Recently, our local SPCA and local private rescues heroically rescued 22 Great Dane dogs from deplorable conditions in Dutchess County. These dogs are all under socialized and had never been on a leash, and as a result, their rescue was far from easy. Our local shelters and rescues were already at capacity prior to taking on these dogs, but they strategically figured out how to accommodate the Danes in need and start them on their journey to a better life. We at New Paltz Animal Hospital will be doing everything we can to continue providing these facilities with any additional medical treatment that they need for all of their residence.
These facilities are non for profit, relying completely on donations, volunteers, adopters, and advocates. We have compiled a list of needs for these facilities and will be collecting donations here at the hospital to bring to the shelter/rescue.
If you would like to donate any goods, please stop in the office Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm and there will be a collection bin in the waiting room.
We appreciate our community's help with doing what we can to support all of the local animals in need!

The Doctors at New Paltz Animal Hospital want to address the recent Canine Respiratory Disease Outbreak. While there is no reported cases currently in New York State at the moment we suspect that it will eventually make its way here and ask dog parents to be aware of what to look for and what precautions to take. We urge anyone who may think that their dog is not well in any way to contact us immediately and schedule an appointment to be seen. We recommend if your dog is exhibiting any of the below stated symptoms that you quarantine them from any other pets in the household until they can be seen by your Veterinarian. If you are bringing your dog in to be seen due to any of the below named symptoms please let the staff know that you have arrived for your appointment by calling or stopping in first before bringing your dog into the building. We will post updates as we find out more about this disease.

What is it?

This is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection in dogs that has been occurring in many parts of the country, such as California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island. This infection has similar symptoms to canine influenza and kennel cough and the cause of this illness has not yet been determined.

How it speads:

This infection is spread through direct contact or through water droplets from sneezing and coughing.

Common signs of canine respiratory illness;

· Coughing
· Sneezing
· Labored breathing
· Nose or eye discharge
· Lethargy
· Decreased appetite

Precautions:

· Avoid high risk situations such as boarding kennels, dog parks, doggy daycare
· Do not share dog bowls or toys
· Ensure your dog is up to date on their routine vaccines (consider vaccinating for Bordetella and influenza) While the existing vaccines may not specifically target this unknown infection, maintaining overall health through routine vaccinations can help support a dog’s immune system in combating various infections.

Calling all fur-bulous pet parents! Let's paws for a moment to share some useful tips to keep our furry friends safe this fall season:
1️⃣ "Leaf" the toxic plants alone. 🌿 Some plants (and mushrooms) can be dangerous if ingested. 🍂

2️⃣ Candles are a great fall addition to your home. However, a knocked-over candle by a curious pet leads to trouble. 🕯️

3️⃣ Outdoor walks are paw-some, but stick to open areas and keep your pets secured on a leash to avoid harm's way. 🐾
