We've set up an Amazon Wishlist where you can easily donate safe, new toys to our shelter dogs. Every little bit helps, and your support will mean the world to them!

🎉 Happy National Pit Bull Awareness Day! 💜
Help us celebrate by showing off your Pitties! 😍

Here at the shelter, this day is close to our hearts. Why? Because bully breeds are some of the most loving, goofy, and loyal dogs we get to work with every day! 🥰 We take pride in being their biggest advocates, helping to break the harmful stigma that's been unfairly placed on these amazing dogs.

Not a Pit Bull owner? On the fence about bully breeds? Keep reading for some eye-opening facts and myth-busting truths about these incredible dogs:

🔹 MYTH 1: Pit Bull is a breed.
In reality, "Pit Bull" is not a breed but a label that describes dogs with certain physical traits. This includes breeds like the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and mixes that look similar. Many dogs labeled as "Pit Bulls" are a mix of various breeds, making visual identification unreliable. In fact, studies have shown that over 50% of dogs visually identified as "Pit Bulls" are actually a mix of other breeds like Boxers, Bulldogs, or even retrievers.

🔹 MYTH 2: Pit Bulls aren’t safe around kids.
Pit Bulls were once celebrated as "nanny dogs" because of their gentle and protective nature with children. During the early 20th century, Pit Bulls were featured in family portraits and even starred alongside kids in TV shows like The Little Rascals. Like any dog, proper training and socialization are key to ensuring a safe environment. Statistics show that, with responsible ownership, Pit Bulls are no more likely to harm children than any other breed. Always remember, supervision with any breed is important when kids are involved.

🔹 MYTH 3: Pit Bulls will turn on their owners.
This myth comes from misunderstandings about canine behavior. Dogs, including Pit Bulls, don’t just "snap." Aggressive behaviors are usually a result of mistreatment, poor training, or medical issues. Studies from organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) show that dogs of any breed can become aggressive if they’re not treated well or trained properly, but breed-specific tendencies are overstated. A well-cared-for Pit Bull is a loyal and loving companion who thrives in a stable, loving environment.

🔹 MYTH 4: Pit Bulls have locking jaws and stronger bites.
The idea of Pit Bulls having "locking jaws" is purely fiction. Their jaw structure is no different from that of other dog breeds, and no dog breed possesses a "locking" mechanism in their jaws. Bite force studies have debunked the myth of Pit Bulls having the strongest bites. Research by National Geographic showed that Pit Bulls actually have less bite force (235 pounds per square inch) compared to breeds like Rottweilers (328 pounds) and German Shepherds (238 pounds). What this tells us is that it’s not the breed’s bite that matters—it's training and how they are raised.

🔹 MYTH 5: Pit Bulls are naturally vicious.
This stereotype is unfair to Pit Bulls and all dogs. Dogs, like people, are a product of their environment. Aggression in any dog, including Pit Bulls, is usually the result of poor socialization, neglect, or abuse. Countless studies and expert opinions (like those from the Centers for Disease Control and the AVMA) state that there's no reliable data proving that Pit Bulls are inherently more dangerous than any other breed. In fact, temperament tests by the American Temperament Test Society show that Pit Bulls pass at a higher rate than many other breeds. For example, Pit Bulls have an 86% passing rate, compared to the 83% average for all breeds.

🔹 MYTH 6: Pit Bulls are more aggressive than other dogs.
Aggression is individual to the dog, not the breed. A 2008 University of Pennsylvania study found that smaller breeds like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas were more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior than larger breeds like Pit Bulls. The reason why Pit Bulls often rank higher in aggressive incidents is because irresponsible owners sometimes encourage aggressive behavior, or rescue dogs may have trauma from past abuse. Responsible ownership makes a huge difference! On temperament tests, Pit Bulls often rank better than other popular breeds such as Golden Retrievers and Beagles.
________________________________________
Bonus Fact: There’s strong evidence that the people who adopt Pit Bulls are also strong advocates of their rights. A 2013 study found that Pit Bull owners are some of the most responsible pet owners, going the extra mile to train and advocate for their dogs. Let’s keep supporting the narrative of love and compassion these dogs deserve.
