People may wonder why we're so adamant about spaying and neutering pets. Well, this could have been written by ANY SHELTER! I've worked for a small, underfunded, overcrowded county shelter. The only solution is to stop making more. Please, stop making excuses, stop putting it off, stop "accidental" litters (male+female=LITTER....no accident). Just STOP IT. Lives depend on it.

Long post ahead: As we finish the first quarter of 2024, we have been getting requests for an update on the state of our shelter.

While we’ve had some positives—great adoptions, high volunteer engagement, medical recoveries—the reality is that our shelter is still struggling.

We are continuing to see higher numbers than we can handle. Just when we thought things reached their peak, March brought us the highest number of dogs ever recorded coming through our shelter in a single month (134 dogs). For comparison, this is around double the average monthly intake of 5 years ago, in our same capacity.

At the time of this post, we have over 95 dogs for our 32-kennel shelter system. This is a great strain on a system that is already stretched thin, and one that does not have any more space. Understaffed, underfunded, and overstrained – this has unfortunately become the chorus of animal shelters around the nation.

Financial struggle, lack of access to veterinary services, the housing crisis—you name it— all contribute to pet overpopulation. We are getting dozens of calls a day asking for help (in one single day, we once tallied requests for over 100 animals!). We meet every request that we can, but it pains us to have to turn away others, knowing that we might have been their only hope. Despite our reach of assistance going further than ever before, the unmet demand for help is growing faster than we can keep up.

This ‘new normal’ is not sustainable. We scramble, we beg, we get creative and we squeak by. We are running out of ways to do that. Our partners are running out of ways to help us.

If things continue as they have been, our shelter will be pushed to discontinue many services that we feel are vital to our community. We will do our best to limit what is cut, but we cannot continue on with our current programs.

Despite these challenges, we are still proud of our accomplishments and remain dedicated to helping animals the best way we can. Over 2,500 animals come through our care, and we can confidently say we are doing the most we can with what we have; we spread our resources as far as they will go. If we can, we will. While it may add a lot of work to our plates, we will not stop our creative solutions, and moving animals high and low until they can reach their final destination: fixed, safe, healthy, and loved.

We have seen some excellent adoptions so far in 2024, and we are excited for more ahead. We are proud of our dedicated staff who show up for the animals day in and day out, despite the challenges. We are grateful for an amazing volunteer group, who provide countless hours of their time to help the cause; who aren’t afraid to get dirty, or put their hearts through the wringer, if it helps improve the life of an animal. We are thankful for generous donors who help stock the shelter with supplies and help with vet bills. We are indebted to Shelter Friends and their never-ending support, right by our side.

Our shelter may be too old and too small; it may be too crowded and too strained—but, there is a lot of love behind our doors, and a fervent dedication to a brighter future ahead.

If you read this far, thank you for caring about your shelter!

Meet ASTRID, our newest foster dog! She's about 2 years old, spayed, and she's SUCH a love! She even smiles! She's excellent with other dogs, but she'll do best in a cat- free home. Contact Best Friends in Houston for information about adopting her.

Jen’s Story

Jen has been in the pet-care field for over a quarter of a century! Beginning in 1992, when she began working as Kennel Technician at a veterinary hospital, and progressing to include experience as a veterinary assistant/technician, Office Manager, and Kennel Manager. In 2015, she began working at a small, rural animal shelter in the Sierra foothills of California, where she discovered her love of rescuing and fostering dogs in need!

Jen became a Certified Dog Trainer in 2018, allowing her to interpret dogs’ body language, and to decide how best to manage different canine temperaments. This has been invaluable in fostering dogs with difficult histories, as well as in decoding day-to-day interactions among the dogs in her care.

Jen’s husband, John, is a disabled veteran of the US Army, and they have chosen to move forward with fostering for Dogs on Deployment. They look forward to being able to help current members of the armed forces keep their pets while serving our country!!

We look forward to caring for your fur babies in our new hometown and the surrounding areas!! Please contact us via Facebook messenger, phone, or email!!
