Meet Hope! She originally came to us when she was just 2 weeks old. As a small lamb she had gotten stuck behind a fence and became very cold. She had made some improvements at home, but was brought in to the exotics department for partial paralysis and seizures. She was hospitalized with us for a while with medications, laser therapy, and physical therapy. Hope is a lucky girl with a very committed owner who never gave up on her and continued her physical therapy at home after she was discharged from the hospital. She has even been going to hydrotherapy! After all that hard work over the last 3 months, Hope was able to walk on her own into her recheck appointment last week!
Swipe to see Hope’s progress from being unable to stand, to being able to hold herself up, to her first time in a harness, to running down the hospital hallway!

This common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) came to us from for an ingested fishing hook. She had surgery today to have the hook removed and she can now be released back to the wild to lay all her eggs!
We unfortunately see many native wildlife species every year with injuries due to entrapment in or ingestion of fishing line, hooks, and netting. Some ways we can prevent wildlife injuries and deaths caused by improperly discarded fishing line and hooks include:
• Dispose of broken or leftover fishing line, hooks, lures, or bait properly
• Never release fish who still have hooks in them
• If you find an animal who is entangled in fishing line, bring them to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator or wildlife veterinarian
• If you unintentionally hook an animal while fishing, remove the hook if it is possible to do so safely. If you are unable to, contact animal control or a permitted wildlife rehabilitator.
• Organize a clean-up event at a local fishing spot or shoreline
• Share your knowledge with family and friends!

Happy World Turtle Day! This day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
We love all turtles and tortoises, but one of our favorites is the Spotted Turtle! The Spotted Turtle (Clemmys guttata) is a small freshwater turtle which occupies a diversity of shallow wetlands. They have a black shell with yellow, yellow-orange, or cream spots. These turtles can be found in 19 states. In Ohio, they are threatened due to habitat destruction and development as well as declining water quality and illegal black market poaching.
Through the Wild4Ever Foundation, we are proud to be a part of the Save and Protect Ohio Turtle Diversity (SPOTD) committee. The SPOTD committee works to help increase survivorship of turtle hatchlings, repatriate populations of this Ohio Threatened species in protected habitats within Northeast Ohio, increase recruitment of these animals into the adult populations, and educate the public and involve local academics through research.

We are happy to announce that we have received the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Serotype 2 (RHDV-2) Vaccine!

Recently the State of Ohio has approved the USDA's recommendation for emergency use authorization for an experimental Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Vaccine. Because this disease is highly contagious and fatal, and is believed to be prevented by proper vaccination, we are now offering this vaccine for our rabbit patients.

Your rabbit can now be vaccinated at NorthCoast Bird & Exotic Specialty Hospital against RHDV-2 if he/she is up to date on an annual examination with us and has not shown any signs of disease within the last 2 weeks. We will be using the Medgene vaccine which includes an initial injection followed by a booster in 21 days.

For more information about this disease, please visit: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-health/rabbit-hemorrhagic-disease

The cost for both of the vaccines and cursory physical examinations is $132. This will be paid on the day of the initial vaccination. If your rabbit is past due for their annual examination, this will also have to be updated on the day of the initial vaccination at an additional expense.

Call the clinic at (330) 825-2434 today to schedule your rabbit’s RHDV-2 vaccine appointment!

For pet rabbits, we recommend early spaying and neutering. For males, neutering goes a long way to help curb the development of objectionable or aggressive behaviors. For females, in addition to helping with behavior, spaying can prevent the development of endometriosis or uterine cancer. These are common and serious medical conditions of female rabbits that can be prevented by early spaying of your pet.

If you notice your pig scratching a lot or having dry, flaky, cracking, red patches, or lesions, bring him in for a visual examination. Skin problems are uncomfortable for your pet and might be the symptom of a more serious disease.

1 Like = 1 Piney Boop ❤

Porcupines give a lot of warning before entering into a prickly situation. One of the olfactory signals they employ is an extremely pungent odor that tells predators they’ve raised their quills and are not afraid to use them!

The chemical compound that creates the stink, R-delta-decalactone, is only unique to porcupines—perfect for associating the warning smell with sharp quills. Smell ya later, predators. ✌
