Happy sustainability Sunday!
Featuring our groundhogs Lilly and Elliott ❀️❀️
Groundhogs, aka woodchucks, have a special role in our ecosystem!
Here are a few ways groundhogs benefit the environment:

🌳 Soil Aeration- these guys are big diggers, as many people have found out in the garden. When ruffling up the soil, groundhogs aerate the soil which improves water absorption.

🌱 Planters- Groundhogs love eating nuts and seeds. They disperse seeds on the ground that grow into trees and native plants.

🏠 Little engineers- Groundhogs can dig burrows as deep as 5 feet and as long as 30 feet! Humans have studies groundhog burrows for their construction marvels. Empty burrows and then provide a home for other wildlife.

πŸ”„ Foodweb- As prey animals, groundhogs can be a food source for predators and support biodiversity.

πŸ›οΈπŸ’€ Fun fact! Groundhogs hibernate from Oct to Feb. Despite their chubby shape, they can climb and swim.

πŸŒ³πŸΌπŸ’– Meet the growing fur babies of Momma's family! 24-141, 24-142, 24-143 are thriving and stronger every day! We've also welcomed a new brother, 24-194, affectionately named Jimmi, into their circle. πŸ“Έβœ¨

Momma's kids were born on July 15th at 4:44 PM via c-section, a day full of emotions and miraculous beginnings. Just a week later, we faced the heartbreak of losing one of the little boys for reasons unknown. And last Saturday, with heavy hearts, we said goodbye to our brave Momma, who joined her little boy in the big Oak tree in the sky. 🌳🌈

We made a promise to Momma to continue her hard work and raise these little ones to reach the tree's. Adding Jimmi to the family feels just right as we honor the spirit of the original quad. πŸ’ž We know Momma would be proud of her flourishing babies and the love that binds them together.

Every morning, Elliott checks on Lilly. She’s usually up first but then sneaks back to bed for a little nap. πŸ’€ Once Elliott gets through his morning routine, he arrives at Lilly's cage with excitement.

Groundhogs play like puppies with endless squeaks and squeals, their playfulness filling the room. 🐾 It’s a daily ritual until Lilly decides she’s had enough and gently lets Elliott know β€” she's quite good at expressing her feelings!

Seeing Elliott so happy brings such joy. 😊 Watching them seek each other out and share these moments... well, let's just say, it's sometimes challenging to concentrate on anything else!

πŸ“Έβœ¨ Yesterday, we shared the story of 24-195, Warwick.

As you can see, one baby is eerily pastey whitish (24-195) while the other looks great(24-163). Warwick was in such a questionable state that our rehabilitator immediately placed her with a similar-sized baby. The stronger one was quick to go over and cuddle Warwick, offering warmth and comfort. Baby 24-163 now has a friend and BOTH are doing great.πŸ’ž

This heartwarming moment is why we create these little families... everyone needs a BFF when heading out into the big, bad wild world. πŸŒΏπŸ’š

🌟🐾 24-195 from our friends at Warwick Run Animal Clinic had quite the adventure! 🚨🐿 After the storm, she was found covered in mud and leaf bits, dropped off in a box with the instruction to "deal with it." And that's exactly what they did! πŸ’ͺ🏽❀️

Upon seeing her, the staff quickly realized how critical her condition was. These little ones can't regulate their body heat when they’re still pink, leaving her dangerously cold and at risk of pneumonia from aspiration and exposure. πŸ₯ΆπŸ’” Thanks to their quick thinking and the advice from our founder, she was transported to us ASAP, warming on a bag of fluids, and has since responded well to antibiotics.πŸŒ‘οΈπŸ’Š

We know how short-handed our veterinary partners are these days, so we deeply appreciate their swift response to this tiny girl’s unique needs. In honor of their dedication and care, we've named her "Warwick." 🌟πŸ₯πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

🐿️✨ Meet Andrew, our little superstar 🌟 (squirrel #24-192), hailing all the way from Chambersburg! 😍 This cutie is finally getting his furs, and believe us when we say, boy can he eat! πŸ½οΈπŸ˜‹

During his rehab with us, Andrew will need to be fed formula over 250 times. That sounds like a lot, right? Well, imagine thisβ€”multiply that by 40 squirrels, and we end up with a whopping 10,000 feedings! 😱

Our sanctuary, Acorn Acres, is proud to be the only facility in the state that specializes in the rehabilitation of all squirrel species. 🏑🐿️ We work tirelessly to ensure these babies grow up healthy and strong.

