Many worried pet owners are contacting Healthy Paws about the mysterious canine respiratory illness that is being covered in the news. At this time, much is still unknown about this illness; there is a lot of guessing and not a lot of data.

❗CANINE INFLUENZA UPDATE❗
We received notice late last week that there are confirmed cases of H3N2 Influenza in our area. We sent an email to patients who have received the Bordatella vaccine in the last year with recommendations. If you did not receive it - or if your pet is any communal dog situations - please read on...
With these confirmed cases, we would recommend that any pets who will be in a communal dog situation (i.e. boarding, doggie daycare) be vaccinated for Influenza along with Bordetella/Parainfluenza. The Influenza vaccination is given as an initial dose, boostered three weeks later, and immunity would be considered adequate approximately one week after this booster vaccination. This vaccine can be scheduled with a technician if a pet has been examined within the last year.
There are many infectious agents (bacteria, viruses) that cause the upper respiratory infection we commonly call "Kennel Cough." Similar to human flu or colds, our goal is to limit severity of illness caused by the infectious agents that are known.

With the holidays upon us, here are some handy tips to keep your pet safe:
*Pets + Christmas trees = potential disaster. While there are a few moments better than cozying up to the Christmas tree with your furry family member, the decorations can cause serious problems if your pet ingests them. Double-check that decorations are out of their reach.
*If you own a cat, toss the tinsel. This is sparkly decoration may as well be your cat’s new-found obsession. What looks like a shiny toy to your cat can prove deadly if ingested.
*Keep the food off the floor. Some foods that easily find their way to the floor are also poisonous to pets (grapes, chocolate/cocoa powder, onions, raisins, etc.).
*No yeast. Any dough made with yeast can cause dangerous bloating for pets.
*No xylitol. This ingredient is used in common sugar-free baked goods and gum and is poisonous to pets.
*Quick action can save a pet's life. If you think your pet has ingested anything harmful, call Healthy Paws right away, 815-322-5400. If it's after-hours or for additional guidance, please call Poison Control:
