Announcement: We are on an unknown time frame for intakes, unless absolutely emergent. Our President suffered from a CVA(STROKE) and she will be needing time to focus on health. Adoptions are still open but may happen slower than usual. We will still respond to questions as soon as we can. We are a small team caring for a zoo, remain kind and compassionate.

Thank you for understanding.

How can you help? Foster a bunny! We provide set up essentials and food, you'd only have to provide love, care and fresh food. Please reach out if this interests you. We could also use a bit more assistance barn cleaning.

We are deeply saddened to announce that our sweet Mocha peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge. In November she presented with severe head tilt, lethargy and total weakness. She was diagnosed with Ecuniculi. She put up one tough fight against the EC. We will honor her strength and courage, and admire her spunky personality. I will miss her daily messes she created and the way she would look at us with her one eye.

Please say a little prayer that her journey across the rainbow bridge is freeing. May she binky forever free, EC FREE, with unlimited nanners, the freshest vegetables, the cleanest of water and endless hay. You left a pawprint on my heart ❤️

We had a mama with 4 healthy babies arrive today! We got her nursery all set up! She will free roam when she isn't tending to her wittle babes. Friendly reminder that we DO NOT agree with setting rabbits free. What you may think is freedom is actually a death sentence as they've grown accustom to being cared for by us humans. It is OUR duty to ensure they're provided with essentials, love, protection and veterinary care!

June Bug enjoyed some much needed quality time outside the other day! The fluffle enjoyed a fresh salad outside soaking up the sun in the 55 degree weather with our President and Life enrichment coordinator. June enjoys being held, head pets, and kisses. She is always happiest when she is outside, and even happier in our arms. She will put her front paws on the cage to let you know she wants to be held, and then she will nuzzle right into you. Her age is unknown, but we do know she was used for breeding. Breeders your bunnies are filling our rescues, PLEASE STOP! We also stand firm that domestic rabbits are not food, a thorough interview will be conducted, all adoptions are on hold until AFTER Easter.

June came from a severe hoarding situation in Kiel, Wisconsin. 250 rabbits and over 175 different types of birds were seized. This is your friendly reminder that rabbits are not meant to be Easter Pets or temporary, they are a furever commitment. We know there are things that come up, when they need rehoming contact a rescue and NEVER set them free.... it is a death sentence.

We will be teaming up with local gatherings for Easter and allowing people to socialize with some of our fluffle. If you see us out and about, come snuggle one of our furry friends! They are the best serotonin boost you can ever find.

It's all for the love of bunnies ❤️

Bunnies physically can’t process corn, yet one of the main ingredients in lots of rabbit food is either corn or corn byproduct.

It might seem harmless, but can cause a perforated intestine, bloating, blockage, or even death. Here's why:

Digestive Issues: Rabbits lack the necessary enzymes to break down the complex carbohydrates found in corn. Their digestive systems are designed for a high-fiber diet primarily like hay and leafy greens.

High Starch Content: Starch intake can contribute to obesity in rabbits. It also leads to an imbalance of bacteria in their gastrointestinal systems.

Opt for Quality: When checking your bunny's food, aim for options with Timothy hay or orchard grass as the primary ingredient. Avoid those heavy in corn, wheat fillers, or unnecessary additives.

Set your bunny up for success and only purchase safe brands such as Oxbow, Science Select, and Sherwood.

If you’re not sure your rabbit food is safe or not, send us a picture of the bag and we’ll find out for you!

Our President is making progress with Miss Maple. Kara adopted Maple as a companion for Peter. They get along great and love each other immensely! Maple is a very aggressive girl, she often lunges and grunts when you go near her or her food, and did not like being touched. With consistency and patience she now seeks attention, cuddles for short periods of time, and will let us near her food.... she still has issues with hand feeding vegetables, but its a work in progress. Kara isn't giving up!

When a rabbit appears to be difficult, aggressive, or down right mean remember to take the time to allow them to get used to their surroundings. Sit down on the floor with them, let them approach you, let them be curious and remain patient. Rabbits can have complex personalities just like humans. It is up to us to show them what love is and gain their trust.