But here's the scoop: Feeding these baby squirrels is no small feat. A 1lb bag of formula powder, which costs about $25, can feed 3 squirrels with their eyes open for about 10 days. 🍼πŸ’ͺ

We NEED your help to keep Andrew and his friends well-fed and thriving. 🌱 Every little bit counts, so please consider donating to help us buy the formula needed for all the babies our community members have entrusted to us. β€οΈπŸ™Œ

🐿️✨ It all started back in the winter of 2021 when our founder reached out to part-time naturalist Carter at Lancaster County Parks to collaborate on a Groundhog education event featuring our beloved Poppy the Groundhog. Today, we are thrilled to share an exciting update about this special connection!

Carter has since become a Naturalist at York County Parks, and over the years, he and Betsy have continued to work together on various projects. Carter is not only a dedicated naturalist but also a loyal supporter of Acorn Acres. Some of you might remember him from our Groundhog Day Party this past February!

Well, today, Carter reached out for a whole new reason... a baby squirrel! 🍼🐿️ A gentleman at the park witnessed a hawk attack a nest, carrying away the mom as the nest fell to the ground, releasing a tiny 2.5-week-old squirrel. The kind man brought the baby to the Nature Center, seeking help.

Carter immediately thought of us, and in less than an hour, little 24-197 "Nixon" was in our care. We're grateful for the support of our community and the special bonds we've built over the years. πŸ’šπŸŒ³

🌟 Baby 24-193 is one lucky little squirrel! 🌟

Last weekend we received two urgent calls about a baby squirrel at a campground. During baby season, this isn't uncommon, but this story has a twist that shows off the amazing community we have! πŸΏοΈπŸ’•

After confirming that the baby needed rehabilitation, we asked the first caller to bring the squirrel in for rehab. Fast forward an hour and the second caller, completely distraught, reported the baby was gone, but sadly found two deceased siblings. The situation became more desperate... πŸ˜’πŸ’”

But here's the twist: Our founder noticed some oddly similar details in the callers' stories and asked a few pointed questions. It turned out TWO completely unrelated callers were attempting to help the SAME squirrel! Both were equally distraught, and both were dedicated to keeping the little one warm and safe. πŸŒπŸ’–

It's stories like this that remind us how truly small our world is and what a wonderful community we have. Thank you to everyone who cares so deeply. You've given baby 24-193 a fighting chance! πŸ™

🐿️ Attention, Nature Lovers! 🌧️🌞 Help Baby Squirrels in Need! 🌳❀️

With our current and upcoming weather changes, baby squirrels are at risk and need YOUR help more than ever. Our wildlife rescue is at full capacity, and we're calling on our amazing community to help us reunite these little ones with their moms.

If you find a baby squirrel:

1️⃣ Do not panic! Collect the baby carefully.
2️⃣ Keep the baby warm next to a heat source. This will make the difference between life and death. Body temp of squirrels is 100 degrees. DO NOT FEED ANYTHING, PLEASE!
3️⃣ Monitor closely for signs of injury or distress.
4️⃣ Follow the steps listed on our infographics to reunite (squirrels are fantastic moms and they want their babies back)
5️⃣ Contact your local wildlife rescue ASAP!

Every share makes a difference! Help spread the word to ensure these precious lives get the care they need. 🌎✨

🚨 We need more volunteers and donations! If you're interested in helping, please DM us for details.

πŸ™ Thank you for your support and compassion!

Let's get these furry friends back to their homes! 🏑🐿️❀️

Land conversion is the number one reason for habitat loss. It's also a common reason rehabilitation is necessary for wildlife.

