Here is this week's edition of the Q-Racing Blog by Ty Wyant:

The folks in Louisiana love their horse racing. It’s in their blood. It ranges from the days of unofficial races to today’s Grade 1 stakes. They have long had a close connection to their racehorses.

Mr Jess Perry was an example of a Louisiana-bred who was an overachiever on the track and then became an influential sire at the elite level.

Bred by Louisiana horseman Jesse Perry, himself the dad of the legendary AQHA and LQHBA Hall of Fame member Leverne Perry, the horse Mr Jess Perry was a sensation as a 2-year-old. In his native Louisiana, he won the $68,000 LQHBA Laddie Futurity (RG3) by 1 1/2 lengths as the 11-10 favorite; he then won $167,782 LQHBA Futurity (RG1) by 1 length while setting a new Delta Downs track record at 400 yards. The c**t then traveled to Sam Houston Race Park to take the $961,418 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) and he returned to Louisiana to conclude his juvenile season with a win in the $50,000 Champions Day Juvenile Stakes (RG2) as the 7-10 favorite.

Mr Jess Perry was honored as the 1994 champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old c**t.

To reinforce his racetrack ability, he came back as a 3-year-old and won the $335,867 Texas Classic Derby (G1).

The late Dr. Glenn Blodgett, the horse division manager at the famed Four Sixes Ranch at Guthrie, Texas, heard about Mr Jess Perry when he was a 2-year-old and went to see him. Dr. Blodgett was impressed, brokered a deal to purchase the stallion, and Mr Jess Perry spent the rest of his illustrious breeding career at the famous ranch.

A son of Streakin La Jolla, Mr Jess Perry is the fourth all-time leading sire of money earners, with his progeny earning $62 million. His son Apollitical Jess is ahead of Mr Jess Perry on that list in third place with his offspring earning $66 million. Another son, One Famous Eagle, is ninth on the all-time leading sires of money earners at $38 million. Mr Jess Perry is also the second all-time broodmare sire with his daughters producing the earners of more than $120 million.

Mr Jess Perry is the sire of five millionaires. They are world champion Apollitical Jess ($1,399,831), champion 3-year-old filly Matabari ($1,410,471), champion 3-year-old c**t One Famous Eagle ($1,387,453), two-time champion Noconi ($1,356,459) and All American Futurity winner Mr Piloto ($1,002,240).

The pedigree of Mr Jess Perry provides an excellent outcross for mares with Dash For Cash in their pedigrees, led by his son First Down Dash. Dash For Cash is not in Mr Jess Perry’s pedigree.

The dam of Mr Jess Perry is Scoopie Fein, a daughter of Sinn Fein, who also produced the stakes-placed Scoopie Dash, the stakes-placed Scoopie Cash and the stakes-placed Sinn N Saint.

The second dam of Mr Jess Perry, Legs La Scoop, was a daughter of Scooper Chick who was second in the Midway Downs Winter Futurity. She produced five minor stakes-placed runners.

A member of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, Mr Jess Perry represents Louisiana, the Four Sixes Ranch and all of Quarter Horse racing. His indelible legacy has marked generations.

05/17/2024

A major cause of placentitis is due to bacterial or fungal infection that enters via the va**na and breaches the cervical barrier, a process known as ascending placentitis. Aspiration of air and faeces into the va**na can occur in mares with poor conformation or injury to the cervix or vulvar opening . In some mares the vulvar opening is not vertical and in opposition. This can occur in any age but is most commonly seen in older or underweight mares where the a**s becomes sunken, pulling the top of the vulvar into a horizontal position. Injury to the cervix and va**na from previous foalings may allow pe*******on of infection past these structures. Another proposed mechanism for infection breaching the cervical barrier involves the presence of abnormal bacteria in the reproductive tract. Production of enzymes by these bacteria is thought to degrade the mucus lining the va**na and cervix allowing bacteria access to the placenta.

Infection normally concentrates at the cervical star although can spread throughout the placenta. The migration of bacteria leads to inflammation of the placenta, stimulating the tissue to produce prostaglandin, a hormone that may cause the uterus to contract, leading to premature labour.
As more placenta becomes inflamed and thickened it begins to pull away from the uterine lining. This leads to a decrease in oxygen and nutrients to the foal, thereby retarding its growth or leading to its death. Infection can also extend across the placenta to the foal resulting in abortion or, if the infection is of low intensity, the birth of a weak, infected foal.
Separation of the placenta from the uterus also has implications for birth. In normal pregnancy, the placenta remains attached to the uterus allowing the foal to rupture the membranes at the cervical star. If the placenta separates prematurely at the area adjacent to the cervix, the membranes may not rupture but will be delivered intact around the foal, a ‘red-bag’ delivery. This premature placental separation, if unattended, will result in a stillbirth due to suffocation of the foal.
