Our Purpose
The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association is a legally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering, improving, promoting, and protecting the versatile hunting dog in North America. Underlying these aims is the desire to serve the interests of game conservation, prevention of cruelty to animals, and the gun dog hunter by helping the hunter to train his dog to wor

k before and after the shot, on land and in water. It was created to supplement the activities of those clubs by providing a proven, standard method of evaluating the performance of all versatile hunting dogs, consistent with North American hunting practices, regardless of breed.

We had another extremely productive training day this past weekend. From first timers, to handlers of Versatile Champions, each hand in the pot makes the community stronger. Teamwork, volunteering, and helping one another accomplish their goals with their dogs is what we do this for. Keep on helping, and keep on training! 46 days out from “hunt em up!”

Mel and Lee Scripture have always been dog lovers who live in Columbia, North Carolina. Lee works full-time for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and part-time as a hunting guide to one of the local guide outfitters in Columbia, North Carolina. Lee has always been an avid hunter and has always loved working with dogs. Mel volunteered with a dog rescue and served on the board of the Halifax Dog Squad for several years. Growing up, Mel worked alongside her mother and father as meat cutters who processed meat for the local hunters. However, when Lee and Mel found each other again after 30 years, Mel became interested in learning to hunt and working with versatile dogs.
They are new to the NAVHDA way of life. They joined the Carolinas Chapter in 2021. Neither of them had anticipated on being involved in NAVHDA when they rescued their first German Short-haired pointer (GSP) – Odie from living the remainder of his life in a cage. They later acquired a Friedelsheim puppy – Friedelsheim’s Whiskey River Script. As part of the purchase agreement, Whiskey had to run in the Natural Ability (NA) test.
Lee’s work colleague, Mike Zlotnicki suggested that they come to the training days at the Carolinas Chapter to help get Whiskey ready for the NA test. Mike was gracious enough to explain the NAVDHA ropes and introduce them to Wes Everman, Blake Horst, and Stacy Horst. All of these and other individuals played a part in getting Whiskey ready for the test. At 5 months, Whiskey traveled to the Rappahannock Chapter in Virginia and earned a perfect score in the NA test. This was the beginning of the NAVHDA way of life for Mel and Lee.
Mel and Lee decided that Whiskey needed a mate. They acquired Full Tilt’s Rye Creek Script – call name “Rye”. Rye is handled by Mel, and they are working together to become a strong TEAM. For the past year and a half, Mel and Lee have been actively engaged in the Carolinas Chapter. They attend the monthly training days and volunteer their time to help others in training their dogs. They also volunteer on test days. To them, being a member of the Chapter is so much more than just having a place to train, it is a village that helps raise/train their dogs and handlers to be the best that they can be. Train, Hunt and Test On…Guiding All to be Versatile!

Good morning everyone! Today is going to be the start of a little tradition we’re going to do from time to time, which will be a Member Spotlight. We’d like to introduce some of our very own, speak to their journey in NAVHDA, and talk about their path! Our first member is our very own Kim Ward!

“I was born and raised in the low country of South Carolina, and always had the outdoors in my heart, hunting deer, then later turkey, then acquired a couple of bird dogs and naturally started shooting quail, so the creation of Broomstraw Kennels came about. While looking for a better line of dog , I found Bella, 3/4 German and with a NAVHDA pedigree. Researching the organization certainly was intriguing, so I joined and attended my first meeting in North Carolina. To my surprise, there was a somber announcement that the founding member whom started the Carolina’s Chapter had died in an accident. Sad day indeed. Fast forward, Bella was my 1st NA and UT and later down the road gave me several breeders awards. By now, I have purchased several more bird dogs with her line, primarily Sharpshooter’s, which lead me to more testing Utility dogs, and the opportunity to attend the 2017 NAVHDA Invitational. If it were not for so many gracious members who become such great friends, coming together to help me train and prepare, some inviting me to Maryland, Georgia, and North Carolina to make this happen I would’ve never had the courage or gained the knowledge; it was a humbling honor, and we passed the test. It felt life altering to say the least, humbling. Currently I host and lead chapter training dates once a month on my property, additional training days take place with friends, and training dogs dogs for people who either test or just want a better hunting companion has been a real honor. I now enjoy ND waterfowl and upland hunts with my well trained dogs using the NAVHDA system. “

Thank you so much for sharing Kim! Here’s her awesome hunting companions! Have a great weekend everyone!
