Your help is needed to preserve FOIA in Arkansas. The FOIA law is the best defense ordinary citizens have against an out of control government. Link in comments.
After repeated efforts to weaken the Freedom of Information Act, concerned Arkansans from all corners of the state from every political affiliation have come together in a grass-roots effort to enshrine the FOIA into the Arkansas Constitution and state law through a group called Arkansas Citizens for Transparency (ACT).
ACT seeks to: 1. ensure that any further changes to the people’s law must be approved by a vote of the people; 2. provide a definition for “public meeting,” which has been a hole in the FOIA for some time; 3. safeguard the ability of any citizen to enforce their disclosure rights by protecting the ability to recover attorney fees in the event that a request is wrongfully denied; 4. create a penalty for bad actors who knowingly violate the FOIA; 5. continue to ensure the security of public officials and their minor children; and 6. create a commission to allow citizens to enforce their rights without having to hire an attorney.
