With every vision there comes a lot of hard work. We are excited to announce the opening of our new Copeland’s Dog Obedience 101 Training Center in Canaan, IN. We are giving private lessons, group lessons, board/trains and have a few kennels available for regular boarding. Optimal Equine & Canine Massage will have an office on site to provide canine massage. Without the hard work of our friends, family and trusted companies this Training Center would have remained just a dream. I would especially like to thank Britt, Brienne, & Tyler for help with getting the building ready for improvement; Thor Crete Construction; Mark Keach Heating; KM Excavation; Clemens Eicher; Southeastern Indiana REMC; Coo Par Concrete; Demaree Trucking; Hershbergers Insulation; and Adam King for all of the hard work they did to make this dream a reality!

Willow is a 1 year Bernese Mountain Dog/Poodle cross who came for private Ecollar lessons. She started classes looking like a typical Bernese Mountain Dog but got a Portuguese Water Dog “Lion” cut before we finished. She made me laugh when I took her picture after the haircut. She turned really quickly causing her ears to fly out as if she was saying Da-duh! She knew she looked cute! She also did very well learning the new cues when the Ecollar was layered into her training.

Jill, 9 month old Border Collie, is here for a Board and Train! I have not got to train a Border Collie since my childhood when I had my border collie and am excited to be able to work with her.

Alleigh, 3 year old Labrador Retriever, has finished a 2-week Board and Train. Alleigh was a very strong leash puller and had no handler awareness. She severely injured her owner this spring when she pulled her owner down & drug her, breaking her owner’s ankle. We enjoyed turning Alleigh around from a “worst nightmare” to take for a walk into a pleasure to walk.

If anyone has a well-trained dog and is interested in volunteering with their dog as a Therapy Dog team, please message me. We have a need in our community at several nursing homes in the Madison area who would love to have weekly visits. Your dog would need to pass the Therapy Dog test which is similar to the AKC Advanced Canine Good Citizen test (Community Canine).

Mowgli has been coming for private lessons. He is a 7 month old Australian Shepherd/Golden Retriever cross who was having just a little too much fun at College with his owner. He thought he was supposed to take her for a walk! We have worked hard and shown him that he is supposed to walk on a loose leash beside her like a proper gentleman. They are looking forward to walking all over campus together as a team.

The Jefferson County Southpaws 4-h Dog Club set up a Pirates of the Caribbean themed booth at the 5th Annual Trick or Treat Drive Thru at the Fairgrounds this afternoon. I’m not sure if we have more fun pulling it together or the trick or treaters have more fun seeing it!

Jeepers Creepers! The Jefferson County 4-H Trick or Treat Drive Thru is back for a 5th year! Dress your goblins and ghouls up to the nines and bring them to the fairgrounds on October 26th from Noon-2:30 pm. Come bring your child to read to our therapy dogs and practice their oral reading skills!

🐶 Reading to Dogs is on October 26 at 10 AM to noon at Madison Public Library. Come meet the therapy dogs certified by Madison, IN Chapter- The Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs Inc. and enjoy some quality time reading together. We have a wonderful selection of pup-approved books for all ages. 📚❤️

This beautiful Labrador Retriever is Scout! She is 11 months old. Scout has an injury and her veterinarian did not want her on any kind of collar until she heals. A head halti was aggravating her immensely and could also put pressure on her injury. She quickly learned she could pull her owner anywhere she wanted to in a harness. We added the ECollar with positive reinforcement and had instant results. No pressure on her injury and a happy dog wagging her tail trotting alongside her owner on a loose leash. Good job Scout!!

Polite Door Entry

5 year old, Cam, came with her Papa to private lessons with Beau and practiced polite door entry and exit. Your dog should remain in a calm state of mind when it is invited inside and outside. Brienne from Optimal Equine & Canine Massage visited Fritzie, Fox Terrier, today to give him his first massage. Massage helps a puppy learn to relax and enjoy a stranger touching him. This will help with future grooming and veterinarian visits. Brienne said massage serves to enhance growth, development and support of the immune system by stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation throughout the muscular system.

Adorable Angus was here this afternoon for a private lesson. He worked on Place, Loose Lead Walking and Recall. Then he said, “I got all that down pat, what else have you got to show me?” So we worked on some tricks! #copelandsdogobedience101 #labradorretriever #dogobedience

Starting work on “Place!” The “Place” command is a great tool to teach to a nervous dog. It gives you a place to send your dog when things get too busy in your home and you need a safe spot for your dog to be. As they get used to holding the command it gives them something to concentrate on instead of being worried about what is going on around them. Doug is doing very well!

Farmer’s Day

Today is National Farmer’s Day so Ozzie and I found a farmer to practice our Obedience skills nearby as the farmer worked. Be sure and Thank a Farmer 🧑‍🌾 today!

Ozzie is on his second day of training and is such a smart, biddable boy! All the crows nearby thought so too!

Life with Dogs

I always remember having dogs in my life. My father, Ronald “Pee Wee” Day, raised the best beagle dogs around when I was a child. I remember he always strove to raise short-legged beagles with lots of freckles on their legs, white tipped tails, and their ear tips had to meet under their chin. He always enjoyed listening to their deep barks as they chased the rabbits. Most of the time he just took them out to watch their tails wagging in the bushes and listening to them as they chased rabbits. I remember when he had a litter of puppies he would have all his friends watch for a rabbit that had been hit on the road to give to him and it was my job to drag the rabbit and get the puppies started tracking. I was always amazed that the rabbit would literally be 5 feet away from the puppies and they could see it but their little noses would hit the ground and they would follow the scent to find it rather than looking up in the air and seeing it.

I wanted to show in 4-H so started with Dad’s beagle dogs for the first few years. I wanted to try a different breed but Dad thought the only dog for a child was a beagle. My church elder, Arthur France, had a litter of Border Collie mixed puppies and I brought home a puppy. I called him Lucky Trixter, cause I knew I would be Lucky if Dad let me keep him! He did and our adventure began! Lucky was always by my side and was my best friend. We showed in 4-H and in 1982 won Grand Champion Obedience and Showmanship. We also showed at the Indiana State Fair Dog show that year. Back then we showed outdoors in the infield of the race track. We had many adventures together as I grew up. He was my first special dog and taught me so many things. I made mistakes with him and I have strove to learn and grow in my training and honor his memory.
