A Woodduck drake on the work bench yesterday. He was pretty busted up but all and all he came out nice. His feet will be added once he dries and then he’s headed to a bronze swamp maple branch on a pedestal.

32 years in the making !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
32 years ago I started on the journey of completing the North America Grand Slam of waterfowl (killing one drake of the 41 species of huntable waterfowl in North America). I completed it last Tuesday with my amazing wife by my side which made it that much more memorable to me, she puts up with so much of my no stop need for adventure that she deserves a gold medal Nicole Bellanger. It began when I was 7 1/2 years sitting on my dads lap killing a drake northern shoveler and ended in Colorado hunting with my wife killing number 41 a Common Merganser. I killed all 41 species with the same gun that I started shooting when I was 12 ( birds killed from 7 1/2 to 12 I repeated with the new gun) this journey spanned 32 years. I know there are people that have finished it in as little as one season but for me that wasn’t possible for many reasons but in the end the journey to get there taught me so much about life. I grew up in this and it taught me so much about life along the way. It taught me to work hard and to deal with failure and disappointment. It taught me to never give up on a dream. One of the most important things it taught me was how to develop, keep and value relationships. I learned how to cherish every moment with one’s you love dogs and humans alike. I have lost cherished friends and mentors along the way and some amazing dogs. What I wouldn’t give for 5 more minutes in the blind with them or just one more retrieve. As a little boy I would always ask my dad for 5 more minutes before we had to leave for being in a duck blind was where I found my peace. Time away from the world and spending it with my dad and then later with the people that mean the most to me. My dad never said no to me asking to stay 5 more min no matter how busy he was or what responsibilities were waiting for him. I know when he’s no longer with me all I’m going to want is 5 more minutes so all of those years I value the gift he gave to me. Every single first of a duck on that list I have shared with someone I care about which made the journey so much more. The journey to the 41 meant so much more to me than any of the ducks I killed along the way it was the journey of finding peace in what god gave to us and the relationships with the ones that mean the most. As I’ve spent the last week reminiscing each and every first bird all the way from beginning to end I really just want 5 more min of the journey. It’s a bittersweet moment knowing it’s over.

A king going in a single wave from St. Paul taken this season by Capt Jack Nelsen with Aleutian Island Waterfowlers.

The water everyone has been waiting to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its finally time, I’ve been waiting to launch this base for 3 years and today is the day. Now let’s back up I’ve been working on water for 11 years and this base started to come to life 3 years ago when I went to St. Paul to shoot King Eiders. Every hunter that has experienced St Paul will understand exactly what I mean when I say this. I wanted this wave to represent the beauty and power of the Bering sea, its such a humbling experience as a duck hunter to float in a zodiac boat among these giant rolling waves and realize the power god gave them. It’s a such an amazing feeling to get to experience that. I wanted to give each and every hunter the opportunity to go back to that place every time they look at their kings in this base.