I’m only 22, but I’ve seen Lancaster County grow and change so much as I grew up here. There are many more housing developments, highways, and shopping malls that have replaced previous green spaces. As the population and its demand grow, more forest habitats are converted into urban areas. These areas may include where we work, live, eat, and shop, and are essential for our daily lives. While land conversion can create convenience for us, it can replace the homes of wildlife and create dangerous environments.

How can we meet our own needs without severely compromising the needs of another? We must meet present needs without compromising a sustainable future. The answer lies in sustainable development and a sustainable urban planning perspective. Sustainable development includes the consideration of long-term social, economic, and environmental impacts in planning.

Here are a few examples of habitat restoration in developing areas:

πŸŒ‰ **Animal bridges** - (pictured) Allow animals to cross over highways safely.

🌳 **Animal corridors** - Provide safe travel paths for wildlife with tree coverage and food sources.

🌱 **Plant life** - Tree coverage is incredibly important for animals and native plants.

πŸš›πŸ’• Look who rolled into town! Our favorite trucking buddy, Jack, surprised us with an adorable new passenger - a baby squirrel! 🐿️❀️

Recently, a post made the rounds on FB about someone needing help with baby squirrels. Andrew, the kind-hearted finder, couldn’t transport them, and sadly, one had already passed away. 😒 But Jack saw the plea, reached out to our Founder, and took it upon himself to meet Andrew and bring the surviving baby squirrel to us.

Yesterday afternoon, Jack arrived with this tiny 17-gram pinkie, all warm and snuggly in his transport bin. Although we don't typically name our wildlife patients, Jack requested we name this one Andrew, after the thoughtful guy who found him and kept him safe overnight. 🌟

Stories like these and the incredible acts of kindness from our community continue to warm our hearts. πŸ’– Together, we're making a difference, one small creature at a time.

Second season babies are pouring through our doors. πŸ°πŸ¦‰πŸ£

Please help us help our native wildlife:

🏷️ Leash your dogs
🏷️ Protect or cover bunny nests from both cats and dogs
🏷️ DO NOT EVER relocate a rabbit nest

We’re doing our very best to keep our doors open, but we are reaching capacity quickly. πŸ’”

If you're inclined to help, here are some options:

πŸ›’ Purchase from our wish list: we are running low on detergent, bleach, and isopropyl alcohol
πŸ’° Monetary donation

πŸ“° Newspapers with glossy inserts removed

Every little bit helps! Thank you for supporting our wildlife family. πŸŒ±πŸ’š

πŸ—žοΈπŸ“’ ***Urgent Call to Action: We Need Newspapers!*** πŸ“’πŸ—žοΈ

Well, after all this time we find ourselves in dire need of newspapers (all glossy inserts removed). πŸ“„πŸ› οΈ For the past 3 years, we've been incredibly fortunate to use donated mechanic papers (those floor liners placed in your car while at the shop). Thanks to an amazing donation of 10,000 papers, we've been covered... until now. πŸ™

This morning, we used the last of our stash. If you have any newspapers to spare, please DM us to arrange for a contactless drop-off. Your contribution can make a huge difference! ❀️

We are also actively seeking a local business willing to place a paper collection bin at their location for us. If you know anyone who might help with this, or if your business is interested, please reach out. 🌟

🌟✨ Today is a very special day for me! ✨🌟

Two years ago today, while at Red Creek Wildlife Center, I met a very special person. I had to say goodbye to my friends at Red Creek, but my new person became my handler and mom. She took me to the doctor, she gave me my daily medicine injections for six weeks, and she even gave me a big sister to show me how to be an ambassador. πŸ₯πŸ’‰β€οΈ

🐾 Meet 24-141, one of our precious C-section babies! 🍼 She was born at 4:44 PM on July 15th and weighed in at a tiny 10 grams. Now, at 15 days old, she’s thriving! Growing her fur coat and whiskers, her bottom teeth are starting to peek through, and she now weighs a healthy 27 grams! 😍

Her 2 remaining brothers are doing just as wonderfully! It’s been a whirlwind πŸ€ͺ with these little champs, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Big kudos to Momma too, who’s gaining more movement in her legs every day. We’re all rooting for her as she continues her therapy. πŸ’ͺ❀️
