Did you know that approximately 60% of performance/show horses are afflicted with gastric ulcers, with non-performance horses and foals being impacted as well?

Ulcers can develop for many reasons related to diet, housing, training, and more. Some equine management factors that can contribute to ulcers include:

ā€¢Stall confinement
ā€¢Strenuous exercise
ā€¢Limiting feedings to two times per day
ā€¢Feeding diets high in grains
ā€¢Stress (both environmental and physical)
ā€¢No direct contact to other horses
ā€¢Training and recreational showing
ā€¢Hauling and mixing groups of horses

ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹To help raise awareness about gastric ulcers in horses, we are providing gastroscopy of the stomach at 50% off AND 2 FREE tubes of Ulcergard with each scoping!šŸŽ‰ (*while supplies last)

āļøUlcergard is not only an effective Treatment for ulcers but can also be used as a Preventative when your horse is under added stress while traveling, changing barns/environments, etc

If you have concerns about ulcers and your horse, call or email today to book your horseā€™s appointment as sign ups for this program ends April 30th!

12/06/2023

Dental care is an important part of your horse's routine annual healthcare needs. One very common dental issue we see on nearly every dental patient is sharp points. These sharp points develop (see first photo) as your horse chews because the outside of the upper teeth and the inside of the lower teeth do not overlap so they donā€™t naturally wear down.
If our horses have sharp points it can make chewing uncomfortable (think of biting your cheek every time you chew - ouch!) and those points can make wearing a halter or working in the bridle uncomfortable as the halter and bridle press the cheek against those sharp points. As the sharp points grow they can begin to cause ulceration of the cheek and the tongue. (see second photo)

This seemingly small issue can translate into health and behavioral problems. Annual dental care can help you keep sharp points in check before they become a problem!

To help make regular dental care more affordable, our half-price December Dental program provides your horseā€™s oral exam and power float at 50% off when there are 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to our sister clinic, Loomis Basin Equine in Penryn.

These appointments are already filling up very quickly and booking out into 2024, so call or email today for your appointment time!

Itā€™s the one youā€™ve been waiting for...
For 15 years our equine medical group has been providing our half-price December Dental Program to help make it easier for horse owners to afford to maintain their horses' dental health!

Just like us, horses of all ages need regular dental care to keep them feeling their best. Younger horses need to be checked to make sure their teeth are coming in correctly, adult horses need to have regular floats to keep sharp points and other oral issues at bay, and aged horses often need help as their teeth begin to lose function or become loose.

This program provides your horseā€™s oral exam and power float at 50% off when you have 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to Loomis Basin in Penryn.
These appointments fill up very quickly so call or email today for your appointment time!

When the weather changes rapidly it can cause a multitude of health concerns with our horses. We want to address just a couple things that we are seeing more often right now due to the rapid changes in weather:

ā€¢ Colic - Horses often donā€™t adjust as quickly to rapid changes in temperature as they need to. If the temperature suddenly plummets they sometimes are less apt to drink as much water as their body requires, which can lead to impactions and dehydration. Offering your horse a soupy mash, warmed water, and/or adding a little extra salt in their feed can often help keep colic at bay!

ā€¢Hoof Abscesses - When the weather switches from wet to dry, wet to dry, wet to dry our horses hooves are more prone to hoof abscesses. Dry hooves soak up dirty water, manure, and urine all contaminated with lots of bacteria. Any openings in the hoof (no matter how tiny) from a crack or bruise or a little puncture from stepping on a rock can allow that nasty bacteria to come in and create a hoof abscess. Cleaning your horseā€™s hooves regularly and providing a clean dry area for them can greatly decrease the chances of developing hoof abscesses.

If you have any concerns about your horseā€™s health during these changes in weather we are here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! 916-652-7645 or [email protected]

**IMPORTANT INFORMATION**

Equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been detected in multiple horses in several counties in California. To reduce disease spread, the California State Veterinarian recommends that all hunter/jumper events (the most affected group) be postponed for the next 28 days, all equine events be postponed for the next 14 days, and all non-essential horse movements postponed for at least 14 days.

Additional information about the EHM incidents and related EHV-1 cases in California, including a map of affected counties, can be found here:

https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/AHFSS/Animal_Health/equine_herpes_virus.html

Additional information:
Equineherpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been detected in multiple horses in several counties in California. If not controlled, it can have significant consequences to the horse industry, infecting thousands of horses due to the extensive mixing of horses at statewide, national, and international horse events.
Equine herpesvirus causes respiratory disease, abortion, neonatal death, and the neurological disease known as EHM. It spreads in aerosolized secretions, by direct contact, and by contact with surfaces containing infected secretions. Shedding of the virus generally occurs for 7-10 days.
To reduce disease spread, the California State Veterinarian recommends that all hunter/jumper events (the most affected group) be postponed for the next 28 days, all equine events be postponed for the next 14 days, and all non-essential horse movements postponed for at least 14 days.
Horse owners must immediately isolate any horses exhibiting neurologic signs and consult their veterinarian; EHM has mandatory State reporting requirements. Owners must practice good biosecurity when they move horses in emergency situations or for veterinary care; avoid other horses and donā€™t share tack/equipment that hasnā€™t been properly cleaned and disinfected, including farrier and veterinary equipment.
For more information visit https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/animal_health/ equine_herpes_virus.html.
This recommendation considers an event when horses from different home premises are brought together at a single location and include, but are not limited to: competitions of any discipline (in state or out of state), rodeos, educational riding clinics, and any travel of horses to an outside facility for lessons or casual/social gathering, etc. Sanctioned horse racing tracks are exempt from this recommendation.

If you have any questions or concerns about EHV / EHM we are always here to help you and your horses! You may reach us at 916-652-7645 or email us at [email protected]

Important information for all of our clients who live in the foothills and above but also for those of you who travel to higher elevations with your horses as well!

Are you familiar with Tick Fever?
Despite the fact that it is usually seen more in spring and early summer, we are seeing cases of this disease in areas covered by several of our offices. Typically tick fever is found primarily in areas at higher elevations; However, many of us travel to ride our horses in areas outside where they are usually housed. With this in mind, even if your horse lives in the valley they may still be at risk along with horses housed at higher elevations. In this article and video Dr. Liz Howard explains the what Tick Fever is, what signs/symptoms of it are, how it is treated, and info on prevention.

If you have questions or concerns about tick fever and your horse, we would be happy to helpā€¦ you can reach us at 916-652-7645 or [email protected]

As we are starting this new year, we have lots of exciting news to share!

First, as we continue to focus on best serving you and your beloved horses, as we have for decades, we are excited to announce that another doctor has joined the Sierra Equine team!
Dr. Kaitlyn Coyes worked out of the Penryn office of Loomis Basin Equine since joining our equine medical group 5 years ago. She grew up in the Central Valley where she spent much of her extra time helping her uncle gather and work his beef cattle. Her love of horses and riding continues as she recently acquired a beautiful roan filly, Rosie, that she is incredibly excited to be working with and training. She has plans to get her into the reining show pen and possibly some ranch versatility classes.
Read more about Dr. Kaitlyn Coyesā€™ education, areas of interest, etc: https://sierraequine.com/doctors/kaitlyn-coyes
We look forward to sharing more exciting news soon including: added benefits to our EQ Protect program, a new and improved Sierra Equine facility and we will have another doctor joining this area as we move into the busy season this summer!
