Testimonial from Nicole Dufresne with Poppy-
“Nutrition Response testing with Dr. Martha has changed our dog Poppy’s life. It also changed our families’ lives. We came to Dr. Martha because we were concerned about Poppy’s hips and a sudden behavior change. She was diagnosed by an orthopedic vet with mild to moderate hip dysplasia and Poppy became aggressive with our 12-year-old lab. The only way to manage it was by complete separation. We initially addressed the complex behavior change with Poppy by positive reinforcement training, while having all the tests for both dogs at our regular vet. Everything came back “normal”. After our individualized plan with Martha was implemented and maintained, Poppy’s hip dysplasia is no longer symptomatic, and cannot be seen on x-rays. Also, to our surprise her aggressive behavior decreased, and we no longer have to leave the dogs separated overall.

Now, if Poppy's eyes start leaking, that’s when I know her behavioral issues will increase and something needs to be adjusted in her plan which means another trip to Dr.Martha!”

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS IN THE WATER FROM YOUR FAUCET?

METALS – HERE ARE SOME OF THEM:
ALUMINUM – Is everywhere within our environment, including the air we breathe. Aluminum is also found in many vaccines, antiperspirants, soft drink cans, foil, cookware, over-the-counter drugs (like antacids, anti-diarrheals, pain relievers), baking powder, refined foods, processed cheeses, and other products. Aluminum sulfate is added to tap water in water treatment plants.

PETS – Aluminum can be found in pet foods, water, vaccines, and metal food bowls. Too much aluminum can cause an animal to have extra itchy skin, loose stools, and a myriad of medical problems.
HUMANS - It has been linked to health problems such as decreased liver and kidney function, forgetfulness, speech disturbances, inflammation, headaches, confusion, muscle weakness, bone pain, deformities, fractures, seizures, speech problems and slow growth of children.

ARSENIC – Is a natural element in soil, rocks and groundwater in many countries including the United States, Canada, China, and Brazil. When combined with other elements, arsenic can be used to preserve wood and kill insects. Arsenic can make its way into the water supply from natural earth deposits or industrial pollution or from farming methods using pesticides and fertilizers. It is found in antibiotics fed to conventionally raised chickens. To minimize arsenic in poultry, eat organic pastured-raised eggs and chickens. Rice and to***co take up arsenic from the soil more than most other plants do.

HUMANS (PETS HAVE MANY OF THESE TOO): Arsenic poisoning can cause stomachaches, headaches, drowsiness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle cramps, numbness and tingling of extremities (hands and/or feet), skin changes, diabetes, heart and lung disease, kidney disease, confusion, developmental defects, decreased memory, dementia, POOR pregnancy outcomes, bladder and lung cancer. You can read more at the World Health Organization website, www.who.int. Bloodwork does not test for arsenic. Hair analysis for heavy metals may detect previous exposure.

MERCURY – Is found everywhere in our environment and used in many household products, industrial items including thermostat, fluorescent light bulbs, soil, our water, and vaccines. Individuals who eat a lot of fish and shellfish could have higher mercury levels.

HUMANS: - High levels can attribute to health complications such as Alzheimer’s, asthma, arthritis, autoimmune disease, chronic disease, learning disorders, lupus, bloating, heartburn, joint pain.
PETS: - High levels of Mercury can affect the following: nervous, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and reproductive systems

CADMIUM – This is extremely toxic. Commonly found in phosphate fertilizers, some industrial paints and pigments, fumes from burning waste, metal soldering and welding, cigarette smoke, evaporated milk.

HUMANS – PETS: Exposure to cadmium promotes the production of inflammatory cytokines, depletes antioxidants, harms DNA directly and disturbs the DNA repair system that helps prevent cancer.

LEAD – Lead is usually found in tap water due to lead solder in plumbing and corroded town water supply pipes. It can be found in old paint. In 1978 new guidelines were set to eliminate lead in paints and in 1996 new guidelines were created for home developers to encourage safer drinking water.
It can also be found in soil, ground water, glass, rubber products, gasoline, car exhaust fumes, canned food, hair dyes and newspaper print.

PETS: High levels of lead in animals can affect the central nervous system: mental dullness, unresponsive, or walk aimlessly. In other cases, you can have muscle twitching, paralysis of the tongue, circling and stargazing. Typically, bloodwork can detect lead levels.

