Summer Paw Safety: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement has cooled down. You can also try the "seven-second test" to see if the pavement is too hot. Hold your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it is too hot to hold it there for the full seven seconds, then it is too hot for your dog to walk on.

Signs of burned pads:

Limping or refusing to walk
Licking or chewing at the feet
Pads darker in color than normal
Missing part of pad
Blisters or redness

Sound familiar? Emotions aren’t much different than us hoomans so why would you try to force your dog to meet or worse play with another dog they might not want to…?

These types of interactions can not only cause stress but repeatedly putting your dog in this situation may cause reactivity that wasn’t necessarily there before.

Remember you are your dogs best advocate! Don’t be afraid to speak up. Just because the other dog is friendly doesn’t and your dog is too doesn’t mean your dog is completely comfortable or truly wants company at that moment.

Please remember we wear something to protect our feet our dogs don’t! Even a salve on their paws wears off so check often and if you can’t walk barefoot or handle with your hands they can’t with their paws!

Learning to properly read your dogs body language is such an important thing.

Over the years as a trainer I’ve always known reading body language was vital. But more recently it’s becoming increasingly more important with R+ training than it used say 30yrs ago. I’ve also noticed the differences between pet parents, novice professionals and those of us that have been around a bit longer (and are always still open to learning more!). We all see things differently, as is pointed out in this video.

Not just with dog body language but with all animals, the more you educate yourself and practice the easier it gets and the more nuances you can see. But also there’s the behavior and psychology side too. As well as differences with breeds.

So when it comes to getting better with reading different dogs body language… start by enjoying it, get with someone who’s more experienced than you (a professional trainer), observe other dogs in settings, observe your dog and most importantly don’t stress yourself doing it the first few dozen times!

Socializing your puppy is necessary and wonderful. How, when and even where you socialize her really does matter. I’ve heard quite often from dog parents that they are/did and don’t understand. Then I talk to them a little more and find out socializing were things like going to the dog park, oddly sized playdates for a first meeting, too many hands at once, etc.
We need to be our pups advocate and make sure they get properly socialized while making sure we’re not overwhelming them. It’s a delicate balance sometimes. If you’re ever unsure talk with a trainer.

It’s that wonderful time of year when we all want to get started planting things outside, starting plants inside, maybe sprucing up our home with some new plants after spring cleaning or even just getting started with a first plant and a first puppy…. Just like certain foods and dogs don’t always go well together that it works the same for your common household plants.

Be careful with what you choose if your dog nibbles or chews on plants. Either move it out of the way, don’t get it or possibly give it to a friend. If you’re someone who loves plants and must have them don’t worry there are plenty of pet friendly choices to choose from! If you don’t like what you see in this list please speak with your local nursery and they can further help you and your fur babies.
