NEW YORK CITY BABY BIRD RESCUE

MISSION STATEMENT

New York City Baby Bird Rescue seeks to rescue, rehabilitate, and raise orphaned, injured and sick baby birds until they are ready for soft release into a New York CIty flock. Saving baby birds that have fallen from nests or have been removed and discarded by New York City residents or construction companies is also part of our goal. In addition,

any baby birds rescued by New York City residents will be accepted by NYC Baby Bird Rescue as well. NYC Baby Bird Rescue will work with veterinarians at Animal General veterinary hospital and the Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation center. Until a federal license is obtained by NYC Baby Bird Rescue, federallly protected birds (most birds except Pigeons, House Sparrows, and Starlings) will be given emergency care and then transported as soon as possible to a wild bird rehabilitator or rehab organization possessing a federal license.

I deeply regret I can't respond to all emergency messages. Babies under my care so far demand all my energy. Please consult advice sites I post, BUT they're only guides.I haven't finished my own. You will know best. Panic for 1 minute, then breathe. Assess the situation. PLEASE BE KIND TO YOURSELF. You're doing your best. The birds need you. You will help them live or help them die humanely. THANK YOU. It is a privilege to 'meet' the best people I know.

I want to thank everyone for looking after NYC Baby Bird Rescue while I was insanely busy with babies last season, then just plain insane myself until nearly recovering. I am finally able to look at all the pix texted and posted to me over the past year and record the rescue and rescuer. I am spending some time in Maine ( where I grew up), and will have fewer babies to care for and much more time to help everyone with their emergencies. NYC Baby BIrd Rescue or Any Place in the World Baby Bird Rescue will survive I hope. I consider the page a collaboration. And, the support and understanding given to me have touched me deeply and helped me find my way back.

First Baby 2017! Its parents were trying their best, but were pecking it too much. This happens often if the parents are less than a year old. This is a nail-biter so far. The rescuer was devastated to take the baby from Mom and Dad, but she had to. The second egg had fallen on the ground early on. There are red marks from pecks on baby's crop and some damage was done. I created yet another customized technique and Baby is processing the food. But it's growth rate is slow. Every day, with birds and everything else too, I am humbled when I see that I will always encounter a new experience and do my best. What I do know for sure, is that I don't know!

The pigeons I am over-wintering have been giving ME the best rehab now! This is Cadie at about 8-10 days when she arrived, a few days later wearing a very chic vet-wrap splint I made after finding foot fractures (they healed....phew!) and as a beautiful girl now. She is small for her age but bolder and more curious than the other pigeons. I never stop learning about behavior....well, I never stop learning at all. Every baby season I am humbled if I dare think I know it all!

We've been here 1 week and this Herring Gull gave me such a gift. Laughing out loud amidst all the stress. There is no food in that bag. Only some perching rocks for the avian kids.

(First, I am absolutely keeping this page and looking forward to helping EVERYONE in NYC and everywhere needing bird help.) I can't believe I managed to do it, but I moved! My partner, Lulu, and 10 pre-fledge pigeons are renting an adorable house near the ocean in South Portland Maine! It was a bit sudden, in a way. Our Chelsea rent was becoming obscenely expensive (no rent control), we didn't know where to move, I started a casual search for house rentals in the Portland area where I grew up and everything clicked.

A DEEPLY HEARTFELT APOLOGY to everyone I have not been able to help in the last few weeks, either here or by phone. I am ripped apart by this. After caring for 'my' babies, my priority is to help everyone who rescues and needs guidance. You are amazing people. I learn as much from you as, hopefully you learn from me. The next post explains why...

The Summer of Sparrow Love 2016....5 months of cute-osity and stress! Many sparrow nests around and fledglings spend time on the ground before getting the flying thing going. A very busy block..delivery trucks, foot traffic from subway. But....THIS in the center of NYC. Bird life and people life are so intertwined. It's an honor. SO MANY of you know this situation so well now!

A rare moment to check-in here. All of you amazing baby rescuers, keep on texting! I think I am able to respond and help over 90% of the time. If you don't hear back, just text again. I love this picture of Kennebec! Brought to me by the Wild Bird Fund as a Yellow Fluff on June 12.

