Great article explaining how to maintain double coated breeds.

As the temperature rises owners of fur bearing breeds begin to realize their pets are hot. Mistakenly, many think that clipping these breeds down will help them be cooler. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
This time of year it's common to see these breeds 'blowing coat', meaning that massive amounts of undercoat are shed out at once. However, clipping is not the answer. Instead your professional groomer can remove that crazy amount of undercoat and help keep it in check year round.
This allows the coat to properly perform it's job of keeping the body cooler. The attached undercoat works like insulation keeping cooler air near the body while the guard coat reflects heat away. But when loose undercoat is not properly removed it impedes the coat from doing it's task.
Professional groomers provide so much more than a haircut. Talk to your groomer about booking an appointment for your fur bearing breed to keep them comfortable year round!

A wagging tails speaks volumes!!

Awww they want to meet, look at their wagging tails ⚠️
A wagging tail is never a good indicator of your dogs emotional state.
It can simply mean their emotional state has changed, apart from happiness and joy, that can also include changing into a fearful, anxious, angry, confused state. Tail wags are not a good indicator when deciding your dogs (or another dogs) emotions.
I know this is controversial for some to hear but very few dogs are truly dog social....many are highly selective.
They may only like their own breed.
They may only like female dogs....small brown dogs...or curly coated dogs.
They may have their own unique preference.
They have (and are ALLOWED) their own social preference....just as we have our own social preferences.

Or they may just dislike any other dog outside their/your family and friends.

Encouraging dogs to meet a dog walking down the street (even with the best of intentions) can cause some serious issues. If your dog pulls you down the road at the mere glimpse of another dog, your dog is likely in a highly aroused emotional state. Allowing them to meet others in that state is habit forming and rewarding....so they WILL repeat it.
Other dogs can respond badly to over aroused dogs.

Why not just let two dogs meet ?
There can be lifelong consequences to "just letting them meet"
Reactivity and/or aggression.
Anxiety and stress
Injury.
A lessening of the strong bond they may have with you as they can no longer trust your judgement.
Why not take a bit of time and lessen the chance of these serious (and sometimes life altering) issues occur in the first place.

So.... meeting any strange or unknown dogs on a walk, JUST because there is another dog there is something I highly discourage.

However....
There are some circumstances where you may have to introduce dogs. So these are a few tips which have been written about before (separately) in graphics but I have squeezed them together for a clearer reference.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is only concentrating on their own dogs emotional state and not watching the rising stress in the other dog involved....
These cause those "Out of the blue" reactions....

They weren't out of the blue, they were just missed.

🔵Micro meetings are essential.
🔵Parallel walks are a must.
🔵Avoid face to face.
🔵Keep your voices light and happy.
🔵DON'T make a dog sit or lie down.
🔵Tension creates more tension so keep those leads loose.
🔵NEUTRAL territory....not your yard, your house or even your immediate area around your house....go somewhere else.

Biggest tip though (as mentioned) watch the body language of both dogs.....IGNORE the tail wags and watch the whole body and all the little tell tale signs given.

If it doesn't feel right...it likely isn't.
Trust your own intuition.

ALWAYS advocate for your own dog no matter how "friendly" you are told the other dog is.

Happy National Adopt a pet day!!

Today is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day!
To help with this, our Monday outing volunteer took out 3 yesterday so you can learn a little more about each of them:

Thomas: Thomas is a gentle sweetheart who is sensitive and kind. He also loves kids and riding in cars. After the park, we were soaked so we took a trip back to our house to change clothes. Thomas wasn't sure how to hop up in the car so I just picked him up and put him in and he loved it. He calmly looked out the window and eventually slept for a good 20 minutes before getting to our house. He enjoyed walking around by the woods and smelling all of the new smells. He hung out with my husband while we got warm clothes, they're friends for life after the pets. Thomas watched out the window at him as we drove away. He's a sweetheart! Once he remembered our son was in the car with him and he'd get snuggled, he was happy again. He's such a calm little guy and slept all the way back to Northwoods. If you want a peaceful little empath, you'll have to meet little sweetheart Thomas. His kind eyes look right into our soul!

Vader: He is such a fun loving goofball! He somehow knew which car was ours and walked right up to it and sat like a perfect gentleman. He is a world class traveler and his favorite part of the ride was sticking his head out the window feeling the mist on his face. He's quite the free spirit. We laughed as we looked in the side mirrors and saw his jowls flying around. He's silly! He loved the walk we took at the park and was curious about everything--especially bunnies but didn't bark or try and chase. He also loved following our little guy around the climbing structure. Vader is also excellent on the leash and loves to sit on command. Vader also realized that he really likes fast food drive-thrus not because of the food but because he can get all kinds of attention through the window! He's very social and loves everyone. If you're looking for a laid back goofball that loves adventure and people, Vader is your guy!

Karina: Little pup Karina is adorable too! We got to meet her and her brother the day they made the trek from Kentucky and she was precious then but she's even more precious now as we continue to see her. It was like a little reunion today! She's very affectionate and loved riding co-pilot on our son's lap and supplied endless kisses. We took her to a pet store where she charmed everyone. In fact, one of the customers (a Northwoods fan) loved her so much that she bought her a doggie treat cookie! After the pet store, she went to a home store with us to make a return and she charmed everyone there as well. She's very confident and loves everyone. If you're looking for a sweetie pie baby girl who loves to go out and about with you, you must come and meet Karina! As a side note, if you're looking for a young male, Karina's brother, Rourke, is precious and perfect as well. Either would be an amazing!

There is a huge misconception among pet owners that pets do not benefit from grooming in the winter months. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

1. Pets will be cold if groomed in the winter - This is a very common misconception especially with fur bearing breeds. Dogs and cats keep warm (and cool) through thermoregulation. Not being groomed means that dead undercoat can become packed. This prevents the coat from properly functioning by holding warm air near the body.
Keeping your pet on schedule means that your professional groomer can keep your pets coat in working condition.

2. He/she will be warmer if the coat is longer - This misconception most commonly after hair bearing breeds. But the truth is an inch or two of longer coat makes no difference in the pets ability to thermoregulate. In fact, longer coat means a larger potential for matting, especially if not on a regular schedule. Many pet owners use coats, jackets, or sweaters for their pets which adds to this potential.

3. Whether a packed coat or a matted coat, both lead to skin problems. A coat full of dead undercoat or matts means that the skin cannot properly slough and shed leading to scaly build up and/or dandruff.

Talk to your professional groomer about keeping your schedule year round. Even in the winter months!
