We have a litter of Golden Retriever puppies, going home early September. This is a rare opportunity for you to have an incredibly well bred Golden. We breed for diversity and health by using a variety of families of Goldens. We lowered the inbreeding on this litter to a 14% with a father at 21% and mom at 30%. The average Golden is 20%.

In contrast, any pure bred crossed with a different pure bred, Golden x Poodle for example, lowers the inbreeding to 0%-5%. For highly diverse genetics, having multiple varieties of breeds in your dog’s genealogy reaps the best chance of a healthy long life.

We care about health and long life over any other trait. Of course, we are not able to control how genetics work, we can only attempt to do our best. No matter how healthy and diverse the parents are, there is never a guaranty the offspring will all be long lived. But, science has proven that genetic diversity ups the odds in favor of a long healthy life.

Ready for your home! This Cavapoo boy is doing fantastic with his training. He is super on potty outside. He uses a dog door plus goes to the house door to ask to go potty outside. He is chill, quiet, easy and so sweet. He will be only about 15-20 lbs max as an adult. His hair will always stay straight /shaggy so that he looks more like a Cavalier, but with lower shed. DOODLES ARE HEALTHIER THAN “PUREBRED” PARENTS

You know who has REALLY good data on canine health?

Pet insurance companies.

The have big samples, operationalized by breed, age, type of health issue, cost.

And guess what?

Mutts and mixed breeds are mostly HEALTHIER than their pure-bred parents.

Example: Doodles.

Back in 2022 Nationwide Pet Insurance put out a study based on the huge data setx (see >>https://assets.ctfassets.net/440y9b545yd9/2xKSYWnUkxhb0tJGDLNdoI/fe9b401da2d73c6fef7c2a4bd4b8a49e/Nationwide_Oodles_of_Doodles_and_Cancer_Cross_Breed_White_Paper_2022.pdf ):

“As the first part of a larger analysis of the cancer claims of 1.61 million Nationwide®-insured dogs over a six-year period, the leading U.S. pet health insurer reviewed both the popularity of these “designer dogs” as well as their risk for cancer claims relative to the purebreds that make up these crossbreds.
Doodle popularity is up, and Doodle parent breed popularity is down. Poodle crosses increased as a relative share of Nationwide’s pet health insurance policies, while the relative share of the parent breeds fell.

“Doodle owners are considerably less likely to have submitted a claim for cancer diagnosis or treatment. Relative risk for cancer claims is dramatically lower in Labradoodles and Goldendoodles in comparison with their contributing breeds — Standard Poodles, Golden Retrievers, and Labrador Retrievers.”

The Nationwide team found that market economics and public information both seem to be working.

For instance, while Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and various other Poodle crosses were up from 160 to 340 percent, the demand for purebred Standard Poodles, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers declined between 4 and 32 percent.

The market phenomenon seen with pure-breeds and doodles is replicated generally. While the relative percentage of all non-purebreds grew from 2013 to 2021 (by 131 percent for cross-breeds and 45 percent for mixed breeds), purebred dogs insured by Nationwide declined 18.6 percent.

Another bit of good news is that Doodle breeders and pet buyers seems to get it -- closed registries and closed gene pools are THE problem.

“Breeders and pet owners seem satisfied with the offspring of two different parent breeds (often referred to as an “F1” generation) in contrast to breeding Labradoodles with other Labradoodles. This potentially avoids reduction of genetic diversity by ensuring that the breeding pool can be kept wider.”

What about cancer -- the focus of the study?

▪️Goldendoodles are 75.0% less likely to have a claim submitted for cancer, compared with Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles combined.

▪️Labradoodles are 62.0% less likely to have a claim submitted for cancer, compared with Labrador Retrievers and Standard Poodles combined.

▪️Put another way, the combined relative risk for parent breeds of Goldendoodles having submitted a cancer claim is four times that of their crossbred offspring, and for the parent breeds of Labradoodles it is 2.6 times.

▪️When the focus is broadened to look at purebred versus non-purebred dogs, a similar overall trend emerges. When compared with crossbred and mixed-breed dogs, purebreds as a group are almost twice as likely (188.5%) to have submitted a claim for cancer.