Here is the latest rescue brought to me, Baby S**o (after one of Maine's long and beautiful rivers - my home state). Everyone know what this is??

06/11/2016

First time since MAY 6 I have had the time and energy to post! I thank everyone for calling and texting me about babies and other birds for help. I am overwhelmed the courage, caring, and time everyone has given to rescuing. Many of the people contacting me are first time bird rescuers, yet....they have not hesitated to join the Avian World! I'll post about the rescues as time allows....

If anyone needs help with a baby bird, or any bird, at this point in baby season, texting and sending a pic are the best ways to get a quicker response! 917-355-7550 Thanks, and always share pix and experiences here as I WILL see them eventually! Thanks you all!

April 19, 2016...first hatchling sparrow! Is it early or am I just getting old?? Another first time rescuer kept this little guy warm for 2 hours on the subway from Brooklyn. #1,2,3,4 at least on the "emergency hatchling treatment" protocol list. This baby has a big bruise on its tummy. But he's a real powerhouse. It helps a lot that he's had probably one full day of growth and parental care.....oy...this is #1 songbird already!

I am so impressed by the way those of you finding nestling mourning doves that have fledged too soon are willing to watch for long enough to see if their parents are still finding and feeding them! 3 times this week, I've worked together with people figuring out the best thing to do. With babies, nestlings, and pre-fledges, every situation is different. An easy way to see if a baby is being fed is to look at the p**p! If it is some bright green with a lot of white, it has not been fed. Here is a happy reunion in Brooklyn!

Update on the first pair of nestlings: Jonathan an Sydney. They are doing very very well. Eating seeds, drinking water, p**ping wherever they "hang out". They are so independent and wild. They don't like me to get too close. So, in order to make sure they get the kind of soft release I like....I'm going to do it myself! A used to, but it gets so hard once a lot of hatchlings come. I'm taking them up to the roof once or twice a day and letting them get to know their neighborhood as well as the flock I am feeding (now the flock gets to pig out! I don't like to feed regularly for a few reasons, but I will to make sure these 2 have a great start in 2 or 3 weeks!

Yesterday....an older nestling was rescued by another super caring member, Sylvia. I think the baby is around 25 days old. The legs are malformed from maybe nest conditions, maybe a congenital condition..... but I was able to reposition them manually without causing pain or feeling resistance (and they are not paralyzed, I should add). Hoping to apply some kind of hobble, splint, brace, or whatever an expert I will consult recommends. A name for her suddenly came to me as I was eating a mochi from Trader Joe's.....MOCHI!

My first baby "clients" have arrived! They were seen at a construction site on the ground, very scared, by my friend Victoria, then rescued by a mutual friend Laurie, then transported to me by a woman they knew! They were stressed, dehydrated, and hungry, but not too seriously underweight. I see places where pox lesions have recently dried up and fallen off, so I'm treating for secondary infections as I saw dried blood. But I really think they are going to be absolutely fine! (Dark photo.....I should post a new one)

Where were we with the baby "count up"? 9 or 10 days? Formula on this one, blurry but I think 9/10 days is about right.

In this video filmed on Jan. 30 by Showing Animals Respect and Kindness, a person is seen tossing and throwing small rocks at a pigeon wounded during a live shoot in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The suspect was later identified as a 17-year-old from Bridg

Thistle! First time I've seen her balancing on a rock! She is using her tail for balance, but, this is definitely progress. She flies well. I am slowly trying to build leg strength by increasing take off to go up to her favorite hang-outs.

