Had a great day working on show steers. This steer had interdigital corns in all 4 feet. It took a little effort getting him into the chute. Once we got him up, these 4H students went to work getting him disinfected and assisting with corn removal. Up against time with heat and bloat concerns, the three of us got all 4 feet treated and bandaged. With antiinflammatory medication on board, this guy will be ready for the next show in a couple of weeks.

Some female pigs have hard heat cycles, which can make them aggressive toward people and other animals. We decided to eliminate this by spaying this little kune and her sister. The ladies at successfully placed an intravenous catheter on an ear to establish venous access if needed. She did great under gas anesthesia for a complete ovariohysterectomy. Recovery was smooth and uneventful. Her sister's spay is this Friday with the intent to eliminate all barnyard crankiness.

Thanks to Bear Creek Animal Clinic, we were fortunate to use their operating room and gas anesthesia to remove both testicles that were abdominally retained. Otherwise known as a bilateral intra-abdominal cryptorchid. Both testicles were removed from this piggy and recovery was very smooth. A long lasting antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication will get this guy closer to his 4-H student.

Does it seem like your horse is constantly colicy, "cinchey," weight loss issues, difficulty gaining weight, dull hair coat, or grumpy? If your answer is yes or maybe a little, then your horse may be experiencing equine gastric ulcer syndrome. Even if your horse does not display these signs does not mean they don't have gastric ulcers because it is understood that up to 2 out of 3 horses have some level of gastric ulcers. Yes, there are variations among breeds and use of the horses. Gastric endoscopy enables us to identify type and severity of the stomach lesions, which facilitates our approach for treatment and prevention. Below is an image we captured of stomach bots during a scoping procedure. Call or text me if you are concerned about equine gastric ulcer syndrome.

Interdigital hyperplasia, otherwise know as a corn, occur due to constant stretching of the claw, ligaments and skin. Exposure to wet environments perpetuates the condition. When non weight bearing, the skin tends to fold outward and scar tissue forms. They can become infected and painful.

We got this big Hereford bull up on his side and prepped him with a regional limb perfusion that had antibiotics and local anesthesia. The corn was surgically removed, wrapped with an antibiotic powder, and hooves were wired together to prevent stretching. We added pain medication to put a bow on it and he didn't miss a step.

Hoof cracks are common and painful. They typically occur when cattle are in constant wet conditions. Wet conditions expand the hooves making them "soft." The soft hoof becomes more penetrable allowing dirt, mud, and manure to pack and expand to create a crack and hoof rot. To treat this, we have to pick them up and tilt them on their side, Dremel each crack to remove debris and infection. Some hooves require a block on the non painful hoof to get the painful hoof off the ground. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication are used to finish the job. It takes time, but they do really well.

We had signs like this in clinics too. They may be big and lazy most of the time; but they can move FAST when they want.

Have you been waiting longer than usual for an open appointment with your veterinarian or been unable to access after-hours services for your horse? The shortage of equine veterinarians in the U.S. is likely the cause. Many veterinary practices have too few horse doctors to service all their clients.

Why? Only about 6% of new veterinary graduates annually enter equine practice. After five years, 50% of these young veterinarians leave for small animal practice or quit veterinary medicine altogether. The primary reasons are the personal demands of the profession and equine practice’s lower starting salaries. Many new veterinarians begin their career with more than $200,000 in student loan debt, making an equine position with lower compensation often unthinkable. When financial concerns are combined with the always present demands of emergency coverage, many equine veterinarians choose to leave for a healthier way of life.

The good news is that the AAEP along with private veterinary practices and veterinary schools are addressing the pain points which have led to the current crisis. But the solution is complex and will require the support and collaboration of every person in the equine industry — including horse owners. As we work to improve the profession for current and future veterinarians, you have a huge role to play in the much-needed transformation of equine practice. Horse doctors look forward to working together with you for the good of the horse and the sustainability of veterinary care!

Every once in a while the veterinary gods throw you a bone. This old show sow had a crack in her hoof. At approximately 800 pounds, the amount of sedation required would have been substantial. Instead we went with food and belly rubs to get the crack repaired. Foot soaks, antibiotics, and antiinflammatory medication has this old lady on the med.

Lets start off this week on a good note. Last winter there was an accident involving heavy snow and a barn collapsing on some stallions. This guy got pinned creating multiple wounds and necrotic tissue. The necrotic tissue was debrided. The owners did a great job cleaning and dressing the wound twice daily to aid the healing via second intention. These wounds take time, but remember that livestock are forgiving animals.

While many residents fleeing Ukraine are trying to take their pets and animals with them, thousands of displaced horses, donkeys, burros and other animals remain behind and, like the people of Ukraine, need your help.

The Foundation for the Horse, the AAEP's charitable arm, will be donating all disaster gifts received in March 2022 to trusted veterinary and equine organizations it identifies in Europe providing emergency relief to horses and animals in impacted areas with the capabilities to provide care on the ground.