CHROMIUM – You can find chromium naturally in rocks, plants, soil, volcanic dust, industrial pollution, and gases. The EPA does recommend a limit for chromium in drinking water.
Researchers have found that high amounts of chromium can lead to severe health effects such as cancer, reproductive harm and damage to the liver and kidneys in both pets and humans.

COPPER – Copper is an element that occurs naturally in plants, water, air, and soil. Mostly used to make wiring, sheet metal and plumbing materials. All living organisms (plants, animals, and humans), need a trace amount and it can be absorbed from foods, drinking, and breathing. It has been commonly used in agriculture to treat plant disease (mildew), and in water treatment and as a preservative for woods, leathers, and fabrics.

PETS: Too much copper can cause liver damage. This can be diagnosed by a liver analysis by your animal’s veterinarian.
HUMAN: People who have copper toxicity develop nausea and vomiting but other symptoms can include diarrhea, muscular weakness, and pain/burning sensation in the abdominal area.

CHEMICALS – HERE ARE SOME OF THEM:
CHLORINE – Is added to tap water to kill bad germs such as Salmonella (https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/), Campylobacter(https://www.cdc.gov/campylobacter/), and Norovirus (https://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/). Unfiltered water can expose you to dangerous chlorine vapors and chloroform gas. These gases can evaporate into the air from toilet bowls, washing your clothes or dishes or taking a hot shower or bath. One suggestion is to open windows on opposing sides of your home to cross ventilate; keeping them open 5-10 minutes a day can help remove these gases.
Chlorine poisoning can occur when you touch, swallow, or inhale chlorine. Respiratory symptoms include coughing, and difficulty breathing. Digestive symptoms could include burning in the mouth, swelling of the throat, and/or throat pain.
https://www.healthline.com/health/chlorine-poisoning (click on the link for further information on symptoms)

CHLORAMINES – Chlorine binds with organic material in water and forms chloramine. Research has shown it to be more toxic than chlorine. It is one of the major disinfectants used in public water systems (along with chlorine). Vegetables may be treated with chlorine or chloramine to delay spoilage.
Chloramine fumes can cause an individual to become congested with sneezing, sinus pressure, coughing, choking, wheezing, shortness of breath and asthma. These problems are most encountered after swimming in pools containing excess chloramines.
https://www.cdc.gov (click on the link for further information on symptoms)

GLYPHOSATE – Is an active ingredient in w**d killer products. The most well-known product is Roundup. Roundup is used in farming, in home gardens, and on lawns worldwide.
If swallowed in large amounts, it can cause nausea and vomiting and if left on the skin can cause irritation. Studies in animals show developmental effects in fetuses, such as lower body weight and problems with bones and organ growth. Any symptoms of illness or chronic disease can be caused by the build-up of glyphosate in the tissues.

POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCE (PFAS)-Fluorinated carboxylic acid (PFOA) and Fluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). They can be found in commonly used items such as non-stick cookware, pizza boxes and stain repellants. It is found in drinking water especially if near landfills and wastewater treatment plants.

Large amounts of PFAS can increase cholesterol levels, can change liver enzymes, and depress the immune system. Birds can die if exposed to the air when the owners cook with non-stick pans. https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/pfas/health-effects/index.html (To read more)

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) (update March 2023)

PFAS (Polyfluoroalkyl Substance) this man-made chemical has been used since the 1940’s. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has known the risks from PFAS since the 1990’s. PFAS are detectable in nearly all Americans.
The first time EPA was alerted to the problem of PFAS in the drinking water was 2001. In 2016 the agency issued a non-enforceable lifetime health advisory for PFOA and PFOS in the drinking water.
In March 2023 the EPA proposed new bold limits. The Biden-Harris administration announced the first ever nation drinking water standard. This proposal requires the EPA to take major steps to protect the public from PFAS pollution.
Low doses of PFAs have been linked to: (EPA update March 2023)
Suppression of the immune system
Harm development and reproductive system
increased risk of certain cancers
Increase cholesterol levels
Changes in liver enzymes
Decreased vaccine response in children
Increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant woman
Increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer
Some of the highest PFAS levels detected are Maine, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Northern New Jersey, and suburbs of New York City.
In the absence of Federal standards, states started to set their own legal limits. New Jersey was the first state to set a max contaminant level for the compound. Some other states have now set or proposed limits or guidelines for PFAS in drinking water, these states include California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, and Vermont.

