Ellie, the mastiff!
Ellie is the first participant in our new Trick Dog course. She is shown here with her handler, Sue, navigating a set of homemade weave poles. These polls are spaced a little further apart than is typical, because of Ellie’s size.
When you teach your dog tricks, you can showcase their agility and creativity, while also providing them with mental stimulation and strengthening the bond between you.
This is a five week course, and we will be running it again. Watch for announcements later in the summer. If you enjoy Ellie’s success, please like and share!
This video shows Roger, walking calmly with handler Mackenzie, about 25 feet from a group class. When Roger came to us two months ago, he was reactive to dogs, and this would not have been possible for him. A foundation of engagement exercises and obedience, followed by redirection techniques and several sessions of counter conditioning have given Roger a chance for a more comfortable life. It is wonderful to see him so calm and happy.
Not all problems can be fixed, but with knowledgeable training and diligent handling, most problems can be improved and made manageable. If you’re looking for help with your reactive dog, please reach out through Facebook or give us a call today!
Kaeleigh and Nova
Check out this amazing coordination between these two. Nova is completely focused on Kaeleigh, and their heeling walk, turns, and pace changes are in perfect coordination. The more you work with your dog, the stronger the bond will be between you.
Belle!
Here is Belle conquering her fear of new objects and demonstrating admirable mastery over Cavaletti poles. These poles can be arranged in a variety of layouts, to help the trainer work different muscle groups, or just provide a cool down exercise. The platform provides a comfortable ending to this mini obstacle course.
Here is Arya (a Tamaskin puppy) showing off her impulse control - there are yummy treats on each paw and she doesn’t take them until being given permission!
And, this is beind done while other dogs walk all around her! Great Trick -Arya!
The rain held off for our group class today! Such good pups, working on their polite leash walking skills, despite all the distractions. That’s why we call is distraction class! Held Sundays at 9:00 am, for graduates of our foundation obedience program, this class helps teams increase focus, engagement, and adherence to commands. Plus it’s FUN! If you enjoy these clips, please like and share this video!
Say hello to sweet Belle! Belle is a cautious girl, who conquered the puppy tunnel today! She enjoyed it so much, she kept going back for more, while still demonstrating her characteristically cautious nature. We offer the puppy tunnel as an exercise in confidence building.
When you help your dog build confidence, the result is a secure dog who is comfortable in new situations, resilient to stress, and better behaved in general. Dogs and their humans share excitement with each completed task or conquered obstacle. This clip shows Belle’s happiness when she successfully navigates the puppy tunnel. Watch Don and his puppy, Odin, demonstrating the first step towards rear end awareness. This exercise helps puppies learn to pivot their rear end, a useful skill in polite walking on leash, particularly in the difficult left turns. Odin is a delightful mix of several breeds, the most significant by far (63%) being great Pyrenees. Odin also has Australian Shepherd, mini Australian shepherd, golden retriever, border collie, collie, American Eskimo and Chesapeake bay retriever! What a wonderful mix of breeds and traits!
Another fun distraction class! In this exercise teams pass through a gauntlet of toys, while working on focus and engagement. This is challenging, especially for puppies! This exercise can be made more difficult by lengthening the gauntlet, narrowing the gauntlet, and even adding bits of food among the toys.
Distraction class is available to Canine Cadre clients that have completed a foundation obedience program. This is a judgement free zone where teams work on maintaining and strengthening focus and engagement. If you are interested in learning more about our programs, send us a message, or give us a call!
And yet another puppy builds confidence in the puppy tunnel! Shown below is Dax, a sweet tempered, laid back, four month old German Shepherd puppy, with handler, Jonathan. Dax has been training with us for just three weeks, and already demonstrates confidence and lots of potential. We look forward to his continued development. Stay tuned! If you enjoy the short video of sweet Dax, please share!
Sunday morning distraction class is a great way to start the day with old friends and new friends! Today we practiced approaching a neutral dog. Acting the part of the neutral dog was Schatzi, who is pretty much the ultimate neutral dog, because, well, she is a stuffed animal. Schatzi looks real enough that she fools most dogs, at least initially. Watch each team as the dogs investigate Schatzi, in the short video below.

Gunnar was introduced to the puppy tunnel this morning at puppy social - I think this is his favorite activity to date! It certainly was fun for us to watch him as his confidence is growing by leaps and bounds!
