Our Story
Carnes Garden is right across the street from Carnes Elementary School which is located at the southeast corner of J W Williams Avenue and Ayers Street just north of the medical center. We call this garden a teaching garden because of the connection to the environmental science curriculum at Carnes Elementary School. We have already put in many plants that are native to this area and flowering plants that are attractive to butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Carnes Garden will be a varied and balanced environment where lessons about science in the classrooms and textbooks can come alive for the students at Carnes Elementary. It will be a beautiful place too where students, teachers, parents, neighbors and volunteers will enjoy being together We started Carnes Garden with funds from a successful project through ioby “in our back yards.” It is only happening because of the generosity of our many donors. Much of our success is because of support from St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Since we began Carnes Garden our partners, supporters and volunteers have grown tremendously. We are thankful for the support of the people of Carnes neighborhood, Clean Memphis, Memphis City Beautiful continues to be a great help with volunteers, tools, gloves and water. Our many other partners include Memphis Medical District Collaborative, Community Redevelopment Agency, Compost Fairy, West TN Urban Forestry Council, Memphis Tilth and many other organizations and individuals. The children of Carnes Elementary helped us put in good soil, plants and water to help them grow. The enthusiasm they showed when they came to help us reminds us of why Carnes Garden is such an important place. While the school was closed a couple of years ago, we are optimistic that another school or neighborhood supporting use will want to locate there in the near future. The purpose of this page is to tie together the partners, volunteers, school supporters and everyone else involved with Carnes Garden. Here we can share our images from past and future events and our ideas for the future.
