The SEED Initiative

The SEED Initiative SEED stands for Sowing, Empowering, and Eliminating Food Deserts. This initiative is bringing community gardening to Milwaukee's most under served areas.

Sowing, Empowering, and Eliminating Food Desserts (SEED) initiative is a resolution passed by the Milwaukee County government to provide funding to create one million square feet of new community garden space in 2016. The goal is to educate, empower and equip Milwaukee County residents to successfully receive access to healthy food in their communities.

The holiday spirit swept 30+ Clarke Square residents and children from Journey House to a Christmas tree farm in the countryside of Grafton with over 10,000 trees. The lively group selected a grand tree to light up Clarke Square and 4 lucky families were chosen to receive free holiday trees to decorate their homes. Only 1 of the residents had previously visited a Christmas tree farm in their lives.

A great community garden is one that grows relationships, nurtures the mind, and heals the body.
A nice article in light of the garden becoming a finalist for a Award. Possibilities are infinite when dedicated organizations like Journey House, Milwaukee County UW-Extension, and Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative unite to foremost engage residents in cultivating welcome and vibrancy within once-dreaded spaces.

Two women, once strangers, share a poem and artwork inspired by the beauty of flowers and vegetables at Milwaukee County UW-Extension's Kohl Farm - Wisconsin's largest community garden. As the music trio plays interpretively to these works of art, the audience snacks on a meal made from garden ingredients during a cooking demonstration.

We're excited for MCW Community Engagement to embrace ways of supporting these types of healthy and creative events in the Milwaukee community.

A HUGE thank you to these community partners who believe that can make a difference in our communities.

A FABULOUS article in the Milwaukee Independent on working to decrease .

"When you begin to look at the health disparities within the city of Milwaukee, I would say that it is a necessity for us to invest in urban gardening, educate others on urban gardening, and truly make sure that it flourishes in our communities,” said [Milele] Coggs. “Because it’s a matter not just of our quality of life in general, but whether we live or die.”

Our thoughts exactly. Click below to read on!

On Thursday, September 8th, dozens of gardeners and residents gathered to celebrate Moody Park Community Garden’s 2016 growing season with a Harvest Festival. The evening’s festivities include yard games, grilled food, and a cooking demonstration done by Sarah Faust of the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program - Milwaukee County.

Children and residents got to walk through the community garden and take in the bounty of their hard work over the course of the last three months. Wisconsin Master Gardener Program volunteer, Joanna Beamon attended and responded to other gardeners’ questions, helping them better understand the best time to harvest ripe produce. The cooking demonstration showed the residents and gardeners how they can make a deliciously fresh homemade salsa and summer squash slaw with ingredients straight from their garden.

The Harvest Festival was done in partnership between Milwaukee’s COA Youth and Family Center and
Milwaukee County UW-Extension's The SEED Initiative. Since June 17th when the garden beds were first constructed, the garden has flourished, bringing with it a beautiful place for residents and students to gather and build community.
