We wanted to share a little video of our Staff’s new babies. Congratulations Jenny, Sue and Melanie!
Welcome Teddy, Bindi, and Feather to our MLVH family! Thank you for bringing such joy to our daily work day. We 💕 you all!!
I came across this video this morning and it broke my heart! Donatella was my Redfooted Tortiose that passed away in a home fire 2 1/2 years ago. The fire was caused by a malfunctioning heat lamp on her cage.
She had the sweetest spirit and happy go to my daughter’s school to teach her students about the environment and animals. The very first day we took Donatella to Katie’s class, she went to each child in the circle one by one. It was amazing to watch.
In memory of Donatella I would like to share
a few very important safety lessons I learned too late. If you own any pet that uses heat lamps or heaters please read.
Have a fire alarm system that goes directly to the fire department.(Saved my three dogs, ferrets and snakes). The alarm company was able to contact me immediately and talk to me about the animals we owned. I work 40 minutes from home, the fire department was able to be at my home in approximately 5 minutes!
Safety measures:
Use an outlet that is a GFI, it will shut off an electrical outlet if it is the cause of the fire( Donatella would still be with us😢). If you do not have a GFI outlet available they sell GFI converters that will plug directly into the socket and then your lamps be can plugged into the converter.
Buy lamps with a wire mesh covering the heat lamp and keep mesh covers on the cages. It will prevent the hot bulb from touching your pets and the bedding.
Let your fire department know how many pets you have in your home and always know your neighbors cell number. My dog hid under my bed, the house was so full of smoke the fire department could not find her. My neighbor was able to verify we owned three dogs.
Put a ring camera facing your tanks.
I had a vey special bond with Donatella, if I asked her for a kiss you she would reach her head out for her kiss. Saying that, please remember tortoises are a lot of work and can live up to 80 years. My tortoise was willed to my children and granddaughter with their approval.
On The Mend!!!
