What is the most underrated drill in the barrel race?

A small circle. Emphasis on small.

As trainers, our time is typically spent with other professional trainers and high level competitors. With that said, it’s easy to look past the simple, yet difficult task of loping a small circle.

It seems that the majority of barrel racers don’t lope small circles. Often times they are unable to get their horses to do this maneuver. Rather. the horse or the rider doesn’t have the needed body control to perform this task. Outside of skill, they sometimes they don’t posses the strength either.

Think about it from outside the box. If you are training for a strongman competition, would you be lifting heavy or distance running?

If you only lope big circles how can you expect to run small circles?

The physical training of those muscle groups is important.

Unfortunately, many of us ride horses that are not broke or responsive enough to do these controlled maneuvers. Unfortunately still, we don’t necessarily know they aren’t "broke".

Ride with more skilled riders. Learn more about body control. Learn about body mechanics. If you want to win, step up to the plate and master the fundamentals.

Little bit of showmanship practice for timex from a couple weeks ago. He’s such a good boy and remembers his job very well.

Yesterday we went to a roping and took as many as would comfortably fit in our stock trailer. They don’t get better staying at home!

If you aren’t sure if your horse is ready to be hauled to town, ask yourself two questions. Can they get on the trailer? And, can they stand tied without breaking their halter or the fence/trailer? If you’ve got those two things then you might consider starting to expose them.

One thing to consider if you, ”feel bad” leaving your horse tied for long periods of time…what would they be doing otherwise? Probably standing in their pen doing absolutely nothing, learning absolutely nothing.

Tying will help them learn to be patient and a horse learning to be patiently tied might be one of the most important skills a horse can learn.

I’ll leave you with this, and it will likely ruffle some feathers…we don’t follow the idea of tie them for 3 minutes the first day, then 4, then 5, etc. In our opinion it teaches a horse to, “hold their breath”. Instead of learning patience they learn to hold onto anxiety for longer and longer. You’re building their anxiety muscle instead of their patience muscle.

Same with trailer rides. Our preference for a horses first trailer ride is about 2 hours. Most of them can’t stay worried for that long so they learn to relax without us interfering in their learning process. Sometimes as a horse is learning to be patient and relax, every time we engage with them we restart the anxiety.

Haul them early and often! Feed and water them tied up and LET THEM LEARN to be patient. Stop getting in their way when they are working through things.

Riding ba****ck can be a great exercise to help with kids’ balance.

…And it was noon, and darkness covered the whole land…😱

Ok, that's maybe a wee bit melodramatic, particularly now that I'm in Florida.🤔😂

BUT, for all my friends living with the very real doom that is Winter, the end of DST is painful.

While I do enjoy having light in the am, I hate swapping all over for Daylight Saving Time. Mostly because it’s just a big mind….game. In the spring you lose an hour and feel like a truck hit you, then in the winter you “get it back,” but basically end up with a day that ends at 3pm. Ugh.

Dodger came a long way on his ride the other day. From being afraid of the wind and everything that moved to walking calmly on a loose rein. There is hope yet😂

11/09/2022

And the same goes for timex.

11/09/2022

Tried some desensitizing since dodger is so spooky out on the roads and trails. It seems it’s just the outside that scared him. Good to know.

Janet’s first time riding timex confidently in a couple years.

09/18/2022

We have been working on dodgers stop the last few days. He’s picking it up very well. I want him to have an easy time where no one has to pull on his face since he wears a hackamore

This is my client Janet riding dodger confidently for the first time since she brought him home a few years ago. She’s doing so well even through a good shake 🫣
