Freddy's heart-shaoed nose makes him the perfect patient to feature on Valentine's Day!

Freddy came to see us today due to a traumatic malocclusion, where his lower canine teeth don't fit properly in front of his upper canines, and are poking into his gums and palate! He'll be back in a couple of weeks for his procedure to remove the pointy tips of those lower canines and make him more comfortable.

It's always an honor to work with the dedicated and talented staff at the Oakland Zoo. Last week it was extra special watching the cardiac team from UCSF perform an echocardiogram while we gave Eddie Chimpanzee an oral health exam.

Happy National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week! Our technicians Ophelie, RVT, Renee and Emilie give our patients lots of love while also providing exceptional nursing care. They assist the doctors during exams, collect blood and order lab tests, place catheters, obtain dental x-rays and CT scans, perform dental cleanings, clean and sterilize instruments, and most importantly, monitor anesthesia and recovery. We appreciate them for all that they do and for embodying our practice's core values (HEART): we are Helpful, Exceptional, Adaptable, Respectful and Trustworthy ❤️ Thank you, Ophelie, Renee and Emilie!

Sometimes you don’t know until you know! Milo came in for his annual exam and we noticed some discoloration at his lower left canine. Discoloration can mean a dead tooth, or pulpitis…or, in Milo’s case today, nothing at all. Swipe to see the tooth in question, and the CT image.

Curious Kona likes to bring her parents rocks to play fetch with—ouch! Here you can see the way this has worn her canine and premolar teeth. Luckily she didn’t wear them down to the point of exposing the pulp, but her parents are getting her a muzzle to avoid this behavior in the future.

If you love your veterinarian, thank a ! Our experienced technicians at AADC perform patient intake, collect and process blood samples, place IV catheters, administer and monitor anesthesia, provide nursing care, take x-rays, acquire cone-beam CT scans, sterilize instruments, and assist in surgery. The patients they care for range in size from kittens under 2 lbs to lions over 500 lbs. They are the backbone of our practice and we are so to have Alli and RVTs Ashley, Bridgit and Ophelie as teammates!

This is Maverick. Maverick is a puppy, so why is he at AADC?
Maverick has an oral tumor called an Acanthomatus Ameloblastoma. This is a benign, but aggressive tumor. In the short time between discovery, diagnosis and surgery the tumor grew significantly. On Tuesday, Dr Fulton successfully removed the mass along with the teeth and bone surrounding it. Maverick has a great prognosis for not having any recurrence of the tumor. He will soon be able to go back to just being a puppy. The sequence of photos show Maverick’s tumor, the removal and Maverick post-op.