Best overall filters to take out PFAS:
Longest Filter Life: Travel Berkey - Removes 100% of PFAS
Lowest Initial Cost: Zero Water - Removes 100% of PFAS
Honorable Mention: Clearly Filtered - Removes 100% of PFAS
EWG Tester Favorite: Epic Water Filter - Removes 98% of PFAS
Some other filters EPA tested:
Pur Plus 7 cup pitcher - Removes 79% of PFAS

Potential health hazards of commercial cleaning and disinfecting products

Asthma – cleaning products usually release mists, vapors, or gasses that can be irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Many industrial chemicals contained in these products (including formaldehyde and quats) have been identified as asthmagens (respiratory irritants) – which can worsen asthma or cause asthma to develop in previously healthy individuals. The risk is highest with those individuals who use spray cleaners (e.g,. air fresheners (which often contain phthalates), oven cleaners, chlorine bleach sprays, drain cleaners, glass cleaners, furniture cleaners, and citrus- and pine-based cleaners). A study published in 2007 included over 3,500 participants (who did not have asthma) across ten countries. After nine years, participants who used spray cleaners (air fresheners, glass cleaning sprays, and furniture cleaning sprays) in their home on a weekly basis had a 30%-50% increased risk of developing asthma. Another study suggests that fetal exposure to household cleaning supplies may affect respiratory health. In a series of studies, scientists determined that children born to women who frequently used cleaning supplies in their home while pregnant had a higher risk of persistent wheezing and reduced lung function. There is also risk when using multiple cleaning products at the same time. For example, mixing cleaning products that contain bleach and ammonia creates chloramine gas that may lead to severe lung damage or death.

Cancer – the Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) surveyed the ingredients in many common cleaners (liquid laundry detergents, citrus- and pine-based cleaners, air fresheners, and mold- and mildew-control products) and found that many either contain or produce (through the addition of chemicals) known carcinogens (e.g., formaldehyde and 1,4-Dioxane). A retrospective study of 1,500 women in Massachusetts was done in 2010 by the Silent Spring Institute. The results showed that women who reported the greatest use of cleaning products (the top 25%) were twice as likely to have been diagnosed with breast cancer than those reporting the least use (the bottom 25%). Note that as this report was a retrospective self-reported study, the authors noted that a limitation exists with valid associations and recall bias (e.g., the women having beliefs that chemicals and pollutants cause breast cancer may report higher usage of the cleaning products).

Reproductive or developmental problems – in animal studies, chemicals in cleaning products (including quats) contributed to reduced ovulation and fertility in females, decreased s***m count in males, and damage to developing fetuses and birth defects . In 2010, the New York Department of Health conducted a study of nearly 15,000 women and compared five occupational groups’ maternal occupations with 45 types of birth defects. The study showed a correlation between women working as maids/housekeepers/janitors and birth defects such as reduced neural tube defects and cleft palates. A study done in 2014 in Australia compared maternal and paternal exposures to solvents (e.g., benzene, chlorinated solvents, aromatics) and the risk of childhood brain tumors (CBT). The study included over 1200 children and found a positive correlation between paternal exposure to aromatic solvents (the year prior to conception) and maternal exposure to chlorinated solvents (any time before birth) and CBT. Another study completed in Sweden published in 2019 followed 718 pregnant women exposed to various endocrine disruptors found in everyday consumer products (e.g., phthalates, BPA, and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The researchers measured these chemicals in the mother’s blood during the first trimester. Some of these chemicals cross the placenta. The children were then examined at seven years of age. The children whose mothers had higher levels of these chemicals in their blood during pregnancy had lower IQ scores (particularly boys).

Allergens and irritants – painful irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs can be caused by chemicals in cleaning products. About 2.5 million people in the United States have fragrance allergies. Fragrances (which often contain phthalates) can trigger asthma attacks, headaches, and breathing difficulties. A study was done in 2009 with workers at a detergent products plant. Workers exposed to liquid enzymes were found to be at risk of developing respiratory allergies. Chlorine bleach is extremely irritating and has been linked to symptoms of obstructive lung disease and work-related asthma. Another study done in 2009 found that individuals using bleach four or more times per week were more likely than non-bleach users to experience wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Volatile fumes released during ordinary cleaning processes can contaminate the air for up to 20 minutes after use.

Chemical burns and poisoning – many household cleaners can cause severe damage when ingested or splashed directly onto the skin and eyes. In 2021, household cleaning products were implicated in 10.7% of all poison exposures compiled by the National Poison Control Call Statistics (second only to cosmetics and personal care products which were at 10.8%).

What is in commercial cleaning and disinfecting products and why do we care?

