The Perfect Hand Stack

The perfect hand stack should look like the dog looks when he or she absolutely nails a free stack. It might be in the show ring, or in your back yard, but if your dog is properly built his free stack will be his best stack. If your dog has a structural flaw, you may need to hand stack him in a way to camouflage that flaw.

Before we proceed, it should be noted that there is no perfect order when stacking your dog. We prefer to walk the dog into a stand or place the dog on the front of the table, then if all legs need to be repositioned we would suggest, front leg judge's side, front leg handler's side, back leg judge's side, back leg handler's side, then present, meaning head and tail in position for perfect presentation. That said, you should stack your dog however you can best do so quickly, efficiently and properly,

Here are the pieces that we feel are important to a solid hand stack:

1. The front legs should come straight down

2. The hock (technically called the metatarsus but in dog's we commonly refer to it as the hock) is perpendicular to the ground

3. The distance from front legs to back legs is correct

4. The dog's head is held at the proper position

5. The dog's tail is held in the proper position

6. The dog's weight distribution is slightly forward

These elements are necessary for a proper hand stack.

Charm won’t be with me much longer. She has kidney stones and had to spend a few days in the hospital in December. She seems like her old self at times but her days with us is growing short. I took her to the vet on Monday and took these photos in the car. She is 15 yo.

Enjoying a day outing. Tamiko and Abby had fun meeting each other.

Chewing is ALWAYS fun... Mom said, no plastics, vinyl floor coverings, wee pads,....have one of these instead. Always supervised and removed before it gets too small.
