This is the problem when both you and your husband are tall. Today I found a rouge sweet pea at the very bottom of the trellis. This thing is HUGE and this picture is not doing it justice. The peas inside look bigger than my thumbnail!

It is harvest season! Corn (only about a quarter pictured 😱) tomatoes, an onion, Brussels sprouts, sweet peas, celery, and of course, eggs. So much to share 🙏🏻 🌽🍅🥗 @ Whidbey Island Farmacy

Ahhhh! We had family in town over the last few weeks and our garden got away from us. Oddly enough, 90% of these “weeds” are volunteer tomatoes. 🍅 If they weren’t trying to choke out our beautiful corn, we would probably let them grow. Also on the list for 2018 is a greenhouse. Free windows are a great way to build your own greenhouse on the cheap. Now if we can only source some free 2x4s, we’d have the ultimate frugal nursery! 🌿🥦🍓🥕

Expansion is happening! 2018 goals include a bigger chicken run. Our run and coop is made out of pallets which are a great source for free wood. We get ours from the local nursery () and the local Farm Store. Does this mean I can get more chickens? 😍

Thanksgiving is about the only time of year I make a pie. I hate pumpkin (I know, I know...) so this year I’m making buttermilk pie! But a good pie starts with a good dough. That’s when I pull out the vodka. Anyone else use vodka and a food processor to make their dough?

Today is our chicken waterer. This is something we’ve always been passionate about, chicken ni***es! They make getting water to your chickens so much cleaner, and stress-free. We put ours into a PVC pipe that is feed from another 32-gallon trash can. We only have to fill the can once every couple weeks. This, along with our feeder, makes for some stress-free chicken raising. And that’s the kind of chicken momma I like to be!

I realized the other day I haven’t posted about our chicken feeder and waterer! So I’ll start with our feeder today. Just a simple 32 gallon trash can with 6 PVC elbows at the bottom. The chickens stick their heads in the elbows to eat, and they can’t scratch or use their head to pull any food out. So there is no waste! All we have to do it lift the lid, pour in the feed, and it can hold up to 150 lbs of food. Stress-free, waste-free, hands-off chicken feeding. Look for our waterer tomorrow 🙂

So what did we do with all that hay? First was make a mud-free run of course! We laid down burlap sacks (free of course!) first to help control the mud, and then laid hay down on top. Happy chickens, happy wife 🤔🙂🐓

What’s better than free hay? A huge bag of free hay! Thanks to the Freeland Country Store for their free hay sweepings ☺️ Our chickens are so excited for mostly mud-free run and the pigs for clean, fresh bedding 🐖 🐓

Bringing the chicks outside, we noticed one of the Leghorns was lethargic and getting run over. So I brought her in, and I gave her a chicken bath. She went from a sad brown chick to a sad white chick. Progress. I forced Greek yogurt and an electrolyte solution down her throat and she perked right up. Nose had to supervise me being a chicken vet, but I’m pretty sure she approved. Leghorn is still not 100%, but eating on her own and making chick noises again. I guess it wasn’t truly eviction day 😏

Well today was quite the eventful day. It started with eviction day for the chicks. Finally! We made them their own section of the run so they could meet the old chickens with some protection. The old chickens thought we brought them a moss buffet! They were in heaven. Chicks went down to their new home on the lawn mower express, and were so happy to be outside! I’m so happy not to have the stink anymore 😁

Today was Day One of canning! First picture: mashed pears 🍐 ready for pear butter. Second: Vanilla Spiced Pear butter on the right (from the pears in the first picture!), Maple Bourbon Apple butter on the left. Third: We use all parts of the fruit in this house! Boiling apple peels, cores, and bits to make Apple Peel Jelly 🍎🤤
Day Two will be all about the blackberry and Day Three will be peach and mango! 🍑

We've been busy with crazy chicken math lately! We've added two Bresse, two Cream Legbar, an Easter Egger, and a Welsummer to the flock for some added color to our egg selection. Blue, green, and dark speckled eggs to come 🥚🥚🥚 Still in my wish list is a Black Copper Maren for chocolate colored eggs, Oliver Egger for olive eggs, and a Salmon Faverolles for PINK eggs!