A survey was done using 1,476 professional Swiss cleaning companies. The cleaning products used by those companies contained more than 132 different chemical substances across 105 products. Up to 75% of the products contained irritant, harmful, and corrosive-labeled substances. Most reported were hazards for eyes (59%), skin (50%), and if ingested (60%).

Commercial cleaning products commonly contain synthetic fragrances, glycol ethers, surfactants, solvents, and to a lesser extent, phosphates, salts, detergents, pH-stabilizers, acids, and bases. (1)

Ingredients in fragrances are not required to be disclosed (even if they make up as much as 20% of the product), and often includes phthalates. Phthalates are a group of various artificial compounds that were originally developed in the 1930s. They are present in many commonly used items such as plastics (to make plastics flexible), solvents, personal care products, and fragrances (to make fragrances last longer). In studies with laboratory animals, phthalates have been found to be hormone disruptors. They can mimic or block female hormones, and block the hormones needed for male sexual development. They’ve also been linked to asthma and allergies. In 2000, the CDC tested 289 people and found high levels of phthalates in the blood of all the subjects tested. Phthalates also cross the placenta and have been found to decrease s***m motility and s***m concentration in men and to cause ge***al abnormalities in baby boys. (2)

Ammonia quaternary compounds (“quats”): Quats are commonly found in household products such as disinfectant sprays and wipes, and toilet bowl cleaners, as well as in some healthcare hand and body washes. They are registered with the EPA as pesticides and are antimicrobial compounds. However, it’s never been proven that using products containing quats actually reduces illness in the home. Quats are irritating to skin and to the lungs. There have been two studies that show certain quats can trigger asthma in cleaning workers (occupational asthma) or worsen existing asthma. There has been research indicating that exposure to quats can trigger reproductive issues and disrupt the endocrine system.

How can you identify if quats are in a product? The names are usually “…onium chloride” (e.g., benzalkonium chloride).

Some microbes are now becoming resistant to quats. Quat-based products are widely used for disinfecting in the livestock industry, but they are becoming less effective due to quat-resistant microbes. (3)

Testimonial from P.M.: “Since taking my cat, Bear, to AVS, his health has improved 100%. In the beginning he was very thin, and I felt like he was going to pass in a short time. Once Bear met Dr. Martha, he became a new cat in a very short time. When it is time to visit Dr. Martha for his follow-up appointments, he will go into his carrier by himself. No joke. I enjoy seeing him play as if he were a kitten again!”

The basics - cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting with conventional chemicals:

“Cleaning” should always be the first step to remove dirt and germs and is very important. This can be done with water, soap/detergent, and scrubbing. This process by itself removes dirt and most germs (e.g., viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi) and reduces the risk of infection. This must be the first step before sanitizing or disinfecting to make it easier for the chemicals in those products to kill germs. (1)

“Sanitizing” is a process which reduces germs to levels considered safe by public health codes. Clean objects and surfaces before sanitizing. Sanitizing is typically done using regular unscented household bleach and water. The bleach should be 5-9% sodium hypochlorite. Mix one tablespoon of bleach with one gallon of room temperature water. After application, allow to air dry (rinse with clean water and then allow to air dry for surfaces that may come into contact with food). This sanitizing step may not be necessary if surfaces and objects are properly cleaned after use. (2)
However, bleach is highly corrosive, and toxic to contact and to smell. When coming into contact with the skin, bleach can cause skin irritation and chemical burns. (3) Repeated exposure to bleach-based products can cause respiratory damage such as worsening asthma or cause asthma in previously healthy individuals. (4)

“Disinfecting” kills most germs on surfaces and objects. Clean objects and surfaces before disinfecting. As with sanitizing, this can be accomplished using regular unscented household bleach and water. The bleach should be 5-9% sodium hypochlorite. Mix one third cup bleach with one gallon of room temperature water. The bleach solution should remain on the surface for at least one minute before wiping (rinse with clean water and then allow to air dry for surfaces that may come into contact with food). Disinfecting can also be done with an EPA-registered disinfecting product. (5)

Considerations when using household conventional cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting products:

All of these products contain chemical ingredients. Some chemicals are skin irritants and may cause a rash, and corrosive chemicals can burn the skin or eyes. Other chemicals may cause or trigger respiratory issues such as asthma.(6) Read the product label (or the product Safety Data Sheet) for safety information before using them. Pick the right product for the job! “Cleaners” are generally less hazardous than sanitizers or disinfectants.
