Another big thank you to Angel City Pit Bulls who took in 19 (!) dogs in the last week (including these sweet puppies who were dumped in a box at the shelter😢). He arrived at the shelter as a stray end of February. Since he gets out regularly for enrichment with playgroup staff, volunteers haven’t really taken him out one on one for yard time, and now that he’s been made RESCUE ONLY, volunteers aren’t allowed to take him out at all, so we just have kennel video. He was very sweet at the kennel. All he wanted was affection and pushed himself up against the kennel door soliciting pets. He has a kennel mate and is consistently described as tolerant in playgroup with other large pups. He mostly just mingles and likes to keep to himself and will sometimes give corrections for space. He was made rescue only because he can be grumbly and growly when being collared for playgroup. He might have sensitivity around his neck and/or to being restrained. Playgroup staff said he solicits affection though, once he’s collared and in the yard. They also said he is vocal on the few occasions when he does play in the yard. Kodiak is deadlined for TOMORROW (6/14). He can only be RESCUED by an active city rescue partner. If there’s a savvy handler who wants to foster or adopt, DM us! 🚨🆘 72 HOUR ALERTED & URGENT! PRINCE #A2100183 NEEDS RESCUE BY END OF DAY SUNDAY 6/9! 🆘🚨 This 2 yr old cutie is Prince. He arrived at the shelter as a stray in April. He was microchipped but no one came for him. Due to overcrowding, Prince was housed in a crate for over a month. Understandably he got pretty stressed being a young dog confined for 24/7 with no enrichment or exercise. He started displaying negative behavior toward staff. Now that he’s in a bigger kennel, his behavior has improved greatly and he hasn’t received a negative note since. We met Prince for the first time last week and he was an energetic but sweet boy. He gets really excited with new friends and can get jumpy, but calms down greatly when you show him affection. All Prince wanted to do once he settled was be by my side getting pets. He takes treats super gently and knows a few commands as well! He’s a really good boy! Sadly, Prince is now 72 HOUR ALERTED because of the the behavior he displayed when housed in the crate. He only has until SUNDAY 6/9 END OF DAY to be RESCUED. He will be put to sleep on Monday morning (6/10) if not saved. RESCUED!🎉🎉 Thank you Bubbles Dog Rescue URGENT- RED LISTED! SWEET FURBY NEEDS RESCUE by FRI 06/07 4PM‼️ This 2 year old boy came into the shelter as an underweight stray on 7/13/23. 😞 Despite clearly needing some TLC, Furby was immediately FRIENDLY and connected with volunteers. On his 1st outing, he tried to climb into a volunteer’s lap right away for some affection!😅 Furby loves to run around the yard & chase toys. This young pup had not had much training before the shelter. Volunteers have worked a lot with him! He can now sit & wait, takes treats gently, and is less jumpy. In the shelter’s large playgroups, Furby has usually been muzzled due to initial barrier reactivity. Playgroup staff report that he is social and tolerant but can become pushy with play. However, he is steerable. Due to overcrowding, Furby was housed in a crate and then later moved to a training kennel, adjacent to the play yards & out of public view. Furby was not getting out enough for enrichment, while seeing other dogs in the yard. A couple months ago, Furby was moved to a regular kennel.☀️We have seen his kennel presence improve, he seems less stressed, and he finally started to put on weight! He’s like a different dog!🥰 Furby has now been at the shelter for nearly a YEAR and sadly, his TIME IS UP! He must be RESCUED by FRI JUNE 7th. He needs a RESCUE (501c3 ONLY) to get him out safely (not adoptable to the public thru the shelter). She’s a petite girl weighing in at just under 50 lbs. She was surrendered to the shelter in September because her owner had no home. She was living in a crate at the shelter due to overcrowding and was wary of new people when she first arrived. One staff member in particular bonded with her though, and she started to come out of her shell. Once moved outside, volunteers got to know the sweet, fun girl Sally is too! She loves affection and will happily spend her yard time near you getting pets. She’s a huge fan of toys too and loves to romp around with any toy you toss her. She also did great during a photoshoot with @animalia.tichuphotography ! Multiple playgroup and kennel staff have also grown to love Sally. She’s been such a nice girl with all of us, we’re all rooting for her to make a safe exit! Sally is described as selective in playgroup. She’s made a lot of progress since she first got to the shelter, but she definitely prefers people to other pups. She’s usually muzzled in playgroup because she overcorrects other dogs when asking for space. She’s been doing better though, especially in yards with super social dogs who pick up on her cues, but unless super savvy and able to manage her around other pups, she’s best as an only dog for now. She’s been in playgroup quite a few times and is described as tolerant around other dogs. Though still a bit wary when being collared and unleashed, she has shown great improvement! We’ve had Diamond out a few times and she definitely prefers a slower approach but you can quickly win her over if treats are involved! Once she’s comfortable, all she wants to be is in your lap or by your side ❤️ She loves to give kisses and cozy up next to you for lots of pets! She’ll even show off her playful side if tossed a toy! They shared the yard, mostly keeping to themselves. Sadly, John is now MEDICALLY ALERTED for being a senior with high fear, anxiety, and stress. He’s also noted to be underweight and to have trouble walking. He only has until TUESDAY 5/28 @ 4PM to be ADOPTED or RESCUED. It was said he tried to bite a citizen while loose as a stray but we have no further details of what happened. He has shown us what a sweet, easy boy he is. She didn’t want to leave the rolling cage and when the staff member got her out, she quickly moved to the corner of the yard and stayed there the rest of the outing. She accepted pets from both the staff member and volunteer in the yard with her though, but was too nervous to be interested in anything else. She’s a sweet girl, just very overwhelmed in the shelter environment. Due to her injury, she has not gone into playgroup, but a social female dog was brought into the yard with her and she was uninterested, just remaining in her corner. We’re hoping Everest can not only get the medical care she needs, but go into a loving home where she can relax and thrive. Everest is MEDICALLY ALERTED for a fractured tibia/fibula. Meet Dixie! #A2125452 This beautiful youngster (about 1 year 3 months old) is just DYING for attention at the Chesterfield Square / South L.A. shelter, where she was surrendered in mid-February by her owner for “landlord.” When Dixie first arrived, she was extremely fractious, so she was in the “behavior” room for awhile before being moved into the adoption room. She almost got adopted last weekend, but when staff tried to put her into a transfer cage, she got quite feisty- growling, hissing and swatting. The potential adopter then decided against it. We totally understand why someone might have changed their mind upon seeing Dixie’s rougher side, but hope we will soon find the right family for her who will give her a chance to learn to trust. As you can see in the video, she does give me numerous swats, but never with her claws out. My guess is that maybe she wasn’t socialized that well by her previous owner, so she is confused about what to do with attention once she gets it, and maybe doesn’t know how to play with others. That said, I don’t think it will take that long to come around, because she really is clamoring for affection and playtime. If you’re an experienced cat lover and wouldn’t be put off by her behavior when staff try to transfer her (it also happened when they tried to move her into the adoption room- just scared and confused), we’d love to introduce you to her! She’s been in a cage for almost 3 months now and she needs to be free to run around! Then this new program, “Foster South LA” might be just what you are looking for!! We have almost 500 dogs at the South LA Shelter at the moment - rescues are full, dogs are sitting for months and months without enough enrichment, and we have so many amazing dogs who would make great companions. In order to provide some relief, we have started this program as a partnership between shelter volunteers, Blue Man Dog .inc and A Purposeful Rescue as a way to match Fosters with the right dog, provide support, supplies, troubleshoot questions, etc… Please watch this reel for exactly how it works and join us.
