friends are safe this hurricane season!

Behind the Badge: Training Our Animal Control Officers

From left to right: Felix Soto Merced, Amber Capps, Sierra Hollinger, and Rebecca Hamilton have all completed their Animal Control Officer (ACO) classwork. A special congratulation to Sierra Hollinger, who has received her badge and completed all the required training!

Becoming an ACO requires rigorous training to ensure officers can handle any situation with professionalism and care. Our recruits start with a 40-hour state course covering essential topics like animal handling and legal procedures, culminating in a state exam that certifies them as ACOs.

After passing the exam, recruits enter a 3-month field training program divided into four phases. During this period, they work closely with experienced officers, gaining hands-on experience in real-world scenarios. Whether they’re just beginning or already deep into their training, these recruits are dedicated to serving and protecting our community’s animals.

Importantly, all training costs are fully covered by the county, reflecting our commitment to maintaining high standards in animal care and public safety. This comprehensive approach ensures our ACOs are well-prepared to meet the demands of the job and make a positive impact on our community.

Let’s give a shout-out to all of our hardworking ACOs for their commitment to animal welfare!

If you would like to join our team and make a difference in our community, we’d love to hear from you! All ACO positions are currently filled but we have other job opportunities to choose from. Checkout the open positions here. www.sumtercountyfl.gov/employment

Six dogs were either adopted or fostered to be adopted at the Annual Clear the Shelters event, which was held Aug. 24 at the Wildwood Community Center. One of the best stories is that long-time resident Fisher, who had been at Sumter County Animal Services for over one year, was fostered to be adopted. Fisher currently has heartworms and needs treatment. Once he is cleared, he can be officially adopted. Jonathan, Danny and Adam adopted Rainbow, one of the younger dogs at Animal Services.

There are plenty more dogs and cats looking for their furever home. The Clear the Shelters event continues to Sept. 10, but every day is a good day to give a pet a good home!
