THIS! For some, absolutely do I believe in wet saddle pads. But for most, I don’t care if I’m on them 5 minutes. When I saddle my colts, I decide on ONE thing I’m going to work on that day. Just one. And if they figure it out and keep trying within the first 5 minutes I’ll get off. Because next time I get on. They are are going to look for that release even faster!

Why do I like to start 2 year old colts?
Because they are more impressionable.
It is true that 2 year olds can’t take a lot of work, their bodies and aren’t ready for it yet. But that doesn’t mean we can’t give them the best possible start we can and get their MINDS correct. My 2 year old starts don’t get ridden long and hard, they don’t need it. But by starting them correctly at this impressionable age, we get rid of a lot of problems that are seen in horses that are started later on. I love starting 2 year olds, and if done correctly, it can make a huge difference in the training of a horse!

Seasoning and entering young horses has by far been the hardest and most humbling part of my career.

Learning to take a win as a win no matter how small. The “we tipped a barrel but we didn’t spook at the crowed” is still a win. “We were late and tracked the calf to the end of the pen” But we tracked the calf and didn’t jump the barrier! STILL A WIN🥇

You just have to be willing to look like an idiot
while you figure it out....
Because once you figure it out, everyone else
will look like an idiot for doubting you.

If anyone has ever done business for the public, you can agree it’s not easy. I bought this filly as a yearling, and she all but shredded her shoulder and hip muscles. I grew so fond of her in the many hours we spent together doctoring her injuries I decided I was just going to keep her.

Fast forward she grew really strong and healed better than I ever hoped and ended up going to the most amazing home. She’s been kicking butt at shows and loving her as I did and that makes all of it worth it❤️
