Our volunteers work directly with the shelter staff to provide the animals at the Robin I. Kroogman New Haven shelter with the best, most compassionate service possible. As part of our efforts, we do the following:

• Organize and sponsor monthly adoption events in communities throughout the Greater New Haven area. We work directly with North Shore Animal League’s state-of-the-art mobile adoption

unit and have established partnerships with a wide range of caring businesses that host these events.

• Pay for unusual medical care that the animals would not ordinarily receive, including x-rays and tests for diseases like heart worm and feline leukemia.

• Participate with TEAM, a mobile spay/neuter facility for cats.

• Sponsor a foster care program for animals who need special attention.

• Offer personal assistance in choosing a companion animal to people who want to adopt from the shelter.

• Work with other rescue groups to place animals in good homes.

• Appear weekly on WTNH-TV News 8’s popular “Pet of the week” segment.

• Maintain two Web sites, one at www.findafriendforlife.org and the other on Petfinder.com, which generates many quality adoptions. (Visit us at www.petfinder.org/shelters/CT74.html)

• Publish Among Friends, a twice -yearly newsletter.

• Educate owners about pet care.

• Sponsor fund-raising events

Our volunteers work in many areas. Some deal directly with the animals-grooming, walking , and playing with the animals to keep them socialized. Others prefer to work on our fund-raising and public awareness programs. The shelter's adoption fee is $90 cash and includes a spay/neuter. There is an additional fee at the vet for pain medication, antibiotics and Lyme disease and Heartworm test.

The Robin I. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter is closed today in honor of Veterans Day, thank you to all who served. Our shelter will be open again tomorrow from 12:30-4:30.

Sergeant Stubby (1916 or 1917 - April 4, 1926), was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat. America's first war dog, Stubby, served 18 months 'over there' and participated in seventeen battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and even once caught a German spy by the seat of his pants (holding him there until American Soldiers found him).

Sergeant Stubby was originally found by soldiers training on the grounds of Yale Field right here in New Haven... who knows, maybe some of his descendants are at our shelter today! Thanks to everyone who served and is serving, whether they have 2 or 4 legs!

This picture was taken at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

SPECK is looking for her new home! She's a 5-year-old Bulldog mix who is very sweet. She enjoys exploring our fenced in dog run and seems to get along with most other dogs. Speck is a medium energy dog who loves to get affection - I recently spent some time with her in our dog run and all she wanted to do was sit next to me and give me kisses. Please consider her if you are looking for an addition to your family!
