I was recently told I came off as blaming and insulting when telling someone my observations of their situation 🤷. It's very hard for people to hear their behaviors, actions or inactions have caused their dogs behavior problems. I'm not here to paint a pretty picture of why your dog is acting the way it is. My job is to help my clients understand WHY their dog is behaving the way it is. It's not always pretty. I will not sugar coat the problem. I will be respectful as well as empathetic but let's face it, if your dog is having severe problems, you don't need a pat on the bottom to tell you you're doing a great job! You need a reality check. You need an outside observation as to why things are happening the way they are and how you can make them better!

I WILL NOT take every client who asks for help. Just as you are vetting me as a trainer, I am vetting you as a client as well. If you are offended by my observations , we are obviously not on the same page. You can go to Pet Smart and have them tell you what you want to hear.

As for me, I will help you if you want help. I will answer your text at midnight. I will come to your house the day your dogs fight. I will answer your phone call . I will put myself and my plans aside and text you a book so you know what to do, or can better understand your current situation.

I love my clients and their dogs to the end! I am ALWAYS available . Always.

Say hello to Minnie! I worked with Minnie and her owners, including her 12 year old human sibling! Minnie has a hardy desire to say hello to friends in a very energetic way, which turns into "love nibbles" and tons of licking! She also likes to be a bit difficult on her walks especially with her sibling.
In our problem solving session, I helped her owners understand how to implement many opportunities for leadership. Minnie has a ton of misplaced energy because she doesn't have a job to do. So.........I taught her and her owners how to require a nice focused heel, how to meet people at the door, how to come out of her crate, and simply how to listen when asked to do something. We also taught Minnie how to become self aware, meaning, she understands her unwanted behavior causes a correction . It's just as important to teach a dog what we DON'T want, the same as rewarding them when they do what we DO want. Her human sibling was a natural with her newly taught handling skills and having more confidence to go on a nice walk with Minnie.
When a dog with a lot of energy doesn't have a job to do or doesn't feel as though she is being led, then the dog will become the leader and you'll typically see some unruly behavior. Dogs thrive on being led. They thrive with having a job, even in the form of obedience.

If you need help teaching your dog how to have a job, let me know! I'd love to help!

Um ........hello cutie 🥰
Met with Bella and her parents for a single problem solving session last night. Bella is having a hard time settling in her crate at night and when her owners are home and she needs to be crated. She works herself up so much so, she paces and foams at the mouth 😞
Did you know puppies can have TOO much freedom? When a puppy has too much freedom and not enough structure and routine, different behaviors erupt. For Bella, it's anxiety and lack of independence being taught. She was a delightful student though. We practiced crate games, food luring (she loves food), impulse control, response to name, leash pressure, heal position, engagement! YES, in one session we did ALL OF THAT!
Teaching Bella impulse control and giving her structure as well as more crate time, was the prescription for her. When she learns that her crate is actually valuable because good things happen when she goes in it, as well as teaching her to have an off switch, she will quickly realize the crate is actually great! To allow her to learn that the world can go on around her and she doesn't necessarily have to be a part of it, will help her learn to be a confident, balanced, independent adult!
I have no doubt this sweet and smart girl will soak up the information pretty quickly!

Tonight was my final session with Kina and her owners! We did 7 weeks of training which took them through basic commands with a prong collar and led into a complete introduction to e-collar. They did amazing! We worked on a lot of impulse control with jumping, outing(dropping) her favorite toys, maintaining a stay while on place, ignoring things on walks that may have concerned her, maintaining a nice heel position, a great recall which they struggled with, and all around better manners. This dog has more freedom now than ever and so do her owners!
We finished up at the dog park where we worked basic commands while under a lot of distraction. We also met other dogs through the fence and were pleasantly surprised how calm Kina was. While in the shelter, the staff noticed she was not very welcoming to.other dogs but she was also in a high stress environment. She is definitely learning to trust her owners in day to day life, as well as social outings. It's awesome to see a dog thrive when they've been given the proper information and Kina is definitely thriving!

