Miley is currently available for adoption. Please come to the shelter if you're interested in adopting. We are open until 1:00PM.

Miley can be a very sweet dog once she is comfortable with you. Miley is a very scared dog who needs a quiet home. We was told she is good with cats. We have learned she is okay with dogs but really is scared and hides from them. Miley would do best in a home with older kids or no kids due to how scared she is with loud noise.

Copper is a very strong and loyal dog. This is what his owner said:
-they used a wireless fence and he does great after you show him the areas he can go.
-he did fine with their cats, kids and dogs.
-he does good in a car.
-does great at the vet.
-will pull on a leash.
-knows some commands

What RCAS had learned:
-can be both lazy and energetic.
-does outstanding with the vet.
-has done well with the dogs at the shelter. We cannot test with cats.
-knows how to sit.
- very strong puller on the leash.
-loves food and treats.
-knows his name but has selective hearing.
-will jump but will try not to jump on you.

All pets can suffer from heat exhaustion or a heatstroke, but some breeds are more susceptible.
-Brachycephalic breeds (Short faces)
-Heavy-coat breeds

Other Factors Include:
-Old age
-Overweight
-Pets with certain pre-existing illnesses
-Pets on certain chronic medications

❗Cats DO NOT normally pant. A panting cat could be struggling to breathe.

Maddox joined RCAS in April with a painful skin condition. 🐾Tick Time🐾
Dogs and cats often come into contact with ticks when they are outside. Like humans, pets can get sick with tickborne diseases. Pets can also transport ticks from outside the home to inside, where the ticks may then bite people.

Daily checks to find and remove ticks that are crawling on or biting your pets help to keep them healthy. Ticks crawling on or biting a pet can be hard to spot, especially for breeds with long and dark fur. Some ticks are extremely small and may be hard to find anyway.

There are no vaccines for tickborne illnesses besides Lymes Disease. Keeping your pet on monthly flea and tick preventatives, as well as yearly Lyme vaccines, will help reduce the chance of them being bitten and contracting a tickborne illness.

RCAS gratefully acknowledges the help of Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary in aid of Marion, a stray dog who was unable to walk on his back legs and needed a second chance. Marion has undergone surgery on one leg and is set to undergo another surgery on Friday, thanks to the collective efforts of Southwest Virginia Veterinary Services, Jonesborough Animal Hospital, JerrPaula Casey Gracie Coffey and Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary. We are extremely grateful for everyone who is helping Marion.

Thank you so much to Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Yellow was a very sweet dog who came from Russell County Animal Shelter. He finally got his big backyard to play in.
