Meet Maybell, Maybell is a 7 month old English Springer Spaniel that came in for a cheat grass removal and won the hearts of the staff here at Eastern Oregon Animal Health. We removed a grass awn from her left ear and from all of her paws. Maybell is June pet of the month.

The arrival of warmer weather means more time outside for you and your pets! But even in your own back yard, there are some potential hazards that could get in the way of the fun. Don't let that happen with these tips to keep your pets safe from outdoor hazards:
* Store all fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, rodenticides and insecticides in their original packaging and away from pets. Use rodenticides only in locations pets can't access.
* Cover or remove outdoor food bowls, water dishes, pet toys and bird baths before any applications of chemicals.
* Do not let your pets in the yard while applying chemicals. Wait until chemicals have dried and even up to four days after application before allowing a pet into the area. Pets who lick their paws after walking on treated areas can be poisoned.
* Dogs can be attracted to slug bait that contains metaldehyde. Signs of poisoning include tremors, seizures, shaking, vomiting, hyper-salivation, rapid heart rate, and abdominal pain. If your pet ingests slug bait, contact your veterinarian immediately.
* Never use flea medications intended for a dog on a cat instead. It is important to use only flea and tick products specifically designed for cats, and to administer the proper dosage.
***Never*** apply 45-65% permethrin "spot-on" products to cats, even in small amounts. Highly concentrated permethrin can be extremely toxic to cats. If you have both dogs and cats in your household, you should be aware that using a permethrin "spot-on" product on a dog may cause illness or death in a household cat.
* Compost can contain bacteria that, if ingested by pets, can cause vomiting and diarrhea, as well as possibly tremors and seizures. Keep your pets away from compost piles.
* Ingestion of even small amounts of certain plants (for example, rhododendron, azalea, oleander, lily, or yew) can be harmful or fatal to a pet. You may want to review our list of poisonous plants at: https://www.oregonvma.org/care-health/companion-animals/health-safety/poisonous-plants

Meet Loca, this sweet heart was brought in because she was not wanting to bear any weight on her front right leg. After radiographs Dr. Percifield found that Loca had a comminuted fracture of her right humerus. After discussing the treatment options with her owner, we decided the best course of action was to remove her front right leg. She did great through surgery and has made a speedy recovery. Loca is Eastern Oregon Animal Health’s pet of the month for April.

Not every day starts out like today, Dr. Percifield was called to do an emergency C-Section and delivered 5 puppies. Although some may think all we do is play with puppies and kittens, today the staff here at Eastern Oregon Animal Health took full advantage of that myth. Today’s experience was a success and a happy one to say the least.

We remind pet owners to be aware of the potential risks to their dogs or cats if they ingest ma*****na. THC is the component of ma*****na that can cause illness in pets, particularly dogs. Please keep all cannabis plants, as well as products and foods containing ma*****na, in secure locations such as pet-proof containers and in locked cabinets.

What should I do if my pet ingests ma*****na?
Seek veterinary care promptly. While it's rare for pets to ingest enough ma*****na to be fatal, it can happen. Inform your veterinarian what the pet has ingested, as proper treatment can be administered only if the veterinarian is aware of the toxin. Treatment for cannabis toxicity can include decontamination of the GI tract, IV fluids, and anti-vomiting medication. In severe cases, it may include oxygen support, monitoring blood pressure, regulating the pet's temperature, and ventilator/respiratory support.

How can my pet be poisoned by ma*****na?
* Inhalation of the smoke
* Ingestion of the cannabis plant
* Ingestion of products containing ma*****na or hashish
* Ingestion of foods containing ma*****na, such as edibles, brownies, cookies, candies, oils, and butter. When foods also contain chocolate, the risk of poisoning is increased. Never leave a plate of ma*****na-laced brownies or packages of ma*****na edibles out where your dog can reach them.

What are the symptoms of ma*****na poisoning?
THC is the component of ma*****na that causes illness. Symptoms are usually seen within 30-60 minutes of inhalation or ingestion and may include:

* Glassy eyes
* Stumbling, lack of coordination
* Disorientation
* Dilated pupils
* Drowsiness or agitation, excitement (dogs)
* Urinary incontinence, dribbling (dogs)
* Vomiting
* Tremors and seizures
* Coma

Case spotlight:

Today we preformed a dental prophylaxis (cleaning) with radiographs on a kitty from OOntario Feral Cat Project She was having excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, and difficulty eating. Upon sedation we noticed inflammation and X-rays revealed deterioration of the tooth root known as Feline Resorptive lesions. This is similar to a cavity but occurs in cats for unknown reasons.

Below is an X-ray of normal teeth and roots and also an abnormal X-ray where the root appears to have a moth eaten appearance around the roots of her back tooth.

Also pictured is the teeth before a cleaning and after of her other side of her mouth. We did have to remove the damaged tooth.

Just a reminder, we require at least 24 hours notice on medication refills. We are a single Dr. practice, and are dealing with a major increase in pets seen every day. Our staff can only do so many things at once. Also, please remember to be KIND to all staff. We are trying our best to see as many pets as possible. A little patience and kindness goes a long way!
