I am going to post every day until my Renata appears, and I will go out to look for you. She has a joy in her skin that needs to be bathed with a special shampoo, and every day she takes her medications. Please, I beg you, return her to me. 😔

This is the second dog in the last two weeks that we’ve had come in to our hospital with this type of bone stuck around it’s mandible. Separate companies but the EXACT same design.

Please do NOT buy this type of bone for your pup! It’s not worth the risk. Luckily for this patient, our technician was able to wiggle it free but our previous patient was under general anesthesia for nearly a half hour while we went through every tool in our arsenal to saw through both sides of the bone safely.
Both dogs are lucky that they did not end up with lacerations or broken teeth.

Marketers and those looking to make a sale aren't going to tell you something you don't want to hear. So they sugarcoat and use euphemisms to make scary, painful things sound innocuous. Let's be clear. There's no magic at play here.

These devices use electric current, with the intention of hurting or scaring your dog in an attempt to curb behavior. They are SUPPOSED to hurt. That's how they work.

And, there's a lot of research on this topic. A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, concluded “there is no credible scientific evidence to justify electronic collar use and the use of spray collars or electronic fences for dogs.” Learning shouldn't hurt.

Let's work to educate and dispel some myths about shock collars. Read my post here: https://rescuedbytraining.com/2023/02/27/5-shock-collar-myths/

Thank you for this Dog Communication!!

All of the rest of the family (2 dogs and 4 humans) are in the sitting room but the puppy has chosen to go in the kitchen (two rooms away) all on her own to sleep on the Big Dog Bed. It shows how secure she feels to not need to be with us all. She feels safe as we’ve never excluded her- never put her in a crate in another room etc or left her alone to get upset at night. She sleeps with me on the bed at night, she has as much cuddles and company (from humans and Sylvi as she wants) all day and the end result is that she feels secure, she feels safe and confident as she’s formed a secure attachment. There’s no need to ‘start as you mean to go on’ with puppies and leave them to cry or exclude them. Just let them be fully part of your family and give them choices and the time to develop emotionally without stress. Really, all they want is to be fully integrated into your family and to feel secure. When they feel secure they can then cope with their own company, gradually and at their own pace. (Puppy is 8 weeks old and has been with me in foster and hand reared since she was 8 days old)

We need to stop "Training an Alternate Behavior."

This technique needs to go the way of Negative Punishment and Time-Outs, and no longer be an option in our tool kits.

Why?

First of all, having to train an alternate behavior means we failed at preventing the problem in the first place. If a dog can't calmly greet a visitor in whatever position is comfortable to the dog, then he still needs help. Teaching them to sit or "four on the floor" instead of jump is a band-aid.

More importantly, training an alternate behavior is not addressing the underlying emotional issue. It treats dogs like robots, who can be reprogrammed to do a new action in place of an old, without regard to their own emotional experience.

A dog that jumps on a visitor has an emotional need that is more appropriately met by their caretaker. Instead of training the behavior, focus on the dog and the need they are communicating. Be there for your dog. Call them to you and help them regulate so they learn they can come to you to meet the need, rather than taking it out on the object of their excitement.

Even better, we can get better at recognizing and meeting our dog's emotional needs throughout the day/week/month so they are not over-the-top when something interesting is happening. As they trust their needs will be met, and as we get better at meeting them, they will be calmer in exciting, overwhelming, and scary situations.

EDIT: I didn't expect this to blow up quite this much. I truly appreciate the discussion and apologize if my delivery was too blunt! Also, I'm editing my post for hashtags! I'm old and forget these things :)