I've been able to sneak some fun time in with Havoc and Tia! I've known Havoc since they brought him home as a puppy! Working place and the "right here" command is so good for him, but.......I gotta be ready for 130 pounds of him slamming against my leg🤣
The way I'm praising him might sound as though I'm surprised by his obedience. I'm not, lol. I'm actually calmly praising him because he's actually able to stay under control (mostly) and not so overexcited he can't think straight! Think bull in a china shop 🤣
Tia is a sweetheart too! I haven't done any formal work with her because she's not nearly as high drive as Havoc is. She just wants love!
I LOVE these two❤️💙

Worked with this gal tonight! Kina has been in her new home for several weeks and has been working on obedience and structure. She struggles with impulsive behaviors like jumping up a lot, mouthing, and she's very persistent about someone playing with her all the time. She's also very distracted once outside and all obedience goes out the window! As with most rescue dogs, her new owners don't have a complete picture of her past but what they do know is that she possibly just didn't have exposure to a lot of things in day to day life. She's in the right place now and her owners are helping her to blossom and become an even better dog!

Tonight we worked on teaching her that jumping on people is a no go, and introduced the out command. The out command actually teaches her several behaviors. One way teaches her to drop a resource AND disengage from it, and the other is used to help her understand how to get out of a space her owner doesn't want her to occupy. This command also simultaneously works on impulse control, which is a plus!
All in all, she did really well and was pretty receptive of all her newly taught skills!

Worked with this sweet boy today! Sloan is amped up A LOT. He goes ballistic every time he hears something, especially people pulling into the driveway, or coming through the door, or the garage door opening. Many little triggers set him off and it's annoying to his family!
Sloan is a smart boy. He knows a lot of obedience but that doesn't necessarily mean good behavior. So, today we worked on stopping the nuisance barking and then teaching him to relax afterwards and to just be a dog! No need to worry and be alert all day long!
This guy is well on his way to a new chill lifestyle and his owners will be Creating new patterns of behavior!

This is an owner video shared with me on the awesome progress they are making with their dogs! This particular video shows their dog in Lowe's. He hasn't been able to go to Lowe's in almost 2 years because he would be so anxious and overly aroused. They couldn't walk him because he would pull all over the place, he was fearful of all the busyness and loud noises in the store, and he would whine incessantly if he saw other dogs and kids.

We've been working for 3 sessions on basic obedience, structure and accountability. The third lesson was all about a structured walk and more recall practice. It's important to help your dog to understand their focus should be on you, the handler. When you have focus and engagement with your dog, you can do so much more with them! Here in this video, the owner is using engagement moves they learned in our session. This is to keep the dog focused on her instead of him being focused on the environment. This is not a forever answer to the issues he's having, but it's a start! It was literally a day after our FIRST walking session.
Another thing to keep in mind is that all the structure and accountability they have been teaching their dogs over the last 3 weeks, is also contributing to their walking success.
So proud of this family! Their lives have literally changed for the better, in such a short amount of time!!
Great job guys💙

Wanna feed your dogs better! Here's an awesome recipe and fairly easy to source ingredients. The liver is typically in the frozen food section but some stores sell it in the meat department. Same with heart. I typically find my liver, kidney and heart at weis markets, and mussels too. The mussels are in the frozen department where the fish is.
I would feed this raw to my dogs because cooking does destroy some of the nutrients. I also use a mushroom powder instead because it's a lot easier to find.

If you're interested and need some help sourcing or just guidance, let me know! You don't have to feed this daily, although that would be best. Feed it a few times a week or use as a treat! Some whole food is better than none!

Good morning guys! This morning I was having fun with my dogs! I love them so much! The most simple things I was asking them to do, and they were thrilled to do it! All it takes is 5-10 minutes of drills with your dog! I did simple tasks they know and my dogs love to do them quickly! You can add any skill into this that your dog knows. All they want is to be with you and work with you......well...and the food😁 Notice my dogs are not perfect! They messed up and broke commands and Klover got confused with what I was asking and it's OKAY! Practice with them. They learn clarity, impulse control, how to switch from one command to another as well as pay attention to who I'm working with! This was a great mental exercise for them and to be honest, they wanted more!

Look at this beauty! This is Darma. She's a 12 week old Weimador puppy. I have not physically met her because she lives in VA, but I've been in contact with her owner via phone calls. We have worked through some initial crate training and separation anxiety to where Darma actually goes into her crate willingly and has no issues with it! Recently her owner has had some trouble with normal puppy behaviors such as socializing her with other dogs, her extreme love of all people, and complete puppy brain outside which lead to her eating something toxic😳.
A lot of these behaviors are very typical and can easily be taught how to deal with, over the phone.
If you need help and are not local, that doesn't mean I can't help you! Touch base with me and I can help guide you into a much better space with your dog!

In lieu of the recent concerns of Purina food causing many health concerns in dog food, I've spoken to several people wanting to feed their dogs better! I understand changing foods and methods can be overwhelming. This shared post is a great gateway to feeding your dog a better, more biologically appropriate diet. While it's still using kibble as a base, the examples given are to add some fresh, whole foods. Some whole foods are better than none!

