Ribbons are lovely mementos and symbols, but be careful... when you allow ribbons to tell you if you have done a good job, then their absence will try to tell you that it was bad. And that is never the whole story.

Although one mistake can deny you a ribbon, one mistake cannot negate the positive growth, teamwork and joy that exists in every single ride. Always carry your own goals and progress closest to your heart.

By ELIZABETH GIBBS Riding typically begins and ends in the ring. But for Gigi Phillips, the ring has always been just one small aspect of the sport. The 17 year-old rider based out of North Carolina has gained recognition not only for being one of the best junior riders on the circuit, but by puttin...

BY MAX AMAYA Although my ridersā€™ accomplishments in the show ring are important, I never underestimate the value of solid flatwork as the foundation that makes all the pieces come together in competition. At home, we donā€™t spend much time jumping big courses; we save that for the show ring. Inst...

How much weight can a horse carry?

In my experience, a horse can carry an infinite amount.

They can carry the weight of broken hearts, broken homes, and broken bodies. Countless tears sometimes comb their tangled manes. Moments when parents and friends cannot be there to help and hold a person, horses embrace and empower. They carry physical, mental, and emotional handicaps. They carry hopes and dreams; and they will carry the stress from your day when you canā€™t carry it anymore.

They carry graduations, they carry new careers, they carry moves away from everything familiar, they carry marriages, they carry divorces, they carry funerals, they carry babies before they are born, and sometimes they carry the mothers who cannot carry their own baby. They carry mistakes, they carry joy, they carry the good and they carry the bad. They carry drugs and addictions, but they also carry the celebrations.

They will carry you to success when all you have felt is failure. They will carry you, never knowing the weight of your burdens and triumphs.

If you let them, they will carry you through life, and life is hard, life is heavy. But a horse will make you feel weightless under it all.

I love my school horses!!!! I couldnā€™t do it without them!!

They are never just RIDING SCHOOL PONIESā¤ļøšŸ“

One day you may move onto bigger, fancier horses, but never forget the school horse who made you, as without them, you wouldnā€™t be able to ride anything at all.

The patient soul that tolerated your bouncing while you figured out how to sit the trot.

The kind mare that didnā€™t walk off when you stumbled up the mounting block, trying to get your foot in the stirrup.

The sweet gelding that picked up the trot even though your body was telling him to do the exact opposite.

The saintly angel that never spooked, which was a dam good thing because your balance was precarious at best.

Too often we forget where we came from. We move on to the next chapter in our lives and say, ā€œOh my gosh, Iā€™m learning so much! Iā€™m going so far! I could never do this kind of thing on that old school horse!ā€

But infact you could, you were just not ready to do all these things back then.

But that school horse gave you the confidence to move forward. That school horse took care of you in all respects and allowed you to take the time you needed to find your way. You couldnā€™t have become the rider you are today without that riding school horse, always remember to love them unconditionally for our riding school horses are what help start your dream, make dreams come true and get you ready for those bigger dreams šŸ“

"...we must never forget, every time we sit on a horse, what an extraordinary privilege it is: to be able to unite one's body with that of another sentient being, one that is stronger, faster and more agile by far than we are, and at the same time, brave, generous, and uncommonly forgiving." ~ William Steinkraus, Olympic equestrian.

This is very important to read for every level of rider!!!

This is very important to read for every level of rider!!!

9 Facts About Perfectionism: A mindset that must be unlearned or will ultimately bring your riding down šŸ§

1. Every rider makes mistakes, even the best of the best.
Itā€™s an unavoidable, universal experience and all a part of the sport.

2. Mistakes are learning opportunities.
You can grow from them and become better because of them.

3. Hyper-focusing on mistakes helps them happen.
They both become a self-fulfilling prophecy and take your focus away from your ride.

4. Mistakes mean youā€™re on the right track.
You canā€™t improve, learn, overcome challenges, and level up without them.

5. Itā€™s not what happened but how you move forward from it that matters the most.
Moving on from the mistake matters more than the mistake itself.

6. Mistakes are temporary.
Work to fix and put them in the past instead of dwelling and allowing them to stick around.

7. Mistakes donā€™t define you.
You may have had a bad ride, but that doesnā€™t mean youā€™re a bad rider.

8. Social media only shows highlights.
Everyone is struggling whether they post about it or not.

9. Perfect doesnā€™t exist.
Itā€™s impossible to meet unattainable expectations.

A perfectionist mindset and a lack of an ability to accept mistakes will do much more harm than good for an athleteā€™s mental performance. Mistakes are a normal part of sport and life. Everyone makes mistakes no matter how talented of an athlete they may be. Since perfect doesnā€™t exist, holding yourself to an unrealistic standard will only set you up for disappointment every ride. Instead, give yourself permission to make mistakes, using them to your advantage by viewing them as valuable feedback and learning opportunities. Refer to this post whenever you begin to feel hard on yourself, and remember that you are not alone! šŸ‡šŸ½šŸ’āœØ
