RBARI is a leading no-kill animal shelter dedicated to providing second chances, safe refuge, medical care, and forever homes to local homeless dogs and cats in NJ. (RBARI), the leading no-kill animal shelter in Northern New Jersey, is dedicated to second chances by providing safe refuge and essential medical and behavioral care, along with new forever homes to New Jersey’s homeless and abused dog

s and cats. Focusing on animals with the greatest need, RBARI is especially committed to those often rejected, including seniors; urgent medical cases; and surrenders. RBARI regularly pulls from local animal control facilities, thus placing an emphasis on “local first", allowing us to impact the rate of euthanasia as well as reduce the homeless population. RBARI also supports the community, assisting in animal welfare emergencies and working with partner organizations to provide low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for communities in need. We also work with our TNR partners to help decrease the overpopulation and stop the cycle of homelessness and abuse too many animals suffer.

Meet Faith!

Faith is a sweet friendly 3 year old Frenchie who came to us partially paralyzed. Luckily, just before she was scheduled for an MRI and possible surgery, her steroid treatment kicked in and she started walking on her own!

She is still a bit wobbly and with IVDD there is always a chance of recurrence or progression. She is on very strict crate rest right now as she recovers to help her spinal cord heal and is looking for a calm foster to adopt him where that will continue. No stairs, jumping off furniture, or rough play for this delicate girl who has no idea anything is wrong with her and definitely will try to do all those things in her excitement.

We are looking for an experienced Frenchie person for her (they are known for a host of complicated medical issues- prepare for many many vet visits) to commit to her unconditionally for life.

Please submit an application to meet her at RBARI.org/dogs

RBARI Rescue Warrior Spotlight ✨

Emily decided to host a lemonade stand in her neighborhood on one of those hot summer days.

After perfecting her homemade lemonade, Emily made signs and told everyone that the proceeds will be going to RBARI! The neighborhood came out in droves for some refreshing lemonade, and now Emily has come down to the shelter to deliver the amazing proceeds!

Thank you, Emily! The juice was definitely worth the squeeze! 🍋

Meet Herbie!

This sweet boy spent his life in a puppy mill being used for breeding, but he’s not as timid as most of the mill survivors we see and already walking on a leash and soaking up all the attention he can get!

He’s about 6 years old and we were told he’s a Havanese, but he’s 22lbs and much larger than one so we suspect he might be mixed with some other small terrier possibly. He will likely need some work and patience with housebreaking and getting used to a real home for the first time. He likes other dogs especially girls and would benefit from a home with another compatible doggie friend to help him be less anxious as he settles in.

Please submit an application to meet our little love bug at RBARI.org/dogs

RBARI Rescue Warrior Spotlight ✨

Kasey reached out to RBARI a few weeks ago and wanted to work on a donation drive for us for his project and community service with The Mahwah High School.
He created a flyer for donations and sent it to friends and family - and of course, they came through for Kasey!

He collected lots of great items our shelter needs. We appreciate all of his hard work and dedication to the animals at our shelter. They might not be able to say it, but we can: Thank you! ♥️ 🐾

At 13-years-old, Bobo’s life has been turned upside down…

…but, we have faith that Bobo’s future is bright, better than before, with YOU by his side! Bob is a senior shih tzu mix who we opened our doors to weeks ago. Sadly, the family decided to rehome on their own, and Bobo did not do well, placed in an unsuitable home where he was handled too roughly.

Despite the confusion and trauma, Bobo has remained so sweet with his people. He finally has arrived to RBARI, ready for a second chance at his best life. Bobo was treated for a heart condition without proper diagnostics, so he will now be going to the vet for an echocardiogram to ensure we treat his condition correctly. Bobo suffers from chronic allergies and ear infections, which are being diagnosed and treated.

What Bobo needs MOST right now is a home of his own! Please share and visit rbari.org to adopt.

Can’t adopt, but Bobo’s story touched your heart? Are you a senior lover like the rest of us? Please consider supporting Bobo and our Senior Animal Fund at rbari.org/saf.

We can’t continue our essential work with seniors without your support. At RBARI, our senior rescues make up over a third of our rescue cases and are integral to who we are and the work we do. They also remain with us longer, the reality being they cannot compete with younger pups who quickly get adopted.

Bobo exemplifies the critical importance of this fund. Together we can provide the comforts of medical care and homes to even more seniors within our community, like Bobo. Please share to help Bobo find his second chance!

RBARI Rescue Warrior Spotlight ✨

We were lucky enough to have Seth stop by the shelter with a donation check that he raised for us after learning about giving back at his Hebrew school!

Seth‘s mom works with Roe, a RBARI board member, so he is familiar with RBARI and our mission. His mom said rather than donate back to the school, he wanted to share his collection with the animals at the shelter ❤️ He asked lots of really great questions about our work, and hopes to continue collecting donations for us in the future.

We are so thankful to know amazing kids like you, Seth! Thank you for supporting the animals and RBARI! ♥️ 🐾

Update!  Tiny Valerie has survived carbon monoxide poisoning!