Look at these 2 Angels 😁
I met with Grey and Jetty's owners last week after a fight over a resource that caused one of them to need staples......
This wasn't the first time there was a disagreement between them, but it was one of the more severe.
My goal for the initial visit was to try and understand the relationship between the dogs, but more importantly between the dogs and owners. I needed to understand what was going on relationship wise so I could offer them hope for a better future with their dogs. Once we all had an understanding of the situation, we went to work on the problems of impulse control, structure and routine, and accountability! Wait, didn't I say the fight was over a resource?? Yes it was, but before we could even address the resource guarding, we went for creating an atmosphere of 1. Leadership and 2. Accountability. In order to change the dynamic between the owners and their dogs, they had to prove themselves worthy to follow. The dogs needed to understand who was in charge. Who was leading and it wasn't them any longer. We worked on a couple obedience commands, taught the dogs the word NO, and held them accountable through fair corrections. These few things alone pack a huge punch and can drastically change relationships between both dogs and dogs and owners.
In future visits we will continue to work on obedience, structure, and accountability. We will also add in e-collar training, which will be super beneficial for resource guarding, but will also give the owners and dogs so much more freedom!
To date, owners report things are going well and Grey and Jetty have been more responsive to them. No fights! Stay tuned as we progress further with this family!

*Update as of 1/4/24 - 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died.

Since 12/5/23 in the 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' group on Facebook there have been 48 dogs and 3 cats sick eating Purina, 10 of which have died. It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Join the Facebook group 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' for additional information and resources.

info from Savings Pets One Pet @ a Time:

"Stop the food immediately. Post in the group above what your pets current diet is and medical conditions and we will help you find a more nutritious and safer diet.

Save the pet food. Do NOT release it to Purina in any circumstances.

Contact your vet and request a copy of your pets medical records. Ask the vet to report your concerns to Purina.

Report it to the FDA (https://truthaboutpetfood.com/report-a-suspect-risk-pet.../)

Report it to Purina (https://www.purina.com/contact-us)

Do NOT agree to send them the food. If you feel compelled to do so, only send a small portion. Keep the rest of the food in the freezer.

Do NOT send the medical records to Purina.

Document your conversation with Purina.

Purina may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Eventually, if there is a class action lawsuit you will be unable to join if you do this or if you want to file your own lawsuit.

Consider getting your pet food tested:(https://truthaboutpetfood.com/help-to-check-your-pet-food/) This would be helpful if you want to pursue legal action.

Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."

So........I always forget to take pics of the dogs I do one on ones with, so this is the best the owner could do🤣
The heart is placed around Tilly who was acting like a little tyrant! She was becoming more and more bossy and actually aggressive towards her 4 leg siblings. She didn't like them to be near the food, near the pantry where food and treats were, in her space on the bed or under the table. If she disagreed with them, she let them know in a physical way.
I worked with her owner for a couple hours, ironing out all the details and situations where Tilly would act out. We reproduced some of the situations and gave her a consequence for her behavior. We taught her what No means and that a consequence follows thereafter. She's been doing so much better in the home and her owner and the dogs are less stressed! 👍

In the past couple of weeks I've had a few clients reach out to me with problems they're having with their and it all boils down to a few things. 1. Are you the leader in the home who sets the tone of the energy in the household with your dog/s.
2. Does your dog know what NO means.
3. Are you holding your dog accountable when unwanted behavior pops up.
Notice none of those items were about affection. None of those items were about privileges or valuable items or things to your dog, and none of them were about rewards. The reason for that is because those are the fun and easy things your dog receives. We give them those things daily, which isn't a problem UNTIL..........it IS the problem. If you aren't leading your dog through leadership and accountability then you'll see a dog who will step up and lead, and in a way we don't want. You'll see a bossy, tyrant with bad behavior like barking, jumping on people, barking, reactivity, resource guarding, very selective hearing, pulling on the leash, demanding attention/affection all the time, crate insecurity, destructive behavior and the list goes on! This is no way for a dog to live and it makes it miserable for the humans too. Instead, lead your dog through leading them by giving them structure, teaching them obedience so they have a job to do, and teaching them what No means! If we aren't telling them no and following up with a consequence, we're telling them yes......think about that. If you can't tell your dog no and give a proper consequence, then all those unwanted behaviors will rule the roost.
If you need help teaching your dog no, reach out to me and let's begin the New Year on the right foot!
