Halloween can be a fun time, but it can also present potential dangers for pets. Here are some safety tips to keep your furry friends safe:

1. Keep Candy Out of Reach

• Chocolate and sugar-free candies with xylitol are toxic to dogs and cats. Store candy securely, and educate guests and children to avoid sharing treats with pets.

2. Use Pet-Safe Costumes

• If dressing up your pet, ensure the costume is comfortable, non-restrictive, and free from small, chewable parts. Always supervise pets in costumes to ensure they’re comfortable and not stressed.

3. Be Cautious with Decorations

• Lit candles in jack-o’-lanterns, electric cords, and small decorations can pose fire hazards or risk of ingestion. Opt for pet-safe options like flameless LED candles and keep small items out of reach.

4. Limit Access to Trick-or-Treaters

• The constant doorbell ringing, unfamiliar costumes, and increased noise can stress pets. Consider setting up a safe, quiet space where they can feel secure, away from the commotion.

5. Ensure Pets Have ID Tags

• With doors frequently opening and closing, pets may try to escape. Make sure they have a collar with ID tags, and if possible, ensure they’re microchipped with up-to-date contact information.

6. Be Mindful of Glow Sticks and Glow Jewelry

• While generally non-toxic, the substances in glow sticks can cause mouth irritation and drooling. Keep these items out of reach to avoid any accidents.

7. Watch for Outdoor Hazards

• If taking your pet outside, be mindful of discarded candy or wrappers. Keep them on a leash to prevent accidental ingestion of hazardous items.
