Your Pet and Thanksgiving Stress: Do This, Not That!

Just like us, our pets can experience feelings of stress. This can be caused by altered schedules, unfamiliar faces, and loud noises that may come with your Thanksgiving plans.

Keep your pet calm and collected with our Thanksgiving safety tips:

👍 DO THIS: Secure all entrances of your home. With visitors coming and going, there can be opportunities for your furry friend to escape.

❌ NOT THAT: Feed your pet food from your feast. Food that is festive for people is no picnic for pets! Pets who get into Thanksgiving foods like turkey, gravy, pie, and mashed potatoes can end up very sick in the emergency room afterwards.

Quick Tip: Secure trash to ensure your furry friend will not get into those Thanksgiving scraps.

👍 DO THIS: Travel safely with your pet. You should bring food, medications, and health certificates in case of an emergency.

Concerned about your pet’s stress levels this Thanksgiving? We can help!

📞 Call us at (215) 515-5392 to request an appointment!

Your Pet and Halloween Safety: Do This, Not That! 🎃

Keep your furry friend safe this Halloween with these quick tips:

👍 DO THIS: Store Halloween candy in a secure spot where your pet cannot reach. Most Halloween candy contains xylitol and chocolate, which is hazardous to pets.

❌ NOT THAT: Hang decorations that can pose threats to our furry friends. Be cautious of lit candles, rubber eyeballs, fake cobwebs, and glow sticks.

👍 DO THIS: Create a safe space for your pet on trick-or-treat night to minimize stress. We recommend a quiet room stocked with their favorite toys and treats.

Let’s help our four-legged friends stay safe this spooky season. Call us with any questions!

“Your socks don’t match today…”

While there are many reasons one of our team members may wear mismatched socks (getting dressed in the dark, can’t find a match, laundry day) today was extra special.

March 21 is recognized as

March 21st is symbolic because people born with Down Syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. The karyotype of Down Syndrome chromosome looks like a pair of mismatched socks. That’s why colorful, mismatched socks have been chosen to show support. Our practice manager purchased a pair for every team member to show our support and donate to Down Syndrome Association of Delaware

Do your furry friends suffer from storm phobia? It can be difficult to watch your pet deal with stress related to loud noises, flashing lights and vibrations. Here are a few tips to help calm them down:

🌩️ Keep yourself calm. Your pets notice your emotions and body language, which can cause them to become stressed.
🌩️ Give your pets a safe hiding spot. Preferably a quiet room with few to no windows.
🌩️ Distract them by playing games, feeding them or even turning on a TV to drown out the loud noises.

Today marks ! In Japan, Akitas are considered a symbol of protection, health, happiness and long life.

The day was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the day that Hachiko, a famous member of the Akita breed, crossed the rainbow bridge to reunite with his owner. ❤️

Fun Fact: Helen Keller was the first person to bring an Akita over to the United States in 1937.

Protecting wildlife is important, but equally important is protecting ourselves and our pets. 🦊🐻 Here are some tips for preventing wildlife conflict:

➡️ Do not feed wildlife. Over time, animals lose their natural fear of humans and become accustomed to being fed.

➡️ Don’t leave pet food outside. Keeping pet food in secure containers can also help prevent wildlife from smelling their way into your yard.

➡️ Attract birds with natural foods. Adding native plants to your property provides healthy food and natural shelter in ways that bird feeders can’t.

➡️ Prevent interaction with wildlife. While small mammals (raccoons, opossums, rabbits, etc.) may not seem like they pose a threat, they can carry diseases and parasites that can seriously harm your pets.

➡️ As cities expand, it may be more likely to see coyotes, bears or even wildcats during your walks. Often these animals are frightened by loud or constant noise, so attaching bells to your pet’s collar can help prevent them from following or attempting to interact with your animal.

In honor of today we recognize three-legged pets everywhere and the people who care for them!

Pets can be born with three legs or even a spare, and sometimes amputation is the best way to improve the quality of life for dogs or cats that are affected by limb cancers, congenital challenges or injury.

We’d love to hear your three-legged love stories 👇❤️

Today is ! What can you do to observe this day?

😸 Adopt. Did you know over 3,000,000 cats enter shelters in the U.S. each year? Consider visiting a shelter when thinking about a new furry companion.

😸 Volunteer your time at a local animal shelter or rescue organization. Adoption may not always be an option but your time and skills can make a big impact for these deserving organizations.

😸 Donate to a charitable organization that helps save animal lives.
