Hip Dislocation in Dogs:

My 17 year old Mickey recently had his hip dislocated due to a fall on the steps of the RV motorhome during my camping trip. Fortunately I was able to perform a closed reduction.

Causes of dislocation:

1. Trauma, such as being hit by a car.
2. Hip dysplasia
3. Degenerative joint disease
4. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head

Treatment:

1. Closed reduction - A non invasive procedure performed with anesthesia to relax local muscles and put back the bones without surgically opening the joint. A sling is placed and kept in place for next 2-3 weeks to stabilize the hip joint is a must for a successful outcome.
2. Surgical procedure. There are many techniques of surgical treatment that might be employed in keeping the bones where they are supposed to be. Another surgical procedure for smaller dogs (50 lbs or less), or for cats is known as femoral head osteotomy. With this procedure the femoral head is cut off and removed, allowing the joint to heal as a “false joint”.

When you see an acute onset of lameness don’t despair. Seek immediate professional help.

Be kind to pet’s on Fourth of July.

If you have pets in your neighborhood, please limit your fire works on fourth of July.

Pets are very sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights and strong smells. On Fourth of July and the days around it when people are likely to set off fireworks, it's best to leave your pets safely indoors, preferably with a radio or TV turned on to hide jarring noises. Please don’t leave your pet unattended at home, keep them leashed and under your direct control at all times.

I am always interested in returning all favors I receive. Today a pet friendly waitress allowed me to dine in with my pet Mickey at a restaurant in Waukesha Wisconsin. After seating us this waitress was curious as to what was the secret for my 17 year old dog’s young looks and good health. I replied that Mickey’s father is a Veterinarian.

After thanking her for her help I asked her whether she is a pet owner and if she has any health questions about her own pets. She replied that one of her pets is suffering from coprophagia. I was happy to provide her with free medical advice that she should use “Forbid” to treat her pet’s condition.

I was elated to have a chance to return this lady’s favor.

Do you have a Yorkshire Terrier or a Schnauzer?

Both these breeds of pets have a high prevalence of hyperlipidemia (gross lipemia in serum/blood). Hyperlipidemia may predispose them to life threatening diseases - Pancreatitis, Seizures, Cholelithiasis and Peripheral neuropathies. Hyperlipidemia incidence also increases with age.
It is prudent to be proactive by doing the following:

1. Routine testing of fasting serum Triglyceride concentration
2. Feeding low fat diets (example Royal Canin GI low fat diet)

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis in pets is a potentially life threatening disease.

The pancreas is responsible for releasing enzymes that aid in digestion. With pancreatitis, the enzymes activate when they’re released, inflaming and causing damage to the pancreas and its surrounding tissue and other organs. The enzymes can actually begin to digest the pancreas itself, which causes extreme pain.

Symptoms of pancreatitis:

Hunched back
Repeated vomiting
Pain or distention of the abdomen (dog appears uncomfortable or bloated)
Diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Dehydration
Weakness/lethargy
Fever
Causes of pancreatitis:

A high-fat diet
Dietary indiscretion
Obesity
Hypothyroidism (or other endocrine diseases)
Severe blunt trauma
Diabetes
Toxins
Genetic predisposition
Once your pets develop pancreatitis the chances of relapse is very high. pancreatitis is like that relative that just won’t leave. Unfortunately my own pet Minnie, a Yorkshire Terrier developed pancreatitis when she was just 2 years old and had a chronic life long pancreatitis, with advanced Veterinary medical care she lived a long life and she passed away at the age of 15 years.

Because pancreatitis is dangerous, a suspected case of pancreatitis needs medical treatment as quickly as possible.

Allergies:

Did you know ?

We can send a man to the moon but can not cure allergies!

Any one who suffers from allergies can emphasize with our pet patients who also suffer from the same allergies.

Allergy is a disease in which the immune system reacts abnormally to everyday substances such as pollens, animal danders, mold spores, mites, and certain foods. All of these allergic reactions are unpleasant, some are serious and few can be fatal.

Signs of pet allergies:
•Scratching, biting, and chewing at the skin
•Excessive face rubbing
•Excessive grooming
•Hair loss
•Recurrent ear infections

Most allergy patients are also presented with concurrent painful ear infections, bacterial and yeast infections. It is important to treat concurrent infections in addition to allergies to achieve successful control of allergies.

Unlike people pets cannot tell you when they have a toothache or which of their teeth is causing pain and discomfort.

Dental X-rays is a must for all pet dental procedures to detect and resolve painful dental disease.

Attached please find a picture of teeth that shows no visible dental disease. With dental X-rays the same teeth reveals the hidden advanced periodontal disease and loss of tooth support (alveolar bone loss) that requires extraction of all teeth.
