Happy Friday!!

Every year, from mid-spring to early summer, we receive an increase in calls about a red circular rash found on your pet’s underbelly or inner leg. Most often this rash is caused by the bite of a tiny annoying insect known as a Black Fly. Black Flies, otherwise known as “May Flies” or Buffalo Gnats will often be active between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. When your dog is an unsuspecting victim of a swarm of gnats, they can cause an itchy (non-life threatening) rash that ultimately makes you fear your dog is having a reaction to something.

- With winter in full swing, it’s important to protect your dog against the cold. Here are some ways to make winter walks safer and more enjoyable for you and your dog.

Tolerance for cold varies from dog to dog depending on size, coat, age, and overall health. Know your dog's limit and keep a close eye on their behavior. If your dog is shivering, whining, slowing down, or holding up one or more paws, cut the walk short and head inside.

Beware the poisonous shroom 🍄

If your dog happens to ingest a mushroom that you fear is poisonous, call your Vet immediately. In New England we have 5 species that could harm your curious pooch.

To better help your Vet identify the mysterious fungus, bring a piece (or whatever your dog might of vomited) to us for identification.

If you see any of these on your walks, you have our permission to compost them with your boot back into the ground!

- Veterinarians have known for years that grapes and raisins are dangerous for dogs, but the reason has remained a mystery. Equally baffling is why some dogs have eaten the fruit without incident while others suffered effects as serious as kidney failure.

A new theory by veterinarians from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) may shed some light on the situation. The APCC veterinarians suggest that it is the tartaric acid in grapes that makes the fruit toxic to dogs.

They made their discovery while investigating a case of a dog who became sick after eating homemade playdough. The dog’s signs didn’t match those usually caused by salt in playdough, so they asked for the recipe. They found that the playdough contained cream of tartar, which is a byproduct of tartaric acid.

Tartaric acid is also found in grapes and raisins, and the concentration varies depending on the type of grape, growing conditions, and ripeness. That may explain why grapes sometimes cause no problems and other times are deadly.