This will make your heart explode!

This is Leo, he came from the hoarding situation in Kiel. He came home with Johnny Lightning (who has passed). They were inseparable and loved every minute together! A wonderful family came to meet Leo, since we deemed Johnny unadoptable due to malnourishment and fragility. This particular family had a love at first sight, Leo greeted them immediately, we could all feel the instant bond. It was meant to be!

Despite Leo's rough start to life, he is now living like a king getting the love and care that he so dearly deserved from the get go. This is one of our success stories from this particular situation, and we wanted to share his hoppily ever after ♥️

Rescues are not damaged, they just didn't get what they deserved from humans. This story is one for the books!

The situation in Kiel was horrid, cages were caked with filth, rabbits went unfed and without water, they were not groomed, didn't see daylight nor did they get any physical touch. If my memory is on point there was over 250 rabbits and near 175 different types of birds. We were happy to assist and jump right in, providing medical evaluations on site, promptly cleaning their new cages, refreshing water, food and hay, and giving attention and compassion. We left with 5 of those bunnies, 2 had medical issues that couldn't be fought, 1 passed from age, 1 was adopted and we still have Miss June Bug! We are their voice, and we will speak loudly!

DO NOT ABANDON, we will take your bunny and love them whole heartedly until they're adopted or cross that rainbow bridge. We will never abandon, and YOU shouldn't set them free either! Domestic rabbits are different than wild, they will not survive!

Say it louder for the people in the back 📣 DO NOT ABANDON YOUR RABBIT OUTSIDE

Stray domestic rabbits will only get sick, injured, and/or killed. They are a different species than cottontails and do not have any survival instincts.

We have taken in 5 medical fosters this year and it is still January. What do they have in common? You guessed it - they were all found as strays.

Injuries/illnesses that our medical fosters were found with:
👅Broken jaw (rabbit cannot eat solid food)
🩻Multiple pelvis fractures, possibly damaged spinal cord, atrophied muscles, hind leg ataxia
🩺Severe upper respiratory infection that causes intense choking-like episodes where the rabbit can barely breathe
👁Irreparable eye injury caused by a bite wound on the face (eye needs to be enucleated)
💊Ear infection
🦠Mites
🪱Intestinal worms
🦷Dental problems
🧫 E. Cuniculi
🧴Urine scald

How can you help?
-If you see a stray rabbit, report it to us. The faster we can trap it, the less chance it has to get injured.
-Donate to help us cover the medical costs (www.newmexicohrs.org).
-Become a medical foster parent to help rabbits who have been let down by other humans (email [email protected]).

First photo is in 2022 when Mocha joined the rescue, the other were from November 2023 to now. She presented strongly with wry neck, head tilt, disorientation, lethargic and rapidly losing weight. She was diagnosed with EC, this is a parasitic infection that requires prompt attention, hours upon hours of care, physical therapy, and multiple feedings per day. She started out having to be laid up in a cage filled with towel barriers and blankets for comfort. She would roll and roll and roll, we had to be on guard 24/7 to assist her, early mornings, late nights, mid day.... all day everyday. Between 4 of us, we handled it well and had a steady routine. Anytime our hands, arms or face were near hers, she would give kisses to no end. Physical therapy consisted of towel barriers to help maintain balance, and assistance of holding her up, and challenging her to become independent. After 4 weeks of this on going care she showed excessive curiosity and ability to move around and hop on her own. Since we've given her the room, she cruises around like no other, rarely needs help, she gained her independence through hard work and perseverance.

This is a reminder that when you have a pet/pets they are a through sickness and in health commitment. They rely on YOU, they need you. Rescues will work to no end for the best possible outcome of any and all situations. We are so happy she is getting better, despite her new permanent head tilt. She is a strong girl, stay by your rabbits side, and I promise you won't regret it. If you need help, reach out and we can offer guidance.

All animals are a life long commitment, never temporary. We love you Mocha Bean, string bean, jelly bean.