01/31/2016

This was a photo from yet another caring city dweller, Anna. From her initial description of the situation on her balcony, I knew there was a nest, one dead baby and,I thought,1 living baby. Luckily, I always ask for pix.. An adult is sitting on TWO nestlings. One is clearly dead, and I thought maybe the sibling was too. And a parent still sitting on them! I "flew" (har...har) up to 43rd by taxi, several scenarios running through my head. Anna, like so many of you, has a golden aura and I felt calm and focused as we headed to her balcony. Peering through the curtains underneath her gardening bench, I saw this scene....with one baby ALIVE! The parent (probably Mom as it was evening) hopped off the top of the basket, but stayed close. I needed to remove and examine the sweet little dead baby, and quickly examine the living one. There were no superficial wounds or anything else to be able to determine cause of death. Living one looked great, was feisty, and had a full crop. After cleaning out debris, baby went back on the nest and Mom gave me the evil eye from about 1 foot away! I had a nice piece of material for wrapping up the dead baby, as is my habit. While whispering whatever words come to my mind, I gently wrap the body in the cloth, then bow. Even knowing that the bird's soul or essence is no longer in its body, it is meaningful. I think only about that bird and what it might have suffered and hope that it felt joy. And if a baby pigeon lives long enough to become feathered, it has definitely felt joy! Thank you Anna. She will keep me informed. Thank you ALL!

Down feathers on Altricial Wild Baby Birds. Why? I can't find info. This fluff does not keep them warm, but it must provide some advantage, right? But House Sparrows and many perching birds are naked. I took these H. Sparrow pix immediately after urgent care. The pic of one hatchling, naked, dehydrated, ice cold will not download. (New iPhoto caused many problems! I could only download these from Picasa...)The duo and the entire group DID survive, enough pin feathers plus they had each other to help with warmth.

HELP WANTED WITH PIGEON PLUMAGE RESEARCH! POST COOL PLUMAGE PIX with your name (real or otherwise!) and where pic was taken. Plus any other info you would like to include. Quality of photo is not important.I SO want to complete this booklet/paper/article before baby season. I am compiling pictures of every kind of pigeon plumage combination I can and researching feathers in general and the ways colors themselves are produced. Then...ugh onto possible genetic history creating certain plumages. Colors come from pigments (cellular)/iridescence (structural), and non-iridsecent structural. Will explain more if there's any interest.

My neighbor rescued a baby bird that fell out of its nest and I am keeping it overnight because it’s chilly and raining. Not sure how to properly help him “get on his feet”. We tried feeding him but I’m not sure if he swallowed or not. We have him on a towel in a basket with a heater underneath and a towel covering the top (with two openings on the sides for air). Please let us know what steps we should take. Thank you:)
I bought the wrong item and cannot us it. There is also a unopened bottle of enrofloxacin.

Could you use it?
Motherless ducklings swimming back and forth across boat lake from Hernshead. July 2nd 6:30 AM

Yesterday there was a cardinal in the foyer of my apartment building. I left a window open in the hallway so it was my mistake. Anyway I caught the cardinal in a blanket and released him outside. But now there is a constant chirping coming from my roof crawlspace. I think the carinal might have had a fletchling with her and it found its way into the crawlspace. Its chirping but I can't see it. It's not flying around. It's not possible to crawl into this space, its like 1.5 feet high between the ceiling and the roof and full of debris. Any advice on how to lure it out or any agency to call? Set out seed? Leave the hallway window open again? Hoping some of you might be able to advise. Thank you!
Due to the Coronavirus_STARVING PIGEONS, SPARROWS AND OTHER CITY WILD BIRDS that call the concrete jungle home. Without the usual heavy foot traffic in the city resulting in food being dropped or people feeding purposely, the birds have no source of food and consequently are getting thinner and more aggressive with each other. The health of these birds are declining, some more than others. This could also become a health hazard if the birds become weak and start to die in the streets or alleyways of the city. Lets collectively help these vulnerable birds. I call on those who can, to identify areas where there are birds that you can help, for example, they could be right outside your door or street corner, Midtown (especially) or East Side near playgrounds or busy subway walking areas? Consider leaving out wild bird seed, steel-cut oats, bread and other dry foods for these beings. I know from my own experience that every crumb is consumed. There is never any waste. These are unusual times and require an unusual effort to be aware of our surroundings. Thank you for your attention and hope we can continue to do good things together! Also, don't forget the birds that live in suburban mall parking lots. They all need you! :-)
I made quite a few crocheted nest for Australia, they now have enough ,would you have any need for them
This little guy flew in to the dog run in my building in Brooklyn. Can't ID it for the life of me. Any thoughts? I managed to gently move him from the ground in to this tall planter where no dogs will be able to reach him. Will check if it's still there in a few hours or so. Any advice? Thank you!
