The Lompoc Pet Pantry is open every Tuesday 2-4. In those two hours we serve 85 families with 307 animals. It's hard work, but we have fun (we really do). CAPA purchases the majority of the dry food, but please consider donating other items. Wet food, toys - dogs in particular (gently used is perfect), collars, shampoo is also in great need. Just about anything pet related. Please keep us in mind! Thanks!

The last of the Lake Fire evacuees were returned to their owner today. These three kitties were very happy to go home, a home that was still there thanks to the efforts of firefighters...and a big thank you from the owner to the staff at the Lompoc Shelter for taking care of her fur babies.

Is your dog an escape artist? We've had a few at the Lompoc Shelter, so CAPA purchased Coyote Rollers for two outside kennels. What are Coyote Rollers you ask? Originally invented to keep coyotes out, they work just as well keeping dogs, cats too, in their yards.

Thanks to master-installer Rudy Avila, we now have escape-proof kennels. Simply, you install them at the top of a fence, any fence, and they roll, so the animal isn't able to get a grip to go over the fence. Brilliant.

Coyote Rollers can also be made with PVC pipe, easy to make and easy to install.

We recieved a heart breaking call this evening from a community member with a lost cat. They had received a phone call stating that the cat had been hit by a car and SBCAS was requesting money via Venmo to pay for the emergency care.

No animal agencies will do this.

If you receive a call, hang up and call the agency directly.
Report the call to police.
Keep looking for your lost pet.

Bunnies make great pets, they have big personalities, and if you've never seen a rabbit do a binky or a zoomie, well...

Would you like to have a pet rabbit that lives freely in your home like a cat or dog would? Free roaming is a fantastic way to keep rabbits. Providing space and freedom to move around promotes physical and mental well-being. Free roaming also makes it easy and natural for you to play and interact with your bunnies since they have more opportunities to approach and engage with you throughout the house. You’ll be able to observe your rabbit’s natural behaviors more closely, fostering a deeper understanding of their personality and preferences. Plus, you can enjoy the hilarious moments when they zoom across the room or binky joyfully in unexpected places!

If free roaming is your plan, that’s terrific, but introduce space slowly and make sure you have rabbit-proofed your home. Keep in mind that rabbits introduced to new environments need time to acclimate. When given access to an entire house immediately, they may become overwhelmed, hiding instead of exploring. Start by setting up an ex-pen with their essentials - litter box, hay feeder, water crock, a hide box, and a toy or two. Watch your rabbit’s behavior. Introduce more space gradually, encouraging exploration and more interaction. You’ll be able to tell when your rabbit is comfortable and confident enough to free roam. At this point, you can remove the pen but leave their home base as-is so they always have their own space they can retreat to.

Come and meet some free-roaming bunny candidates at our Santa Maria and Lompoc shelters, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In Santa Barbara, visit our partners Tuesday to Friday 1 p.m- 5 p.m and Sat-Sun 12p.m.-5p.m
