After the last few folks that couldn’t make it over the weekend picked up their plants this morning, all we have left is empty benches and flats THANK YOU for the most successful tomato sale we’ve done yet- lots of familiar faces and many new ones too! Thank you for trusting your gardens beginnings on our work and we look forward to seeing y’all again in the spring! Keep your eyes peeled for a few more annual veg focused sales over the fall into winter. Thank you!

There was some concern that we sold out of bulb onion preorders, we have in fact not put them up yet. Once we have a good idea of germination rate, we will open up preorders for typical 50 plant bundles. Also if you’re local and want to buy full 200 cell flats, we will be able to meet those needs as well, as we are no longer going to rely on subpar out of state starts so increasing volume will be a non issue. ‘Awahia’, ‘1015 Supersweet’ and ‘TX Early White’ will be the varieties this year.

Couple quick seasonal item updates: Strawberries and l’itoi onions sold out over the weekend, as well as around 65% of our garlic seed. We cleaned up and reposted the last round of Finley starts so there’s a few more available if you missed them (reminder we usually post these beginning of June after they’re dormant). So, if you want to get in on this “infinite food hack” 😆 we can still help you get started! https://practicalplantsfl.com/products/inchelium-red-seed-garlic-1-4lb

Morning! Couple things- Debbie was mild for us but still managed to cause a little havoc and dropped a rather large pine branch right in the middle of our sales nursery, crushed a lot of pots and pulled down our power and cable lines- we’re mostly cleaned up but have a lot of plants to repot due to being crushed and we still have a loose cable wire running through here. Duke got the power line up fast but the cable co is dragging their feet. Taking Saturday off to finish cleaning up - if there’s anything you want to pick up just message us and we can pull your order asap. Also! Garlic and strawberry bare root pre-order will be going up in the next few days. Also look out for our fall tomato plant sale announcement and sale date. In September we will have onion starts up for presale (own grown, after last year NO MORE DIXONDALE!). Fall planting season is just around the corner and we’re excited to be your gardens source for great plant starts.

Here’s the list for the weekend, not a whole lot new plants BUT our dormant perennial onion starts are ready to go, and they’ll be put up on the site today or tomorrow for those not in our immediate area. New and in somewhat limited amounts this year is ‘I’itoi’ a desert southwest type that’s slightly smaller than ‘Finley’ but readily bunches the same, we were really impressed by these this year. Dry skins are a red/pink color so are readily differentiated from ‘Finley’. These should not be planted now but in September. Also speaking of the fall, if you want to grow your own 🎃 for Halloween or Thanksgiving decorating in a couple weeks we will have seedlings of the mega hardy ‘Georgia Bulldog’ pumpkin- sound strange to start many curcubits in the summer but if you want DIY fall decorations early July is the time to start!

Here’s the list for the weekend, the turmerics are finally popping out of dormancy so there’s 2 types- BKK, a Thai type that’s very high in curcumins and is considered medicinal, and our stalwart orange culinary type we’ve been growing over 15 years. Also some new small size rare fruit tree seedlings, if you’ve got more time than money this is a good way to acquire these species. It’s father day weekend so if you’re a dad or bring your dad or buy stuff for your dad snag a free summer vegetable start while you’re here. It’s finally raining so let’s plant!

Re-wormed the worm bin, thanks ! We’ve been vermicomposting for many years but last fall found our bin had been completely taken over by black soldier flies and harlequin flower beetles due to us overwhelming the worms ability to eat what we added, which in turn attracted different composting species that we didn’t exactly want, and made it very difficult to process castings. We let the bugs eat down everything in the bin and hit a total reset- added a BioPod soldier fly bin so they can do the heavy lifting when it comes to nutrient cycling kitchen waste and we can focus the feedstock on our worm bin to things that are less attractive to the 6 legged composters and we can utilize the waste streams of both species more efficiently.

Tropical Giant Sage (Brilliantasia nitens) isn’t a true sage but strongly resembles one- sometimes utilized in some traditional herbal medicine in its native Cameroon, in a food forest it functions well as a pollinator attractor and ornamental. Will have a few 1 gallon plants available on June 1st and beyond during our Saturday open hours.
