Valero had a big week full of lots of great things! We spent some time polishing up our groundwork, working on softening our sides, being ponied (both off of other horses and ATVs!), and exploring out of the ring.
This guy is quick to learn, and while we still have some work to do, it’s so fun to feel things start coming together. Although if you’d ask Valero, it’s just exhausting to be a cute yellow pony like himself. 🥱

#HOPTeamValero headed to Blacksburg this week to spend a few days with our friends at McDonald Equine. (Joe is a previous ATFO competitor himself!)
Valero was an absolute ✨super star ✨ on our field trip, both hauling and settling in nicely. We spent a good amount of time focusing on our ground work and going back to the basics under saddle. I was really pleased with how much relaxation and confidence Valero was able to develop in such a short amount of time.
📚We have lots of homework to do, but #HOPTeamValero is well on his way! 📚
We have also discovered that Valero has anhydrosis, but we have successfully been able to get him sweating.💧However, I feel that he would benefit from a supplement designed for horses that do not sweat well. If anyone would interesting in sponsoring this, please let me know.

🌟Heading into week 3 with #HOPTeamValero, and we had our first ride today! What a smooth riding critter, all of his gaits are so comfortable. I also was so pleased with how he really started to soften up for me from start to finish.
This guy is really starting to get the program and even meets me at the gate to come in for breakfast in the mornings. Later this week we will be going on a field trip for a few days! Stay tuned to see what we get into!😁

Another week down with #HOPTeamValero! 💫
We spent some more time developing our relationship and working on trust, and well as working on his fitness. Everyday you can see him grow, whether it be only an inch (which is most days) or maybe a foot.
This guy has been an interesting challenge thus far, but I am really starting to see him settle in and relax. This video shows his first attempt at the teeter totter bridge- and what a rock star! 🌟
It’s funny to watch what he finds challenging and what he tackles with ease. Stay tuned to see what other adventures we explore this summer!

This is my First Required Post for the Appalachian Trainer Face Off
I wasn’t quite sure how to approach my first required post, as I am just getting to know my new horse. I was told a few things about #HOPTeamValero, specifically that “Until he likes you, he can be hard to catch”. So I decided to start there, and work on earning his trust.
On day one, I had moments of feeling like he might never trust me. I spent a lot of time with him, grooming him and working with him in the round pen throughout the day. When I felt we were in a good place, I turned him out for the afternoon. It took me around 15-20 minutes to get him caught again, not so bad. Then again this morning we played the game for another 20 minutes. So we hit the round pen again today and I could really see things start to click for him. I was able to catch him this evening in under 5 minutes 🙌.
After I caught him, we were able to move around the field together, and he stuck with me until I left. While we haven’t been together long, it sure feels good to see things start to click and see him start to trust me, one day at a time.

As promised, here is a look at #HOPTeamHyde’s first week under saddle with me!
Our first ride started out with the same stickiness and unwillingness to move forward that we had on the ground. Over the past week, I’ve really seen him grow in his comfort and relaxation under saddle. We even managed to find a canter today, just a week after we could barely move off into a walk.
Although he has his reservations, Hyde tries really hard to please. We are slowly but surely unpacking those bags and finding the soft, gentle horse this guy wants to be!

This may seem like nothing to most, but from what I understand, it’s a big deal for this guy.
Hyde was one of the critters on my list before I even saw him at pickup. However I did not see his name right away when we first went through the barn, because it was covered with a sign stating he “attacks flags”. When he was brought through the round pen, no flags were used and he was moved on the lunge line, whereas everyone else was loose. I thought that was peculiar, as I do use a flag for my groundwork, but when the time came to pick I decided to overlook it. I was told about his past and it was again brought up that he had some baggage around a flag.
But today, that changed. Today I decided to take a chance and see what happened. And how rewarding that was. To see this horse have virtually ZERO reaction to the flag, and see how much trust we’ve built together- incredibly rewarding. I am SO proud of this guy, he tries so hard for me and I absolutely can’t wait to see the horse he will be.

I’m onto a new adventure! 🐴 In case you didn’t know I have started training full time and decided to join the Appalachian Trainer Face Off for the next 100 days! ATFO is an event hosted by a horse rescue out of WV centered around showcasing horses and finding them new homes.
So today I traveled to Winfield, WV to pick up my partner for this competition…. 🥁🥁
Meet Hyde! Hyde is a 9 year old Appendix. I don’t know much about his background yet but I am excited to keep everyone up to date on his progress.
For this process I will be training Hyde for the next 100 days before we attend the 3 day horse show. During this process I will be taking care of Hyde on my own.