After being freed from the engine of a running car, 6-month-old Valerie was rushed to the nearest vet hospital, struggling to breathe from the carbon monoxide in the engine.  Valerie was placed in an oxygen chamber overnight, and by this morning, she was SO much brighter.

Valerie is now off oxygen, walking around and eating well.  Her vitals are improving.  Our little miracle will continue to be monitored, but with thanks to your quick response, we were able to save Valerie!

Kitten season is a challenging time in rescue, and by the end of the summer, our resources – including adopters, fosters, supplies, shelter space, and funding – are stretched to the limit.  BUT, we can continue to respond to desperate kittens like Valerie because of YOU, our incredible RBARI rescue community.

We thank you, and Valerie thanks you as she promises to live her best kitten life in your honor!  Visit rbari.org to foster, adopt or find out more about how you can help.

Meet Miloh!

Yet another doodle looking for a home with the same story: purchased from an Amish puppy mill and surrendered when he turned out to be more work and expense than expected.

He may look like a cuddly stuffed animal, and he will cuddle for sure, but not until he’s been properly exercised and tired out for the day. He is a high energy fun active pup with a high maintenance coat that requires regular grooming.

He’s very friendly and good natured, likes other dogs, and is looking to be a permanent family member in a home with the time and energy for him. He’s 35lbs and shouldn’t get too much bigger, a mini Berne doodle, and has been neutered and updated on shots.

**At this time, the application process is closed as we review those who have already applied.

Urgent Rescue in Progress‼️

6 month old Valerie was found stuck in the engine compartment of a running car…

After being freed, Valerie was rushed to the nearest vet, in desperate need of oxygen after breathing in toxic engine fumes.

Slumpy and lethargic, this sweet girl will now be getting the care she needs. She wasn’t chipped, and her only chance of receiving the lifesaving care she requires is us. That’s why we need your help.

Please consider donating for Valerie’s care as she receives the urgent care she needs, while also receiving a full medical work up to make sure she can live the long, healthy, loved life all animals deserve. Thank you ♥️ 🐾

Meet Marvin & Jerry!

Marvin and Jerry are adorable, fun, playful shih tzu brothers that are about 3 years old.

They were recently found wandering the city streets and ended up in a crowded shelter with their lives on the line. Though they’ve had a rough couple weeks they’ve found comfort in the one thing that has remained the same; their relationship with each other. They truly are two Golden Retrievers trapped in a gremlins’ body! They love to wrestle and play with toys and tennis balls. The boys are so sweet and will always come back to their person for cuddles and kisses after a good romp in the yard.

Marvin (aka Marvin the Martian) has the most ridiculous underbite that makes his tongue perpetually protrude from his mouth.

Jerry looks slightly less comical (he’s the larger one with the darker face) and with just the tip of his tongue sticking out at you.

Please submit an application if you would like to adopt these 2 boys at rbari.org/dogs

Small Animal Fosters Needed❗️We have NO SPACE to welcome anymore small animals in need!

Meet Arthur & Leonard - two pen-mates who we think would make a great pair to bring home!

Arthur and Leonard are two young boys who love spending time with each other eating veggies.

Arthur is extremely sweet and is good about handling and spending time on our teams laps. Leonard is happy as long as food is involved 😂

Meet playful Roberto!

This scruffy 8 month old doodle came to us with a chain leash stuck around his neck that had to be cut off 😞

He’s a shy guy at first who didn’t have the best start and wasn’t socialized much, but once he comes out of his shell he turns into a playful energetic pup. He loves other dogs and would make a great playmate for another active pup. He’s 35lbs but too thin, and will likely be 45-50lbs full grown.

He does NOT have the nonshedding curly poodle coat and would not be suitable for allergy sufferers, but we think his wiry terrier fur makes him extra adorable!

Please submit an application to meet Roberto at RBARI.org/dogs

This story is tough: 12.5 year old cats returned to RBARI…But we know there’s hope!

Tiggy and Copper were sadly brought back to RBARI at after being adopted as kittens here so many years ago. These boys have been together for their entire lives so we know they’d be happiest in a loving home where they can live out their golden days together.

Although Copper tends to be a little shy around new people, once he sees Tiggy greeting people with headbutts and purrs he’s soon to follow. He has the most unique curly fur pattern on his head and a coat that is as soft as a bunny’s. He spends most of his time napping the day away in his comfy cat bed, but bring out the catnip and mouse toys and he’s ready to start playing like a kitten!

Tiggy loves rolling around in a big pile of catnip just as much as his brother, but what he really wants is a nice warm lap to curl up in. If you’re having a bad day, he’s sure to put a smile on your face when he cuddles up with you or comes to greet you with his adorable old-man meows.

Tiggy and Copper are currently living in a free-roam room with a few other kitties, and we think they’d do great in a home with other animals given the right introduction. Come and meet this wonderful pair, and we know you’ll fall in love!

Two is better than one - adopt Budgie and Pigeon together!

These girls came to us as teeny tiny bottle babies that had lost their momma and were struggling to survive. With round the clock bottle feedings and lots of care from their dedicated foster mom, both girls grew big and strong! They’re both as sweet and social as can be. Both girls are around 3 months old and more than ready to find their forever home together.