Who wants a laid back, gentle, quiet, small, chunky boy puppy?

This is a Cavapoo who we have been training. He is 3 months old and spectacular on his potty training. He is easy to raise and just a delight to spend time with.

His coat will always stay straight and shaggy and will never be curly like a poodle. He really favors a Cavalier more in his stature and temperament.

Both his parents are fully checked out and certified with OFA & DNA. He can not be affected with over 200 diseases that his parents are tested for. And both parents have certificates showing they have healthy: hearts (very important) eyes, hips, knees and overall great health.

This little chunky boy will be about 12-14” tall when grown and 14-18 lbs max.

If you have kids this is a really stable puppy, but due to his small size we do not suggest him for toddlers.

We have 3 little Poodle boys available to go home August 15. We hoped for little girls so we could have more wonderful mommy dogs. We got 3 boys…. Not helpful to us, but this is good news for you. The parents are fully OFA & DNA health tested to insure your puppy is super duper healthy. Moon & Brody the parents both have outstanding personalities! This is why we hoped for girl puppies for us.

We need co-ownership homes for Cavaliers and 1/2 Cavaliers to be part of our breeding program. This unique plan gives every dog a pet home. Later, if the dog qualifies as an adult to be a parent, we borrow the dog to produce babies. The dog is your pet forever, we just need the dog a little bit for new pups.

Safari Doodles has joined friends across the world to improve Cavaliers!

What is the Cavalier Improvement Project?

Cross-breed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels to other breeds that do not share their breed-specific health problems. Then continue to cross these 1/2 Cavaliers to each other for the purpose of recreating Cavaliers with lower health problems.


What are some breed specific Cavalier health concerns that a cross bred Cavalier can avoid?

Why do Cavaliers have so many breed specific health problems?

Cavaliers are highly in**ed since their re-creation about 100 years ago. A small population of spaniels were bred together to re-create a spaniel that looked like the dogs in artwork that were common royalty dogs in the 1600-1700’s. Today all Cavaliers DNA COI shows their genetic makeup is 30% or more in**ed. Most Cavaliers are 35% or higher in**ed. For understanding, the product of full siblings (from unrelated grandparents) is 25% COI. That means all Cavaliers are more in**ed than offspring of full siblings.

Are 1/2 Cavalier dogs healthy?

Yes, if bred correctly the offspring can be very healthy. By crossing a Cavalier to a breed that does not share the Cavalier specific ailments we can greatly improve the health of Cavalier offspring. The parents need detailed DNA health testing to be sure the cross is helping, especially with IVDD/CDDY. The other breed needs to not be known for heart disease, especially MVD. And the other breed needs to have a larger/longer skull shape to take away the SM/CM.

We are taking deposits for this Cavalier cross and others. We are also looking for guardian homes for breeding dogs. And we are open to placing dogs with breeders who are producing dogs for the Cavalier Improvement Project.

🔺 Do you give an oral flea pill to your dog??🔻 We get 1-3 reports a WEEK of dogs with symptoms from taking their oral flea pill. That is a LOT of dogs just for us to hear from. Think how many dog’s cases are not being reported to the FDA. What are the symptoms? It starts with “that’s not normal” behaviors and only gets worse. 💙The effect of puppyhood and adolescent diet on the incidence of chronic enteropathy (CE) in dogs later in life💙

“We found that feeding a non-processed meat-based diet and giving the dog human meal leftovers and table scraps during puppyhood (2–6 months) and adolescence (6–18 months) were protective against CE later in life. Especially raw bones and cartilage as well as leftovers and table scraps during puppyhood and adolescence, and berries during puppyhood were associated with less CE. In contrast, feeding an ultra-processed carbohydrate-based diet, namely dry dog food or “kibble” during puppyhood and adolescence, and rawhides during puppyhood were significant risk factors for later in life.”

These guys have that really nice straight shaggy coat that will keep them looking like their Cavalier King Charles side of the family tree. They are 1/2 mini poodle, so their shedding will be kept to a minimum, but they inherited the Cavalier side in the looks department. 💚

These boys are ready now. They are fantastic on using the dog door to potty outside. They are very social and loving. Just like a Cavalier, these Cavapoo guys are laid back and easy to live with.
