Yes a great reminder!!

Yes a great reminder!!

“Instead of questioning your trainer why your kid is not excelling as quickly as others in their riding, maybe look at how much your kid practices. If you’re only willing to commit to two lessons a month for example, that’s 2 hours per every 30 days on average. 2 hours out of 720 hours a month. Now let’s look at a year. 24 hours total. On average your kid then practices 1 day out of 365 days per year... let that sink in.

Our sport is much harder than most and takes a lot of practice and skill, but for some reason people do not look at it this way.

For example when I ran track, we practiced minimum 5 days a week for 2 hours a day. I put the sweat and time in to improve. Chorus - practice daily. Cheerleading - daily. Football - daily.

Now, I also understand our sport is expensive. However, I find it imperative that as a parent you look at these numbers... and before you come complaining “my kid isn’t improving fast enough,” truly look at how much she practices. I am good at what I do, but I can’t work miracles.

I constantly get parents comparing their kid to student “X.” However, student X is out at the barn working for extra ride time on anything I will give them and always ready to put in the work. As trainers we always have horses that need to be hacked. “But I want to jump,” I hear so often and the biggest thing is that these riders don’t realize jumping starts with flat work. Come work in exchange for ride time. Drop your stirrups and practice what we do in our lessons. Make yourself stronger and watch how much quicker you excel. All jumping is is flat work with sticks in the way.

I was a barn rat growing up. I worked my butt off just to get on any horse my trainer would let me. The bratty pony needs a schooling? Done. The wild TB needs a hack? Done. The true and seasoned lesson horse needs a light hack! Perfect! I can work on me.

We need to truly change these mindsets in our industry. Let’s be honest with your expectations.

24 hours - 1 day - out of 365 days. Let that sink in.

Now let’s just add once a week lessons. 4 hours a month - 48 hours a year - 2 days out of 365.. “

Photo of Kennedy our working student who is an excellent example of this. She has worked extremely hard and ridden tons of different ponies in her year with us. The improvement in her riding & all she’s learned is remarkable. Can’t wait to see where this show season takes her.🌟

A barn lesson due to below freezing weather makes for the perfect opportunity to practice tacking and untacking -especially tying the cinch! Practice makes perfect and having my students be able to do it themselves and know why we do what we do is so important!

Shout out to Dime for being such a good team player and up for every shenanigan I throw her way 🙌🏻 these two sisters have been embracing winter lessons by always asking for a barn lesson if the weather isn’t suitable for riding and I love it!!!! 🐴

REMINDER!! Per the latest lesson policy update that was given out at the end of summer last year, I ask for a 30 day notice as a curtesy if you choose to quit lessons for any reason. This also includes “taking a break”. Although I LOVE giving lessons, I do not do this for charity work. This is my job. I have bills to pay and horses are dang expensive. So when you tell me the day of your lesson that that’s your last lesson and that you will be taking a break or quitting lessons, that leaves me in a very hard spot- because I know almost for sure am loosing a month of lesson income because although I have a waiting list, I probably won’t get that spot filled that day. I count on my lessons to commit to their times. Over the last 2 months I’ve had 4 people say they are going to take a break for warmer weather and 3 of the 4 were day of notice, not 30 day. Although yes, lessons in winter can be very hit or Miss, I still depend on adjusted lesson income. My horse expenses don’t just stop because lessons do. I don’t know why and will never understand why horse back riding lessons are so often viewed as a less than sport and none committal because they aren’t a team or school sport. When in reality, horses are probably one of the top sports that your child would have a chance to do for the rest of their lives, as opposed it being only a sport that they do at school…. Of course I may be a bit bias to that opinion but I’m honestly exhausted of hearing that as an excuse!!! So unfortunately I have to protect myself and my business. Going forward all lessons canceled except for weather incidents and lessons canceled by me personally will need paid for, even through the winter now. I will make sure to personally update all lessons during lesson times as well. And reminder that if the high is between 33 & 40° during winter we will then evaluate conditions further and look at “feels like temp”, wind, and sunshine. If the high is under 32° lessons will for sure be canceled unless we agree upon a barn lesson. If anyone has any questions please let me know. Spring schedule will be being made mid February so I will be reaching out soon to confirm lesson times!!!!! ☀️ THANK YOU
