This garden would not have been possible without the help of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Groundwork Milwaukee, Milwaukee County UW-Extension, and UW-Extension Community Gardens & Micro-Farms. A HUGE thank you to these community partners who believe that #greenspace can make a difference in our communities.

Moody Park Community Garden Harvest Festival
On Thursday, September 8th, dozens of gardeners and residents gathered to celebrate Moody Park Community Garden’s 2016 growing season with a Harvest Festival. The evening’s festivities include yard games, grilled food, and a cooking demonstration done by Sarah Faust of the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program - Milwaukee County.
Children and residents got to walk through the community garden and take in the bounty of their hard work over the course of the last three months. Wisconsin Master Gardener Program volunteer, Joanna Beamon attended and responded to other gardeners’ questions, helping them better understand the best time to harvest ripe produce. The cooking demonstration showed the residents and gardeners how they can make a deliciously fresh homemade salsa and summer squash slaw with ingredients straight from their garden.
The Harvest Festival was done in partnership between Milwaukee’s COA Youth and Family Center and
Milwaukee County UW-Extension's The SEED Initiative. Since June 17th when the garden beds were first constructed, the garden has flourished, bringing with it a beautiful place for residents and students to gather and build community.

Moody Park Community Garden Build Day
On June 17th, residents and community partners gathered to build a community garden at Moody Park in the Amani neighborhood on Milwaukee’s north side.
This garden is the fifth of seven community gardens being developed through the Milwaukee County UW-Extension's The SEED Initiative, in an effort to increase access to fresh and affordable food. The SEED Initiative also aims to cultivate knowledge through gardening and healthy eating workshops taught by partner organizations and the Wisconsin Master Gardener Program volunteers.
Thanks to each of the invaluable organizational partners who helped us create this garden! COA Youth & Family Centers, Bean Head Farm, Dominican Center for Women, Inc. and Amani United.

Cupertino Community Garden Build Day
On May 26th and 28th a dozen volunteers helped bring the Cupertino Community Garden to life. With the help of County Supervisor Marina Dimitrijevic ,The SEED Initiative has been working to bring 25 raised beds to the corner of South Shore Drive and Ontario Street since early 2016. The Cupertino Community Garden is the one of several gardens the SEED Initiative is developing to bring healthy and accessible food to the surrounding community.
Of the volunteers who lent a hand building and filling the beds, several were from the Garden Leadership Team, a group of Bay View, Milwaukee residents who will also be renting the plots to grow and harvest their own vegetables. The Milwaukee Urban Gardeners (MUG), a program of Groundwork Milwaukee, were another major player in getting the community garden off the ground. Antoine C Carter headed up the volunteers from MUG, bringing with him a gamut of donated materials from Bliffert Lumber & Hardware to aid in building the beds.
All 25 garden plots have already been rented out by Bay View residents. Of the 25 beds built, 5 are designed to be accessible to residents with physical disabilities. Sam Odin, our SEED Initiative assistant here at UW-Extension Community Gardens & Micro-Farms stated, “I am looking forward to seeing how the residents surrounding Cupertino Park adapt to this new garden in their backyard, and how they grow alongside it this summer. I’m excited to watch that process unfold, watch them learn, and to see it work.”
