This is how well horses can and should stand for farrier work. Horses get to spend 20+ hours a day doing their own thing. So when we ask them to peacefully cooperate, they owe us the amount of time it takes to trim or shoe them quietly. All of this clients horses will stand unrestrained or with out a handler for the entirety of their hoofcare. I am planning to hold a demonstration on the training of horses and handlers, as soon as I have a location to use for said demonstration.

I only work in my shop forge in the winter because I like cold temperatures when I'm standing by my coal forge. However these 60-70 degree days are not winter weather.
But I've been doing an hour a day in the forge to resharpen some old skills, anyway.

I am going to post helpful information at least once a week. I have recommended this book many times to clients over the years. So, I thought it should be the first helpful information to post. And just flipping thru the pages has inspired me to read it again, for the umpteenth time.

Some of you may not know, that I had a chainsaw accident, a few weeks ago. And was unable to work while my foot healed. I am back to shoeing and trying to get all the appointments I missed rescheduled. I want to thank everyone who has been waiting for their patience.

After more than 20 years in this business, a lot of studying horse behavior and learning from the best horsemen in the horsemanship business, I have mastered the art of getting horses to stand patiently and calmly to have farrier work down to their hooves.

With that said all sound horses can be taught to stand quietly.

However 98.37% of the time it is the horse holder who is the issue with the horse not standing quietly.

Because they think their job is to just hold on to the rope or halter and restrain the horses head from moving. This is completely illogical. Holding the horse from moving it's head only annoys the horse and does not prevent the horse from moving it's body.

The purpose of a horse holder is to manage the horse, NOT restrain a horse. If you have a horse or horses that don't stand for farrier work it is because the horse doesn't know what is expected of it.

If you have a horse that doesn't stand for farrier work then it is not the horse that needs training as much as it is the individual who needs to learn how to manage their horse.

If you would like to learn how to do this and have your horse/horses stand quietly and patiently for his hoof care, then contact me and If you are willing to learn I will provide the service of teaching you.

Correct a wise man and he will appreciate you,
Correct a fool and he will hate you.

Client's new horse was uncooperative, after she had to leave the other horses. After a bit of ground work, she calmed down and stood patiently and cooperated for the remainder of her trim, without even needing to be held. You can't restrain a horse or force it to cooperate. You just have to teach the horse what is expected of them, thru the use of natural horsemanship.

A lot of horses this year have manes, tails and forelocks full of cockleburrs and stick-tights. A much easier way to get them out is to saturate the burrs and tangled hair in WD-40. This will let them slide more easily out, as you hold the hair close to the horse. Just work them out one at a time. And no the WD-40 will not bother the horse.

This is a good Brand for Flyspray. It's PIRANHA, an Oil base flyspray. it cost more than BRONCO, But you get what you pay for. I carry this in my truck, because I need something that works, and will keep the flys from bugging the horse, while I trim or shoe said horse.

This is what a healthy hoof looks like. Notice the absence of rot, from fungal or bacterial infection. And observe the clean thick hoofwall.

This horse along with the owner's other horse both suffered from lameness induced by thrush, "bacterial infection of the frog".

The owner has alleviated all signs and symptoms of this, by maintaining a dry environment for the horses in their stalls, and by keeping them out of wet conditions in warm weather.

Nice little filly, she had dubbed off her toes a bit in the trainers areana. This was her first set of shoes. She did great for her first shoeing. I have trimmed her several times. Big thanks to Orrin Bromm for being the horse holder.

This is a horse I've trimmed for 10years. His age is close to 30. He has suffered from shivers since I started caring for his feet. He is fine to trim his fronts. He can only take his hind legs forward and extremely low. This is how I have had to trim him for many years.
