🚨 Parvovirus Alert: Protect Your Pet! 🚨

At Newbury Vet Clinic, we've recently seen an increase in cases of parvovirus (parvo) in our area. Here’s what you need to know to keep your furry family members safe:

This highly contagious and potentially deadly virus primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), lethargy, and dehydration.

Why is Parvo so Dangerous?
Parvo spreads easily through direct contact with an infected dog or contaminated surfaces (like soil, bowls, or clothing).
The virus is incredibly resilient and can survive in the environment for months.
Without treatment, parvo can be fatal within days.

How Can You Protect Your Dog?
🐾 Vaccinate! Puppies should begin their parvo vaccine series at 6-8 weeks of age and receive boosters as recommended by your vet. Adult dogs need regular boosters, too.
🐾 Avoid High-Risk Areas: Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, avoid dog parks, pet stores, or areas where unknown dogs frequent.
🐾 Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands and disinfect surfaces after contact with other dogs.

If your dog shows any signs of parvo, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite, contact us immediately at 802-866-5354.

💉 Vaccination saves lives. Call us today to schedule your dog's vaccine or booster! Together, we can stop the spread of parvo in our community.

🐾 "Dog Bites and Delights: Prevention Edition!" 🐾

We know your furry friend is more "pawsitive vibes" than "shark week," but even the sweetest dogs can have their moments. Here's how to keep everyone's tails wagging:

1️⃣ Ask before you pet – Dogs love belly rubs... from people they know. Not strangers with enthusiastic jazz hands. 🖐️🐕
2️⃣ Respect their space – A dog on duty (or napping like a pro) needs their space. Translation: don't poke the sleeping floof. 😴🚫
3️⃣ Supervise kiddos – Kids are great, but dogs don’t always love sticky hands full of snacks and surprises. 🍭👶
4️⃣ Learn their signals – Growling isn’t "singing," and a wagging tail doesn’t always mean "happy camper." Body language is key! 🐶📖

🍁 Thanksgiving Safety Tips for Your Pets! 🍁

As we gather for Thanksgiving, it’s easy to forget that many holiday foods can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this holiday season! 🦃🐾

🚫 Avoid Feeding Table Scraps: Rich, fatty foods like turkey skin, gravy, and stuffing can lead to serious digestive issues and even pancreatitis in pets.

🍫 No Chocolate or Desserts: Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free sweets), and other holiday treats are toxic to pets. Be mindful of what’s within reach of curious noses!

🧄 Skip the Seasonings: Onions, garlic, and certain spices can be harmful to pets. Even cooked bones can splinter and cause injury.

🧺 Keep Trash Secure: Holiday leftovers and wrappers can smell tempting, but they can be choking hazards or cause blockages if ingested.

Let’s make sure this Thanksgiving is filled with safe snuggles and happy tummies for all family members—two- and four-legged! 🐶🐱❤️

Wishing you a safe and joyful Thanksgiving from everyone at Newbury Vet Clinic!

🩺 Mast Cell Tumors (MCT) in Dogs: What You Need to Know 🐾

Mast cell tumors are one of the most common types of skin cancer in dogs. These tumors can appear as lumps or bumps on the skin and can vary greatly in size and appearance—making it crucial to have any new growths checked by a vet!

What to Watch For:

A lump or mass on your dog’s skin
Redness, swelling, or sores around the mass
Itching, irritation, or other signs of discomfort
While some MCTs are low-grade and can be removed with surgery, others can be more aggressive, spreading to other parts of the body. Early detection is key! If caught early, many dogs, like our sweet clinic pup Lucy, can thrive after surgery and treatment.

👉 Pro Tip: If you notice a new lump on your dog, don’t wait—bring them in for an exam! Regular monitoring and early treatment can make all the difference.

Let’s keep our furry friends healthy and happy! 🐕💙

🐾 Daylight Savings is Here! 🐾

It’s that time of year when clocks "fall back" an hour—and for our furry friends, that might mean a little extra patience when it comes to potty time! 🌅

Imagine this: your pup is ready to go, tail wagging, pacing by the door… but wait! It's technically not time yet. They might have to "hold it" an hour longer as we humans adjust. 🐕💩

Here are a few tips to help them ease into the time change:

Gradual Adjustment: Try adjusting their schedule by 10-15 minutes each day leading up to Sunday.
More Playtime: Keep them busy with some extra playtime to help distract from the schedule change.
Patience: Remember, our pets rely on their routines—so a little extra love and patience can go a long way.
Happy Daylight Savings, and may your mornings be filled with wagging tails and happy pups! 🕰🐶💛
