The pigeons are slowly getting more comfortable around me. Still working on finishing their permanent coup before I start homing them but they're really growing on me at this point.
Jace showing a lot of steadiness on this one
I don't know who had more fun today, us or the dogs
Finally got a chance to see the water training pay off
We got a little wet but we still had a great time with family chasing chukars in the rain at Cherrybend Pheasant Farm. I think Molly, Jace, and Quest had fun too โค๏ธ๐พ๐พ๐พ
Jace and I got our first goose together today. I wasn't worried about making him retrieve to hand on this, I just wanted him to enjoy it. He hasn't had any formal waterfowl retrieval training because I don't really know how to train for that but I have had him do some minimal water retrieval on game birds in case I ever drop one in a pond. His lack of training in this area shows how strong his genetics are to do it naturally โค๏ธ๐พ
"If you're cold, they're cold"..... or something like that. Anyway, I was cold. And they were rolling in the snow so.... we had a good hunt today, saw quite a few and was able to bag 1 rabbit.
First time at Holly Hills for Quest
Today is a really exciting day for us!!! We got an update on Jace and his training progress. Jace is our first bird dog and although I've been bird hunting with dogs many times over the years, I don't know much about how to train one. So when Jace was 6 months old I took him to Matt at Holly Hills and asked him if he would help us get Jace started. 4 weeks later Matt handed us a dog we could hunt with. From there I tried to learn more about training and hunted him often.
The best thing I was able to accomplish with Jace on my own was to improve his retrieving. But it still wasn't where I wanted it. After 2 years of hunting, Jace still had a couple other bad habits I didn't know how to correct. He's very competitive and wouldn't "back another dog" meaning when another dog found a bird he would stop and honor that. He would have to work his way up in the mix and see for himself if there was a bird there. He also wasn't as steady as I would like to see him on the flush meaning as soon as that bird started to fly he would break into a run after that bird. I never saw him try to pick up a bird off the ground that wasn't moving but if he runs before the shot that puts him in danger of getting shot if you are hunting with an inexperienced hunter.
I came across Kuckers Point Kennels page from trying to read and learn more about bird dog training. They were offering a 3 month long course over the summer and they are certified to teach the Ronnie Smith Silent Training method. I didn't know anything about this so I looked into it and found it to be exactly what I was looking for to polish up those bad habits. Jace is 2 months deep into his training and is progressing very well. I'm happy to be able to share some of his progress today. One video in particular, you can see when the birds fly he wants to give chase to that bird but he is learning to hold his position. From this he will learn to break after the gun shots go off.
