As we reflect on this horrible disaster we want to thank everyone for their warm wishes and support. It means so much to all the staff at SVSC. We will keep you posted. Until then all patients are being seen in Lebanon, NH at our sister clinic Stonecliff Animal Clinic of New Hampshire. Congrats Darlena! Though she has been with Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center in Montpelier since we opened, Darlena has been working for the Stonecliff family much longer! When we owned S.A.V.E.S, Darlena was one of our Emergency Technicians. We are so fortunate to have her skills, humor and dedication and look forward to many, many more years. Thank you Darlena!

Our Lab Oliver became a senior overnight. Not really but it sure felt like it! This week began with an episode of Vestibular Disease. He lost his balance instantly and could no longer walk. It was so scary to see a dignified very active old guy become helpless! His eyes darted back and forth and he frantically tried to stand but was unable. Dr. Dan came to his rescue (I wonder if it bothers him to work on his own family), and Oliver is now almost back to normal. There can be many reasons that a dog has a vestibular episode. Inner or middle ear infection, brain tumor, trauma and hypothyroidism are just a few triggers. Our senior pets need closer attention during these golden years. Early detection leads to longer, happier life!

As the weather grows cooler and we reach for our sweaters, remember that this is Tick Season! Though you may not have liked the warm, dry weather this summer, neither did the ticks. They thrive in cool and wet so be prepared with your flea and tick prevention before it is to late and your pet has an unwelcome hitchhiker. Happy Fall Everyone!

When you come to Stonecliff we can guarantee honesty, compassion, and experience. We have been performing many complicated procedures for over 3o years. Dr. Daniel Kelly was the first veterinarian to be licensed to perform the TPLO procedure in New Hampshire and he has successfully operated on hundreds and hundreds of dogs over the years. There is a reason that people travel near and far for his experience. Call us for more information.

Chronic pain and swelling can make anyone grumpy but dogs are so very stoic that they will hide their pain until it gets so bad that they can't any longer! Watch for subtle changes in their behavior, gait, and energy level. Do they struggle to rise after exercise, lick incessantly at their joints. These can all be signs of chronic throbbing pain. One of the most common reasons for lameness in large breed dogs is Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture. Are you suspecting a knee problem? Give us a call and schedule a preliminary appointment with Dr. Dan Kelly. He can explain the different options both medically as well as surgically to remedy the situation. He has helped so many dogs regain their ability to run and jump and play!

You may not know this but sometimes our pets are heroes also! Technician Sara's dog Lauma donated blood to help a critical patient. Without this lifesaving transfusion the patient in need would not have had a chance. Typically small rural hospitals do not keep blood on hand because of the short shelf life. We need to rely on volunteers in short notice and since Lauma spends her time at Stonecliff when her Mom is working she was a perfect choice. Thank you Lauma for your heroic act, we know your Mom gave you lots of treats, and an extra swim in the river and probably a new toy (if not next time your here at Stonecliff help yourself to a toy in Lola's Boutique)!

Share the summer food fun with your pet for variety and healthy treats. Remember your pet should only receive 10% of their diet in treats. This means a 10 # dog or cat on an ideal 300 calorie diet should only get 30 calories of treats per day. A 75 # dog with a calorie requirement of 1400 calories could get 140 calories of healthy treats (care of The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine). Get your free calorie calculator at https://petnutritionalliance.org
Raspberry (15 raspberries=15 cal.), blueberry (15 berries=15 calories), and strawberries (3 medium=16 calories) are great treats. Watermelon, honey melon and cantaloupe are also great warm weather treats at 1/3 cup dices at 15 calories.
Out in the garden picking veggies, 1/2 cup of green beans=15 calories. If your dog is on a special diet check your veterinarian first before introducing snacks such as these. Happy Summer Everyone!

Dr. Eastman is entering her 6th year at Stonecliff and we are so very proud and grateful to have her as part of our veterinary team! With a special interest in animal behavior, Dr. Eastman has helped turn many pets into believers. We secretly call her our "pet whisperer". If it takes laying on the floor with an anxious dog or cat she never hesitates. Dr. Eastman also is a surgeon and general practitioner. Her patients benefit from her knowledge and patience. Thank you for being such a special part of Stonecliff.

We love our patients and are so proud to be their caregivers during times of stress, sickness and injury. The animal hospital does not have to be a scary place. Each one of your pets are held, comforted, and snuggled (and yes Darlena sung to) during their stay with us! Thank you for letting us be there for them when they most need support and love. Stonecliff Animal Clinic of NH and Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center, VT.

Did you know that swimming can be a perfect rehabilitation tool when your dog is recovering from TPLO surgery? The buoyancy of the water helps prevent stress on the joints. But is very important that you check with your surgeon to determine the best time to introduce swimming. Dogs that can be controlled both in and out of the water are good candidates. The most important thing to prevent is a dog that gets out of the water and runs around uncontrollably. This could be detrimental to the repaired limb. Correct rehabilitation and recovery after TPLO surgery is the key to having a dog that returns to full function.

Stonecliff

Stonecliff Animal Clinic has been practicing the highest quality veterinary medicine since 1990 in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. Originally a mixed animal practice, Dr. Kelly’s love of surgery and complicated medical cases lead him to concentrate on his surgical skills. In 1999 he participated in a training course on Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) with Dr. Barclay Slocum the creator of the procedure. He became the first veterinarian in Vermont and New Hampshire to be licensed to perform the TPLO. Since that time Dr. Kelly has completed many courses on correcting orthopedic conditions in the dog and cat.

The areas lack of 24 hour care lead Kelly to open Small Animal Veterinary Emergency Services (SAVES) in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Dr. Kelly and his family operated SAVES for six years until it was ready to stand on its own, and sold the practice in 2014 to the very capable Intown Veterinary Group that operated four other emergency facilities in the Northeast. Stonecliff Animal Clinic was then moved out of the SAVES building to a brand new facility on Mechanic Street in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Dr. Kelly’s patients come from near and far. A few years back a dog was flown in from Russia for a consult and TPLO surgery with Dr. Kelly. Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center (SVSC) has been created because many of Kelly’s clients reside in Central Vermont and he wanted to make it more convenient for them to seek his advice and care. Dr. Kelly will provide surgical services in both his Lebanon, NH and Montpelier VT locations. Find out why our clients love Stonecliff and their staff! Honest, experienced, affordable and dedicated to you and your pet!
