This suffering could have been prevented. 💔

Pictured is one of our HERO Outreach Team's clients. Our team first visited his home in March, where he was tangled in his tether and pitifully thin. Within a few weeks of our providing dewormer, food, and solutions to his tangling, we were excited to see progress in his quality of life.

Unfortunately, this progress was short-lived. During our most recent visit this poor pup was hot, stressed, and covered in painful biting flies. The SWAT ointment we provided to prevent the fly strike that now plagues him has never been applied. Bound to a tether, he has been forced to suffer.

Stories like these are just one of many similar situations our HERO Team encounters on a daily basis. We have engaged animal control for this case, and are partnering together to ensure that he never has to suffer like this again.

Our mini Cowardly Lion has finally drummed up the courage to find his forever home! 🦁💕

Left To Die from injuries caused by an Embedded Chain. 💔

This is how we found Dunbar, a four-month-old puppy who had made his home in an old tire on the side of the road. Next to him were a crate, an empty bag of pet food, and no one in sight to claim this sweet soul.

Across his neck are deep wounds from a heavy chain, and you can see where each individual link lay on his skin. Coupled with severe fly strike, who knows how long Dunbar was left to suffer before we found him.

🧡💙 Alumni Update - TYLER 💙🧡

Tyler first began his rescue journey with Angel Hearts Rescue Inc., previously living in a camp of unhoused individuals before it was decided that bringing him to a shelter was in his best interest. Once he joined the GPSPCA crew, he waited a little less than a month to find his perfect forever family. 🐾

From the adopter:
"We decided to rename Tyler as Bruno and it could not be a better fit. The first couple days he was very social and did a lot of exploring, then he started hiding under the bed for a few days after that. He's now incredibly social and seems VERY comfortable and happy in his new home! He has this ADORABLE habit of tucking himself under the sheets all by himself before taking a nap (I've never seen a cat do that before). He loves cheek scratches and sleeping at the foot of the bed at night. Overall we could not be happier with our decision to adopt him and are so glad he's making himself at home! 🥰"

Vince arrived at Great Plains SPCA with extensive, infected wounds on his hind legs. We are seeing amazing progress in his recovery, and Vince is currently in a foster home where he can continue to rest and heal. ❗❗ Bull Terrier Afflicted with Necrotic Lesions ❗❗

On May 23rd, Roger was found roaming a local park with a multitude of skin lesions. To our horror, these lesions got dramatically worse in the span of a few days. Some wounds began to turn necrotic, causing portions of his skin to peel off.

Our Shelter Medicine Team has put every plan in place to give Roger a fighting chance. Biopsies revealed five different strains of bacteria contaminating his wounds, and we've started Roger on a targeted concoction of antibiotics to fight them off. Coupled with steroids and pain medication, we are slowly beginning to see improvement. With further top-quality care, we are hopeful that Roger will make a full recovery.

🚨🐾 URGENT HEAT ADVISORY: Help our HERO Team advocate for animals in danger.

Starting tomorrow, temperatures in the Kansas City area will soar above 90 degrees. It is critically important to remember that pets are vulnerable to extreme heat, just like us.

Our HERO Outreach Team is currently out in the community helping animals exposed to these deadly temperatures. Providing sun sails, cool water, and fly repellent to prevent the excruciatingly painful condition known as fly strike. Where flying insects lay eggs on their "host," allowing maggots to eat away at the flesh.

It's been (500) Days of BUMMER for our longest-term shelter pet, Lucas. 💔😔

Today marks Lucas' 500th day at Great Plains SPCA. He is understandably heartbroken, but we are sure that his true love is out there somewhere. 🐾 Lucas is four-years-old, housebroken, crate-trained, wonderful on leash, and loves to snuggle. All he needs is a home as the only pet, where he can be the center of your world!

🧡💙 Alumni Update - JOVIE 💙🧡

This partially blind puppy's story began when her previous owner was attempting to rehome her at a corner store. She smart, silly, spunky, and we knew that despite her vision impairment, she was ready to take on the world. 🐾

From the adopter:
"In short, she is the best little pup we could have asked for!

She's incredibly smart, and doesn't let her limited eyesight slow her down. She understands some basic commands. She is showing signs of understanding her routine, for example she goes into her crate of her own accord at night. She's also doing very well with house training, only a few sporadic accidents so far. Most importantly, she LOVES exploring our big backyard (a completely fenced in one-third acre), and when she comes back inside, tired from playing so hard, she is very snuggly and sweet - a total lap dog!

She's also great with other dogs, eager to play but quick to learn and respect another dog's boundaries. Pictured here resting with her bestie after a long morning of play in the yard 🙂

As expected, she and the cat have kept to their respective floors in the house, Eleanor on the main level and the cat upstairs. They have seen and smelled one another and for now are keeping their distance, which is fine as they both seem to be thriving."

💔 12 Puppies Abandoned in a Chest on Side of the Highway 💔

Twelve puppies, barely old enough to eat solid food, were found trapped in a wooden chest on the side of the road. With the lid closed, high humidity, and temperatures beginning to soar with summer heat, their situation could have easily become critical. Thankfully, a good Samaritan noticed something was off and stopped to check the contents of the container. Without their vigilance, these puppies would have been left to die from heat exhaustion or starvation.

All twelve are now receiving around-the-clock care with our fosters. We are not sure what circumstances led to their abandonment, but we will make sure that they receive nothing but the best care and love. 💙🧡

Siri's Doggy-Day-Out with Black & Veatch! 💙🐶

Our adoptable Siri girl was described as "sweet, quiet, and calm" during her break from the shelter. Walking well on leash, bravely using the elevator, and giving everyone she met kisses. 💕 RUN, don't walk to our shelter and ADOPT sweet Siri!

A HUGE thank you to Black & Veatch for providing our shelter pets with an outing to decompress from kennel stress. Each dog they host comes back to us happy, tired, and ready to find their forever home. We are incredibly grateful that our animals have this amazing opportunity. 🥰

Another community pet successfully spayed! 🎉🐶

Our HERO Outreach Team has been making steady progress in the Kansas City metro. Reaching out to families in need of resources and offering spay/neuter services whenever we can. Sheila (pictured) is just one of the pups altered at Great Plains SPCA, and she is now happily living life with her owners. Never again needing to worry about the complications of childbirth or contributing to the overpopulation crisis. 🐾

By taking small steps like this, we are able to spread the word about humane pet ownership and the current state of animal welfare. We wish this happy family the best and will continue to stop by in case they ever need our help. 💕