Hit by a car and left with a shattered leg, Tiger Lilly is in desperate need of surgery❗️

It was a horrific scene – Tiger Lilly escaped the home she was staying in and ran into the road, being struck by a car. Incredibly, this petite, 6-year-old terrier survived, but she was broken and in pain.

Tiger Lilly ended up in animal control without care. She was suffering from a broken leg with no one able to take responsibility for the extensive medical care she needed. Tiger Lilly was confused and alone until her RBARI rescue team – including YOU – made the promise to give Tiger Lilly the lifesaving emergency care and love she needed to survive.

We rushed Tiger Lilly to the hospital, where she was stabilized and found to have a broken front radius and ulna. She is undergoing orthopedic surgery tomorrow, and needs YOUR help! She is being kept comfortable with pain medication and a splint in the meantime.

Tiger Lilly will be looking for a foster / foster to adopt home. Please apply today at rbari.org, and please share!

Before she found RBARI, Tiger Lilly was in pain and frightened, having no place to belong and no one to care for her. She adores her people, always wanting attention and to be with you . Please help us to give Tiger Lilly the medical care she urgently needs, so that she can experience the joy of being truly cared for and part of a forever family.

Linus had a great outing with one of our staff members! He got to see the country side, visit their house, and even visit a museum along his hike to Kaaterskill falls!

Linus has been at the shelter for a year and half, and is still looking for his special forever home. He is looking for someone patient who will give him the space he needs to be comfortable in a new home. He will probably need an adult household with no other dogs, as most other dogs scare him, but he does feel ok with some calmer dogs on walks that don’t pay him much attention. Once you get to know him, he’s a happy boy who loves to walk but isn’t afraid to tell you when he doesn’t like something.

Linus is approaching 10 years old, and isn’t getting any younger. Let’s help Linus find his special home to enjoy his golden years!

To apply to adopt Linus, please submit an application at rbari.org/dogs

Meet Katie!

Katie is an adorable, timid but sweet smaller cattle dog mix, full grown at about 25lbs and 18 months old. She’s very sweet and we haven’t seen a mean bone in her body, but a skittish girl easily startled and needs continued socialization to new people and places in a positive way. She likes other dogs and seems to warm up faster around them so a home with a more confident compatible doggie friend may help her come out of her shell.

Please submit an application for an appointment to meet Katie at RBARI’s.org/dogs

An AMAZING update for Faith…guess who’s walking now?!

Faith is seeking a foster / foster to adopt home!  Please share!

When we met Faith, she had lost the ability to walk due to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).  At the time she needed help the most, she had found herself alone in a shelter.  We rushed Faith to Oradell Animal Hospital, quickly mobilizing resources to get her an MRI and emergency disc surgery.

Just before Faith was to be prepped for her MRI and surgery…she began walking on her own!!!  It appears the steroids that had been administered kicked in, and our determined girl pulled herself up and tentatively began to walk.

Faith is still being closely monitored, the hope being that she will recover with 6-8 weeks of strict crate rest and steroids.   She is a 3-year-old, super sweet and spirited Frenchie.  Please visit rbari.org/dogs to apply to foster / adopt our beautifully inspirational girl.

Thank you for helping Faith heal, as she starts a new life.  Your support has provided her with medical care and a warm place to heal her broken body.  Now, let’s share to find this girl a home!

Meet Misty!

At just a little over a year old, young tiny Misty is full of curiosity and enjoys being on the go. She is always eager for her time to free roam our small animal cottage. This petite girl loves head pets and would do very well with another bunny companion.

Each animal in our care takes to shelter life differently. For a young active girl like Misty, shelter life has not been the easiest. We always try our best to help keep Misty happy at the shelter, but what would help her thrive more than anything right now is a home environment where she has the freedom to hop around and explore. That is the life we would love to see her have!

To apply to adopt or foster Misty, please submit an application at rbari.org/smalls ❤️

Meet our sweet boy, Jethro 🧡 At not even two years old, he has already been through so much - and at our shelter so long now😭😭

He was surrendered to RBARI in April of last year when his former pet parent determined that they were unable to afford his care moving forward. As is sadly common with many male cats, Jethro was suffering from recurring urinary blockages. We were finally able to remedy the issue with a specialized surgery, but as a precaution he will need to remain on a urinary care diet.

Shortly after his arrival to the shelter, we found that the environment is incredibly stressful for Jethro. Especially given that he will likely prefer to be your one and only. Thankfully one of our wonderful and dedicated fosters has been able to provide that for him until he finds his forever home.

Initially he seemed to be a bit more aloof, but as time has gone on he has become more comfortable and affectionate with his foster mom. He is absolutely full of energy and loves to play. Fuzzy mice and wand toys are among his favorite. He also loves spending his time looking out of the window at the local wildlife and passersby.

Although Jethro is adored by his foster mom, it is not necessarily the right time for her to adopt. So we are hoping to find him a loving home that he can truly call his own. If you think that that home might be yours, please do not hesitate to submit an application at RBARI.org/cats
